NPG is good to my ears, I appreciate the Graffiti Bridge soundtrack.

I have read a lot of flack some fam out there in regards to this album, and I can appreciate the debate and alternative views about it - to each is own.

But for me, I do think it's an underrated album and the New Power Generation song as well.

It totally has that early 90's sound, so if you aren't into that then yeah it's not the groove for you.

But I am in!

I love the music in the video verson of the song.

I'm just old enough that when I hear the term "you people", I think of H. Ross Perot running for POTUS in the 90s, and he referred to a group of black people that way. haha I remember late night hosts making National Association for the Advancement of You People jokes a lot.

I can't believe this wasn't really performed live. I've only heard that rehearsal with the band performing it without Prince. I figured, at the time, that this would have been a reoccurring staple on his tours throughout his career.

I like “New Power Generation” even though, at the time, I realized that Prince was creating a straw man/stick figure argument. "Your old fashion music, your old ideas--we're sick and tired of you telling us what to do." Nobody had told Prince what to do in ten years. And, by 1989/90, he was considered "the old dude" with "the old ideas." Still, I like it because, emotively, the song continued to resonate Prince's ongoing theme of doing what he wanted to do regardless of what radio or sales attempted to dictate. Yet, ironically, doing what he wanted to do included co-opting the very thing, rap music/hip hop culture, that was removing him from being the hip thing. Regardless of all that, “New Power Generation” is, for my money, still a funky little jam with much attitude even if, again, I'm not quite sure at whom his attitude or ire is aimed. To be honest, I don't care at whom it's aimed. When I hear the song, I just hold up my middle finger and sing along like I’m taking part in a real revolution. Viva la…whatever the hell it is for what we’re supposed to be fighting. I don’t really care as long as the music is funky.
