Now I've been a fan since For You. My fav album. But I fell during Rave. He was in a zone of peace and happiness that I connected with. "I don't make the rules. I just play"

Long story short, I was 13 in 2003 and for whatever reason I asked my Dad if I could listen to his Purple Rain record. I can't remember what caused me to want listen in the first place because I'd seen the movie a hundred times (shoutout to my family for always having great taste in music), but never really paid attention. I was hooked from that day on. I sat there with my Dad's headphones on, glued to his old record player every day when I came home from school. Makes me smile whenever I think about it. My theory is that I've always been a P fan, but it took sometime before it kicked in, whatever "it" was. It was as if he came to me and was like "It's time Leslie, you're ready now" The rest is history. From now on, 4 U I shall be wild 💜

I was head over heals the first time I saw Under the Cherry Moon I thought he was so funny and divine. When he makes the funny voices and talks while Mary Sharon is talking to her boyfriend. "I bet he's your boyfriend" and spits out the cherry pits. I used to tape him with my cassette deck just so I could listen to his voice when I couldn't watch the movie. I wore that VHS out. I bought it twice. Can we get a emoticon of a cherry and a moon please!! Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

I remember hearing members of my family talk about him when I was young, my uncle in particular couldn't get over the scene in Purple Rain when the kid is lurkin behind Apollonia in those "bug-eyed" shades. They wouldn't stop ripping on his "weirdness." It peaked my interest, being precocious I recognized early on we were kindred "weirdos." He'd pop up here & there in my mind, during the "symbol" era the family ragging struck again this time about whether Prince would eventually be referred to as just..."The." My weirdo senses were like, "I must defend him!" Someone finally gifted me the hits collection. I couldn't get enough of the Purple Rain movie, either. I was mesmerized by his stage presence the most. So I was in my teens when my love was cemented. When we hit the millennium I remember the remix of 1999 becoming my theme, go figure. & you had to be there when I finally realized how cool my vhs copy of the Batman movie was, ha!
I discovered the org at 18 in the early 2000s, amassed info & hit eBay for all the material & memorabilia I could find. Funny side note, I had parties where I'd annoy all my friends with all things Prince... I managed to convert a few of them too... In 1980 I started buying music and really listening, when I was 10 years old. A friend of mine did the same. We would always listen to the records together and discuss it to death, getting the free top 40 magazine to see who released what and so on. I was somewhat aware of Controversy (it never became a hit, wasn't really played in the Netherlands).
Then my friend bought the 1999 7" (the one with the ugly cover), but it didn't really do too much for me. Then I played the B side, "how come you don't call me". That got me really intrigued. Not only was this "special", as it wasn't on the album, it was also in another style, much more soulful and simply great. Little Red Corvette didn't do much for me (never really liked his "rock" tunes, like Purple Rain or ICNTTPOYM), but when I saw the When Doves Cry single, the styling, the label artwork the b side (17 days) and how it all played out, I was sold and started buying every 7", 12" and album I could find, including associated acts. Each record got me more into him. By the time I had pretty much everything, it led me, through people with extensive record collections, to Sly Stone, P-Funk, James Brown, Graham Central Station and beyond....
The man changed my life. And it all started with a piano and microphone. Bittersweet, but it does bring the story full circle. Paisley Park is in your heart - Love Is Here!

There were lots of moments, first I fell in love with his voice, when I heard Sign O' The Times on the radio, then when I watched the SOTT the movie, then Purple Rain when he sing "The Beautiful Ones" with great passion, and his crazy dance in Baby I'm a Star... And finally, when he was starring at me from backstage just before an aftershow, then walked confidently onstage whilst the drummer kicked off the show, and whilst looking at me again, sat down at the keyboard and played the intro to "Superstition".

Although I loved Soft and Wet hearing it in high school and bought each of his albums as they came out from the very beginning. It was hearing the unbelieveable 1999 album that I fell in love and became a lifelong devotee. It was so deep and head and shoulders above anything else released by anyone else. The era of that amazing album, plus Vanity 6 and the second Time album - WOW. If you've got funk, you've got style.

"Batdance" was my introduction into the dreamy-eyed mystique purple-hued world of Prince's royal badness. I danced in front of the television with fear and excitement in my eyes as he moved all around the screen. Those vocals...those eyes I fell fast, hard and forever.

You and Gilliaj seem to be around my age because between 92-94 was when I was solidifying my music interests as well and I remember one of my first big purchases independent of my family was the symbol album back when CD's were overtaking tapes. And then I got D&P. But I don't think I was a solid Prince fan until 1994. The whole fight with WB intrigued the shit out of me.. and the goth look of Come and the whole idea of Prince being dead was fascinating as hell to my angstful teenage years. And that performance at the AMA's with Mayte and they did I Hate You, 319 and something.. he didn't even play or sing live but it just left me with my jaw dropped. And then I kinda went backwards in his catalogue more and more as I fell out of touch with the post 96 material but then caught up with his new stuff after I saw him for the first time during the One Nite Alone tour in Frankfurt. Ever since then I've been hooked. Change it one more time..

The first time I heard "I Wanna Be Your Lover" on the radio. I was shocked and delighted by the voice, the lyrics, the androgyny, the funk, and the mystery of Prince right then and there. The icing on the cake was that it was playing on Top 40 radio in conservative Baton Rouge! There was hope for the futre of music after all!

Tho i was aware of Prince since i first saw him on AB in 1980 singing I Wanna Be Your Lover and liking 1999, i really got hooked the first time i heard When Doves Cry..The guitar, the unique sound and synths...I was floored and hooked and that song burned my brain all summer long that year, 1984...Ironically, im not much a fan of WDC anymore...For some reason it feels heavily dated to me, moreso than his other music at the time..That song, to me, feels stuck and cemented to that time and year...But Prince himself never felt dated to me... My friends and I all went to see Purple Rain in the movie theatre when it first came out. We got high beforehand so the soundtrack was twice as intense as it would have been if we have been straight. I fell in love with Prince halfway through his performance of 'The Beautiful Ones'. I still get totally sucked in by that performance every time I watch Purple Rain. I am too from the D, hay!, 1979 - prince/prince, I wanna be your lover, 9 years old, had no idea, But I could not take my eyes off of that cover, he's a girl..no..no wait a minute he has hair on his chest...but..but wait a min, those eyes, and then I looked at the back cover and hes on pegasus naked, I fell down the rabbit hole at that point, no one in Detroit in the 1970's was on a pegasus naked! Couldn't get enough after that.
