I hate the pharma industry, I hate doctors that push these prescriptions. I'm sad all over again. I keep telling folks leave these damn pills alone. Nothing good can come of legal heroin.

Agreed. They cut off pain receptors. Who wouldn't want to feel (or not feel, as it were) that way?!?

He was around people ALL of the time, if he was in any serious pain, I am sure these people, many many many many people, would have known.

He took pain meds, thats why no one "saw the pain". And he wasn't around people "all the time". He lived in his estate, privately, we all know that, or rather, thats why we know nothing. And most of the time he was around "many many many" people was his performances, for which he needed to take the meds.

I need an explaination WHY he was taking the pills.

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Somehow I was kind of hoping it was something else. the flu wore him down.. or something. But of course its the most obvious thing. and for me the OD isnt an issue (though im really hoping that it doesnt come out that he diid have some kinf of recreational issue), the issue is now how it looks. this is the kind of thing that fucks up legacies, and he doesnt deserve that. i truly truly hope that if this does turn out to be a od triggered by a dependence brought on by a medical issue that the media and public respect that reality without trying to turn it into something else.

This is really nothing new, is it? I think we knew as much, it is only a matter of how, why, what etc etc. Still making him out to be a junkie, and I am certain he wasn't. Hopefully they will be forthcoming with some more information to clear his name. This is just heartbreaking. sad

Unfortunately the word "overdose" brings about negative images of someone in a back alley shooting up....and the media will run with that image. An overdose can simply be taking 10mg instead of 5mg, depending on the drug. P's small frame and the fact that he didn't eat or rest much probably made it easier for him to "overdose". cry

One thing that has come out of this is that it looks like he acknowledged he had a problem with drugs and was is the process of receiving help, and by all indications from the "elevator" story it may have been just ONE day too late, that part is the most tragic.

An overdose doesn't negate the possibility of any other medical condition.

This is best case scenario folks, it really is. Unless you wanted a result where this death was unavoidable (like cancer), which I can understand too. But no street drugs, and given the source that gave us this news on day one gave us a narrative with it (hip pain, painkillers from around 2010), this is tragic for our beloved Prince but not even a tiny dent on his reputation. If anything, people will wonder how he functioned so well and so often throughout all of this downturn in his fortunes. And the only answer they'll come up with is - because he was Prince.

I have to agree. The fact he was able to function is ASTOUNDING. And while the last two weeks were worrying and... if I'm honest I have to admit to feeling sick that something bad was appening just because of the public nature of the plane landing - my heart went full-on this is an emergency and I couldnt shake that feeling.

Prince was the best of our generation, and the best ever....we were lucky to have had him, and I am glad he knows no more pain, no more expectations and the endless love of God while he sits and holds his son in a warm embrace. Rest in peace sweet Prince.

speakeasy

This is a national epidemic that affects rich and poor in all communities in the US.

Here are some sobering statisitics I found on a page (linked below) They are 6 years old, so you know it's worse now -->

Between the years 1999 and 2010, sales for prescription painkillers to hospitals, doctors and pharmacies increased fourfold.
By 2010, the number of pain medications prescribed was enough to keep every single American medicated for one month’s time.

Since 1999, the number of overdose deaths from pain medications has increased by 300 percent.
In 2008, opiate addiction statistics deaths resulting from prescription pain meds totaled 14,800. This number amounts to over and above the combined total for heroin and cocaine-related deaths.

In 2009, the abuse of prescription painkiller drugs accounted for more than 475,000 emergency room visits.
This number represents a twofold increase in drug-related emergency room visits since 2005.

As of 2010, opiate addiction statistics show over 12 million Americans reported using prescription pain medications for non-medical purposes
without having obtained an actual prescription.

In 2010, an estimated two million people reported abusing prescription pain medication for the first time within the previous 12 month period.
This number amounts to 5,500 people a day abusing prescription pain meds for the first time.

Am I the only one here to recognize this is not an official report? A law enforcement official who is not supposed to talk to the media, talks to the media. This is the same old same old we've been getting for several weeks. I don't trust the source and will hold judgment until the official report comes out.

Prince is to blame for his death: not "big pharm," and not doctors who are pushermen/women. And
"telling folks leave these damn pills alone" is too simplistic. We have discovered that the "just say
no" policy was a crock of shit and does not do much in helping addicts treat their illness/addiction. I
think Prince bought into the "Prince mystique" and therefore took advantage of MVP treatment from
doctors and enablers in his camp.

And to be more specific, addiction is to blame for his death as well. But all directions from his death
lead to Prince's actions and decisions.

Prince is not stupid, an overdose does not mean he was in a LOT of pain, there could have been interactions with something else, etc. Do you guys honestly think Prince would just keep poppin these like they were skittles if he was in pain? Absolutely he would not.
