I saw a pic first then I heard the music The deal was already sealed way before I heard anything I remember the picture too. It was a screenshot from the Black Sweat music video. I just remember thinking "Damn Prince is sexy!" Forever In My Life, forever in my heart. I love you Prince Rogers Nelson

The first time I saw the 1999 video on MTV. I was 9. So it wasn't a lusty love thing. But I was damn intruigued. I knew this guy was cool.

I have to say I am loving all these stories of people discovering Prince in the late 90's and 2000s. As a fan since the esrly 80s, it never occurred to me that peple would still be discovering Prince - I just love that! .

Purple Rain ... didn't see it in '84 in theatres (I would have been 4 years old) but maybe '88 when they showed it on TV. Thankgod my parents had the good common sense to record it. Even if some of the scenes with Appolonia were a bit to graphic, I still remember how much I loved the energy from the concert scenes.
Fast forward to '91, Gett off, Diamonds & Pearls, Cream all big hits, and and the next year me buying the Love Symbol album at the age of 12.
It was the O(-> album that sealed the deal. Still love every song on that album. Unconditional fan since.

Summer of 1984. Mum was picking me up from school - I was sitting in the car and she was talking to a friend and "When Doves Cry" came on the radio. The opening guitar riff and drums were the most incredible thing I'd ever heard - I was hooked before he even started singing.

For me - well I was really in to Madonna in the 80s & 90s and Prince was not so much on my radar, although I liked the songs Diamonds and Pearls etc - but I did not take much notice as I was so into Madonna. Then one day I came across the Black Sweat video - and the instant I saw that - I was hooked !!!!!!!!!! Forget everyone else - it was all about Prince - I got hold of every thing I could and leant about him and sourced every boot or video I could - was so exciting making this discovery. Never looked back and I never will. Thank you Prince for every note you left behind 💜

I remember the energy in the performance, in the crowd, the electric atmosphere, the curtain going down, the horn sction playing, mayte fooling the crowd pretending to be Prince - tho i noticed it - amazing show..... OMG - no words ! [Edited 5/19/16 6:26am] God Bless Prince

Amazing stories here. I was big into his music from 82 onward but the moment I fully realised this Prince was something truly incredible that would evolve constantly was listening to 'Parade' for the first time in 86. No words. That record changed everything 4 me. SOT on the big cinema screen also - I was just kid in school it was just so brilliant no one had seen anything like it b4. 3 months shy of my 13th birthday, Kiss was released. I turned around & the vid was on the tv. That was IT. It's a joy to read these positive and personal tributes about these defining moments we fell in love with Prince and his music. I'm sure He would appreciate this much more than all the media (and social media speculation surrounding his passing). "A strong spirit transcends rules." - Prince

For me ir happened in 1983 when I was 12, I heard Little Red Corvette on a late night radio show and it blew me away. The next week an article about Prince appeared in Smash Hits magazine. I can actually remember the first time I saw his beautiful face and thinking WOW! So began my love affair.....sigh. Everyone else thought I was weird but I didn't care, then at 15 I met a whole bunch of other people that liked him too and it was great! We used to congregate in a bedroom and listen to his music over and over. Good times. Thank u 4 a funky time

Ha! Same here. My older sister had a picture of him on her bedroom wall. This was back in the 70's. I don't even think I was old enough to know words like LOVE and LUST but trust me, after seeing his picture, it didn't take long for me to learn. LOL

When Doves Cry on the radio, 1984, I was 13. Of course the music was jaw-dropping, but the lyrics also really amazed me. Prior to WDC, in my mind, songs were about 'I love you', 'I miss you', or 'let's party'. I never knew you could express yourself so frankly in a song like Prince did in When Doves Cry...
