Of course, but musically on earth, no one for me personally. He was my main entertainer, and I still feel so sad that he's no longer here. No one could ever replace Prince. He was singular in his combination of musicianship, vision, ambition, songwriting, and live performance. Prince built a whole world in which his music existed. And everytime we listened or went to his show, we would taken to that world. Prince even surpassed his idols like James Brown, Sly Stone, and George Clinton. They all worked beautifully in their niche, but Prince constantly worked to expand his universe. I could never see James doing a song like Condition of the Heart. Prince had an unreal amount of devotion and passion for his art. The sheer amount of hours committed to learning his craft and creating his art just seems unpararelled by any artist. I just don't know if there is anyone who would sacrifice so much for their work. Honestly, I don't think it's even healthy. Aretha Franklin said, "I love music, but not as much as Prince. he was one of those artists that loved to go into and stay in the studio. He was music to the max." Now as far as new artists, Jacob Collier is the only musician right now who has the tools to be within or near the same ballpark. He plays piano, guitar, bass and, drums. And is now writing, composing, producing and playing all the music on his debut album. He is only 21 and has a alot of potential. Even in interviews, he seems very determined to do things his way. He's not a showman, but who knows.

Of course NO ONE can take Prince's place...but of current artists I get a little of Prince's vibe, talent, and mystique from Miguel. His "Wildheart" album last year was great. "Flesh", "Leaves", "Simplethings", "Face The Sun"...a lot of great songs from an artist who writes and plays guitar and dances and mixes the sacred and profane. He's only 3 albums in and showing a lot of potential; I will enjoy following his career. |
