i am still bouncing between the different phases of grief, mostly between deep sadness and anger. i am starting to come to grips that he really is dead, that his body was cremated after basically being cut apart (a thought which deeply distresses me), and that his spirit has moved on (although i hope people will start reporting psychic experiences of him). the rainbow over pp on the 21st was important to me, a clear sign imo.

as to his music, i STILL can't listen. i have been watching him in interviews and i am kind of ok with that, but hearing him sing, nope. not yet.

much of my distress is because we don't know what happened, because people are fighting over his assets, because we don't know if we might (or might not) hear new posthumous releases, but mostly because we don't know the circumstances or cause of death and whether anyone is culpable.

and the alone in the elevator thing makes me ill. since we know he died there, alone, the best we can hope for is to find out he was busy recording and happy and just happened to go in the elevator and suddenly dropped, passing quickly and without pain. my fear is that the last few months of his life, and perhaps the last moments, were filled with more suffering than anyone knows. but i am hoping that, short of collapsing in his studio with guitar still in hand, maybe it was an easy passing. he never got a break in life with relationships or children, and I think he was quite lonely the past several years. the least the frickin universe could do is cut him a break and let him go easy.

i expect the grieving to get worse around june 7 and when the autopsy report comes out.

Great post even tho it made me cry cuz this is exactly how I feel and many others too I'm sure. You said it better than I could have. Thank u.

He told us over 30 years ago: "Paisley Park is in your heart". Keep it there, because that's where it's really always been. For the vast majority of us, our relationship wasn't with the man himself but with his music. That music is still here. Our relationship with it is still here. I will miss having newly recorded work from him but there is so much already released, plus the possibility of so much unheard music to come...we can keep him alive in our everyday life in so many ways. And we can come here to keep him alive together.

exactly. no amount of fame or fortune was worth the ultimate sacrifice. he, himself, was far more precious than any of that stuff. i hope he knew that

I am still heartbroken and reeling. I keep asking why and there is no answer. sad

I view it like this:

Prince died for his art. Full stop. He could have retired. He could have said, "guys, I'm tired. I'm in pain. Remember the good times, 'cause I'm gonna take a bow and call it a day".

But no, he kept on sluggin' away. Who throws a dance party less than 48 hours after a major medical emergency? Everyone around him was probably telling him to stop, to slow down. God knows we were.

But the man was incapable of stopping, of going silent. People talk about 'leaving everything on the stage'. Prince most absolutely left everything on the stage... and it cost him his life.

And for that reason, I am going to enjoy the fuck out of every note. Every lyric. Every dance step. I think he'd want me to. I think he'd want you to, too.

I just don't want to think of him as another dead legend..like the others. Dont mean any disrespect to them. He was a vital person who seemed so alive and just a bright flame.

Maybe it's still just too soon

did you get it? that's from the Indigo Nights CD rendition of "It Ain't Over" where the groove is happening and he's chanting "hands in the air" so you start singing "Tanzania".

Was he really having that much problem with cronic hip pain? Tabloid Media Aside. What was everyone here hearing the that past 15 years. I had heard only tidbits of hip issues around 15/16 years ago.

Had it gotten worse and he did not have surgury???? I am not up to speed on this and I don't pay no mind to the tabloid media merchants of chaos that want to turn every musical idol into a druggie!

Like any famous artist who dies too young, Prince's legend will get bigger too. Most of the people in control of business, media, marketing, etc today experienced his peak popularity. If he lived until he was 97, he wouldn't have been as revered over the coming 40 years. He'll take on even more of a God-like musician status now, which is how he always deserved to be remembered and was probably why some people on here were criticial with the lack of appreciation he would garner following each new album release. Now he gets the recognition he deserves and all his future releases will be better appreciated. (Legacy vs living is merely a silver lining argument though...)

His music will be part of me for the rest of my life, after so many years I can't imagine that changing. Differently from some other people, I have been listening to his music almost compulsively in the last three weeks, rediscovering why I fell for it in the first place.
The rest, however, that's gone. Although I don't write here often the org has been part of my life for the last ten years. And I fear that is going to go. I guess it will depend on how the music from the vault is releases, upcoming books, documentaries, films or whether Purple Rain becomes a musical or not.... That is all there is to discuss now. And it still makes me so sad...

No, it's NOT over Nursev! I know this is cliche and has already been said, but even though Prince is gone in physical form, he will live on forever through his music. I was listening to WDC today and something struck me. The beat sounds very much like a heartbeat rhythm. When you're up to it, listen. You'll hear it too. It's Prince's heartbeat. grouphug

Wow, so well put. I hadn't thought of it that way.

We should all be so lucky to die doing what we absolutely LOVE.

If Prince didn't love it, he wouldn't have kept himself booked up, adding in extra events, etc. I'm sure he had more he wanted to do, but I do believe by some of his "cocky" behavior that he certainly knew he was loved and respected by fans and peers.

I have loved many people that have passed much younger, without fulfilling ANY of their hopes or dreams. I also have loved people that spent many miserable years wasting away, scared and alone in a nursing home begging to die.

We just need to appreciate what we had, and live in the now. Tomorrow is never promised.

Absomo-fucking-lutely. That is exactly what I was telling people today. Prince worked himself to the end making music for himself and to share with the world. That's what he meant by saying, "I AM music." prince
