The Revolution and the original line up of the NPG should perform seperately with Justin Timberlake as the lead singer and the other band getting the lead singer from the Weeknd.

This would be a professional triibute. Grammy time anyone?

For people who argue that the tribute should include more "bankable" artists, how does that fit with the fact that Prince was scornful of Top 40 radio, as well as most hit music?

I think he would have preferred musicians he respected to the most "popular" ones.

He would have preferred his albums to be sold by a more bankable tribute. that's why for the last 25 years he made mostly rnb for young listeners...

That idea was done for Prince's lifetime award at the BET awards and that was amateurish.

you really cannot judge an artists fanbase by the amount of records sold, not these days.. especially with someone who isnt part of the mega star establishment. And its only going to get worse now that the riaa is counting streams towards album sales smh....

anyway, ive seen janelle twice now, ALWAYS huge crowds. she does very well. especially with the 35 and under crowd.

They all payed tribute to Prince already on youtube. Young people won't feel the need to get an interest in prince with seeing D or Janelle Monae. Frankly...Prince needed the biggest black acts of nowadays.

Watching # buying a Prince album, so what's the point?

you cannot be serious lol. like really. anyone who sees that tribute, ANYONE, and hears something they like will go online and search it out to listen. now prince has made this very hard to do considering that hiis musicc is only on tidal but youtube has changed a lot over the last month so folks that want to listen will and yes for some that will translate into sales for others it wont. either way its more than what was happening 3 months ago.

For sure. This guy has some great videos. (Not sure how this would translate live OR how he performs live.) If he is good live, this could be awesome, in a number of different arrangements.

BET should also be trying to get the Synchopated Ladies to perform a number as well as that FAMU saxophonist.

You're the one that must be joking...

Beyonce sells in a day what Monae sells in an entire year...Timberlake, Jay Z, these "artists" are way more popular than D or Monae, and are better driver for increasing fans and sales for Prince.

I'm hoping that The Revolution will reunite for this. Perhaps they could play could play along with a vocal track of PRN singing Purple Rain. NO hologram but perhaps a video playing on a big screen as they play along. I'm just hoping BET gets this right.

That is just what I'm thinking. Play songs live with original band members to Prince's actual singing. OR, play live songs with original band members along with a saxophone or tumpet or trombone taking the place of Prince vocals; an instrument that can truly convey the highs and lows of his singing, instead of having people trying to sing his lead vocals. There are some amazing horn players who can do the job.

Lurker and first time poster here....Dont forget about Lenny Kravitz. Lenny needs to be part of the tribute! BET Puhleez make this happen.

. Yes Lenny Kravitz would be good, even just to play guitar. Miguel can bring the old dirty mind era, or Frank Ocean on a ballad or mid tempo joint. Finally Andre 3000 can do some paisley psychedelic stuff (and dress the part). . As a tribute, this may not happen, but would like to see Nasty Girl done, maybe with Beyoncé (she did have that Naughty Girl/Nasty Girl remix), maybe Tinashe, maybe Nikki Minaj. All bankable BET stars to keep the young folk from fast forwarding or taking a snack break (like me during the country performances at award shows). No one can deny that sex was a part of his legacy, why deny it for his tribute? . What songs? Has to be relevant to the audience. On a BET interview with Prince they called Adore the black national anthem, or something like that. Who would have the balls to cover that? D'Angelo would be my bet. What else? I Wanna Be Your Lover feels right. Take Me With U. U Got the Look. Most Beautiful Girl in the World. 1999.

Imagine how much of a showstopper it would be for them to surprise us with Destiny's Child singing Nasty Girl?

OR Beyonce doing Darling Nikki, with Nikki Minaj spitting a couple of verses during the song. I do believe that would bring the house down - if they really take it seriously (and don't just throw it together.)

OR Beyonce singing some mashup of Nasty Girl and Naughty Girl. Could be pretty nice if well thought out.

I have concerns about this tribute mostly because the shade they threw at Billboard and Madonna sets the bar so high. I know it's the BET awards but I hope it's not only black artists included. I was outside Paisley Park several times that week after he died. It wasn't just black people mourning his death.

Can't stand Questlove's attention seeking ways (especially when he wrote disrespectful things about Prince when he was alive and his family after Prince passed away on social media), at least he will be getting attention as a musician and can HAM it up as many times as he can when the camera is on him. The lineup for the BET Awards tribute to Prince is of high caliber and well thought out. It's great seeing Sheila E and Janelle listed as performers because they truly had a long standing relationship free of oneupmanship and genuine love for Prince.

How close really were Prince and Questlove? I don't like some of these celebrities trying to come off as authorities on all things Prince. I'd say the same thing with Touré. Just stop.

Are you purposefully trying to wind people up? A tribute should have absolutely f*ck all to do with trying to increase sales of anything. The people paying tribute, or the artist they are paying tribute to. It's about respecting the legacy and showing people why they cared about the art, and how they have some connection to it. Prince himself would be pretty pissed if he saw a tribute as a cash making opportunity ffs. Why is it always about money? Too sad.

yeahthat I have seen Janelle live many times and she has big enthusiastic crowds, with many young people. And, unlike some artists who sell more records, she doesn't rely on auto-tune.

If you are judging an artist's worth soley by their album sales, then you would have to say Prince wasn't "worth" much either, in the last 20 years. That's certainly NOT the way I judge how good an artist is!

I don't judge an artist by his sales...What you're saying is ridiculous. I just stated that these artists are far less embraced by the young generation than Beyonce and co. And the point here is to get Prince new fans. I see no interest in seeing other artist doing cover of prince.

Hell, even Springsteen's cover of Purple rain was boring !

This tribute could save a whole generation that are listening pure shit, but doesn't know it yet. Until they saw Beyonce performing Nasty girl half naked, they won't get interested in Prince.

I always got the impression that Prince tolerated Questlove and treated him like like a kid that wanted to participate in grown folks conversation but was given a coloring book to occupy him while grown folks had a good time. Not very close, because Questlove wrote a Instagram post on the night that Dangelo played First Avenue complaining Prince didn't come to the show to see "2 of his best students" and that only Him and Dangelo cared about his legacy not knowing that Prince was hosting a release party at Paisley Park Studios for Hit And Run Phase 1 for fans and media. Questlove came across as entitled and pouted like Prince was his father that didn't come to his recital. Prince made his mark as a musician long before Dangelo and Questlove got in the music business and while Prince was trying new ideas and collaborating with different musicians and associates, those two still obsess over one period of Prince's life that he himself clearly moved on from.

Shut your negative ass up. I get so sick of the negative shit that comes out of you people's mouth Just shut up with the negativity and attacking people that loved Prince and he loved and played with just because you don't like them Like Madonna said Deal with it!

Go give Questlove and Madonna a shoulder to cry on you big baby. Prince dealt with fair and unfair criticism about his music, career choices and personal habits by many on this board that was far worst than what I said about Questlove and Madonna. Those 2 make any and everything about Pirnce more about themselves and I will keep calling out Questlove as long as it applies.

The Roots are masters of hip hop and neo soul grooves. I just don't find them that compelling when playing funk and pop especially Prince's music. Listen to their version of Purple Rain. Uninspired guitar solo, flat bass, and Questlove is all off on the drums. Prince's music had so much to do with feeling and he reallly worked his bands to get that feeling right. It's weird how you can play the right notes and still be so wrong. Thats why I think musicians from Prince bands should heavily involved.
