Prince wouldn't have listened to anyone telling him to stop doing splits back in the day it was one of his trademarks.

probably not, do any of us listen to good advice? ad on to that that we don't really know how things are going to turn out. In boxing, last night, I was watching an interview of Light Heavyweight great, Bob Foster, he was as clear headed as any 70 something year old, inspite of being kayoed by most of the top Heavyweights of his era (ali, frazier, ernie terrel, zora folley) then you have ali who had some wars and was stopped inside the distance once and he couldn't even speak for the last few years. You never really know how things are going to turn out. People put themselves in denial often times when it's really obvious though.

Interesting to note that Sheila E. and the other women performed the BET tribute barefoot and the name of the production company on her tribute song is "Stiletto Flats..."

Sheila had trouble with her legs also, from standing on her feet all the time performing on the drums. I saw it on UnSung, when they told her story.

Sometimes you gotta die for what u believe in man. I've been thinking about this a lot lately too. His hips were definitely fucked based on what I've seen. But oh well man, life goes on. Watching him do the splits is fucking AWESOME.

what makes you say that "on what i've seen?' i haven't seen any footage of him looking frail or in pain. even in that judith hill bio, he runs and it doesn't look like he's in pain.

I don't know that he did. He's alluded to falling over improperly placed speakers before and we do know that he busted his ankle during the 90s and was warned to stop dancing. Still, i can't see the uberman that prince was not being able to deal with some pain. just cant see it. Johnny unitas has been a cripple since he retired and he's still around I think, I couldn't see anything prince went through as being any worse. None of it makes sense to me. As a martial artist I have a million aches and pains but it rarely interferes with my work, I couldn't see prince not handling it. but then, we don't know how severe the pain was. all I know is that prince was a very strong person.

prince had to be familiar with the nicholas brothers who were doing splits as late as the jackson five era, in their fifties. they jumped like that. funny, the older people seemed tougher. cab calloway danced to his last days.

Well, that explains why women have a longer life expectancy.

I'm no physio, but don't men and women have different shaped hips?

we don't know yet. He stopped doing the splits years ago and was told to stop dancing, if word on here was true, when he busted his ankle in the 90's. Interestingly, the man worked so damned hard, probably woulda killed any of us. He mentioned in two seperate interviews in the 80's that people were worried that he was going to work himself to death. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if that had something to do with it.

-- I have thought that despite the pain pills he was working himself death anyway. Putting 100 hour weeks at his age and not sleeping. How long was he going to make it. I believe he got not be pills to keep working and had to know what it was going to lead to.

-/ So Prince was not tough because he had joint damage. Get a fucking grip. He was in pain getting wacked on pills but still working 100 hour weeks and that is not tough enough for you.

I would suspect that had a lot to do with it. In some ways, that's ok to me. As a musician, sometimes I would be just fine with dying playing music, doing what I love. For guys like us, we can't really stop anyway.

The hips may well have been worn out, yes - but the moves that concern ME are the ones shown in the 'Little Red Corvette' video - when he bounces down onto his knees, with his lower legs splayed out. Your knees are NOT designed to do that, unless you have some element of hypermobility - which, in turn, can be part of syndromes like Ehlers-Danlos (which in some cases, incidentally, can lead to digestive problems like those suggested by P's chef).

>

Anyway, I'd wager that if he had hypermobility, that might explain why there were scars on one hip / lower leg as opposed to evidence of full hip / knee replacements...Maybe they were investigating his issues - but there is little to be done for hypermobility - and it can and does lead to later issues like arthritis / pain.

>

Just my thoughts - based on the fact that his energetic 'knee-crashing' makes me wince a lot more than his doing the splits!
