It's literally the quickest way to lose friends. I've had to stop talking about him as much since his passing as people have grown tired of it. I'm still so sad that it's all I can think and talk about but others have moved on. And then I get upset that they don't care enough... that's what the org is for.

People have already gotten annoyed of me because I don't stop posting stuff about Prince on Facebook and Instagram. On Twitter I barely have any followers so nobody cares. I made it pretty clear after he died that if I was being annoying then they should hit the "unfriend" button because I frankly don't give a sh!t what people think anymore. My whole life I have spent being afraid of what people thought of me and I've spent so much time hiding who I really am (including the fact that I'm a huge Prince fan) and now I regret all of that because I look like a new bandwagon fan to everyone on social media now.

I remember being in 5th grade and getting made fun of and outcasted so badly because I made up this stupid list of celebrities I thought were "cool" and others that "sucked" (I was 10 at the time so that explains it) and I included Prince very high in the list of "cool" and all the kids were giving me sh!t about it. This one girl, who even to this day annoys the hell out of me, took a bright colored pen and wrote next to Prince's name "Ewww he's gay and nasty" and then she told everyone "(my name here) likes Prince!" and everyone said "ew" and they started to spew out all this disrespectful and homophobic stuff about him. After that it was pretty clear to everyone that I was a "freak". I went home and started crying and I learned my lesson.

Wow, Kids can even be such arseholes!!! eek How did you know of Prince in the 5th grade? That is cool. What year are you talking about? Also like your response to any FB and Instagram P haters. lol

Oh no...I loooove schooling non-Prince fans. I have done so for 30 plus years, and I always told folks, "Everyone who you love in the music industry is a Prince fan...doesnt that tell you something?" Now that he's gone, a lot of those folks have touched base with me, some who I havent spoken to in 20 years, and they all say the same..."You were right!" Theyre all referring to the fact that I also told them, "Wait until he passes...suddenly the world will be purple." And it was/is. nod

Make it so, Number One...

I have found that if I just stick to the music my family and friends are OK. I will admit YT is making it easy to send links to those just discovering him. But when I try and explain why I am still mourning or what he meant to me their eyes begin to glaze over. So I stick to the music. In the back of my mind though I realize they will only know half of Prince since they will never be able to appreciate him live. When all this dies down and the music/vids become harder to find I many of the "purple rain fans" will disappear.

I was into Bowie in 5th grade and I feel your pain about being teased. In 78 when I was Jr. in HS I discovered Prince and was teased as well. Kids can be cruel but I had some wonderful music in my life.

Glad I have this place to mourn.

Thanks

yeahthat

It reminds me of why I don't discuss my love of Prince to ANYONE unless I know they're down first. I also hate how people act like a song's strength disipates the longer it's been out. Meaning "didn't that song come out 15 years ago?" SO!?!?!?!?! It's still better than that shit you listen to.

"Tell me about it. I call them the Purple Rain people."

LOL ....I've actually thought this myself. Some people just know him for "Purple Rain"! And it's SOOO frustrating, because YES, Purple Rain is wonderful, but OH MY GOSH, HE IS ABOUT SOOOO SOOOO SOOOO MUCH MORE!!!! Really really annoying to have people talk about him when all they know about him is he did Purple Rain. I know I need to just leave it alone and not let my feathers get all ruffled, but he has done so much more both BEFORE AND AFTER Purple Rain!!!! AND GET THIS!! I actually had a lady at work (who I don't know all that well) be so ugly about him. This was last week and she had on some Purple Heels, which were GORGEOUS, and I walked in the copy room and I just said "I absolutely LOVE your purple heels!" ...she replies "yeah, but it's not because of that idiot Prince" ....I told her "now stop right there - I love Prince and am only able now to try and get through a day without crying" - she STILL says "I don't care about the man at all - he was an idiot" ....and I just looked at her - my face was probably all twisted in confusion because I couldn't believe this woman CONTINUED with negativity after I asked her to stop - and I said "Okay, well I think he is a GENIUS and I'm one of those people who adore everything about him and am soooo sad that he's gone - I've actually been to Paisley Park where he was found dead - so I'm serious about asking you to stop" - something along that line - thinking she will just stop with seeing how passionate I felt about it - BUT she STILL kept on with "I don't care, he's an idiot" ....I just looked at her and said "well, we can agree to disagree then" and I just grabbed my papers and walked out. I'm 48, and this woman is older than I am and I was just floored. It is just rude!! Whether you liked the man or not, it is just common courtesy to shut the hell up when someone brings to your attention that what you are saying could be hurtful. WHY ARE SOME PEOPLE SO AWFUL AND SO INSENSITIVE AND JUST SO MEAN SPIRITED. Needless to say, since that day, I have avoided being in the same room with her and will continue to do so. BUT, she is obviously a non-Prince fan - and this post is "Don't have Conversations about Prince with Non-Prince Fans!!" ....Amen to that one!

That bitch was just plain rude. Prince wouldn't have liked her anyway.

Obviously you're not gonna chat about Prince with someone who straight up doesn't like him, but what's wrong with people who only know a few of his songs? If you talk with them they might even end up learning more about him.

For example, I like Michael Jackson but in reality don't know any of his work beyond Off the Wall and the hits. If I met a serious MJ fan, I'd be delighted if they talked to me in detail about their idol and tried to get me interested too. On the other hand, if they refused to talk with me about him because I don't know enough to gain their approval, to be honest I'd think they're a total dick.

To clarify, this doesn't apply to most people on the Org (not you OP), but it is a self-righteous attitude I've been seeing a lot around here over the past couple of weeks.

There are 2 sides to this. I fell out with my brother when he said I was stupid to consider going to Minneapolis to pay my respects. Only when I was sobbing my heart out did he realise just what Prince meant to me (despite me being a fan for over 20 years!). We've made up since and he's watched some Prince vids with me too (result!).

On the other hand, I met a woman in a café the other day. She didn't know much about Prince apart from the 80s and thought he'd retired decades ago. I told her about all the mad stuff I'd done over the years to get to his concerts and she persuaded me that I had to go to Minneapolis. We were only chatting for 10-15 minutes but as I'd just bought 4 copies of Phase 2 I gave her a copy as a thank you for helping me to make up my mind (and for listening to my Prince stories!). She was so grateful and we exchanged numbers. She texted me later to say how she was grooving to Extraloveable in the car and how her and her husband were listening to Groovy Potential with a glass of wine. So, sometimes speaking to Jon Prince fans about Prince can give joy, not just to yourself but to others too.

OMG! I'm glad somebody finally said it!

I'm so sick of people who learned everything they know about the man from the tributes after his death. "Did you know he wrote Manic Monday?" REALLY!!???

There are also people who say, "Oh I'm a Prince fan, what has he done since Purple Rain?" They know his top 6 hit songs, the symbol thing and that he liked women. THAT'S IT.

Or I love when they just have to not only tell you their favorite song, BUT ALSO SING IT. The man just died, do you really thing singing his song in someone's face is the best idea? Then they have to tell you a Prince story. "I was listening to 1999 while I was washing my car once, and a dog knocked over the bucket! This is what it sounds like when *I* cry..."

Then there are the ones who mean well, and post every Prince article on your facebook. God bless 'em, but I don't need to read what Jerry the sound guy at the theater he played at in 2002 has to say about the one time he worked with Prince for 10 minutes.

OK, I'm done venting.

This is why I am so thankful for all of you here on the org. I moved to rural Arkansas in the early 90's, and you can imagine the lack of Prince fans here. Sometimes I feel like the only devoted fan in the area. But, we are all out here, still feeling sad. Having this place has been wonderful outlet for all stages of admiration and grief!

I had some guy at my work who was not a fan, tell me that Prince was probably a recluse and he didn't travel didn't go anywhere and that he didn't like movies. Needless to say, I laughed right in his face.

On rare occasions, I'll discuss something specific about Prince, but in general all people know is that I'm a big fan.

I used to discuss him more fervently from 1998 to 2002, especially after I bought quite a few bootleg CDs. One time, I loaned "Small Club" to someone who had a gig as a music reviewer in a small publication. His verdict: "it's like listening to a cover band" and "oh on that he's just droning on and on" (about Just My Imagination"). So I concluded that a lot of people had set views on Prince, that for them he's just "the Little Red Corvette singer", and decided I'd only mention I' a fan and that's it.

Done this before way too many times, especially a buddy of mine, he just can´t understand why I like Prince. He also always thought that Prince was gay, I responded: "Prince got more women than you could ever dream of." razz We are still friends, I just make sure not to speak of Prince or play the music when he is around!

It will only frustrate you. I nearly got into a shouting match with my aunt about it. I told her I don't like to talk to people about Prince because they have barely any surface knowledge of the man, his career, depth, etc. beyond a few tracks from the 80s and whatever news stories they got pieces of over the years.

The conversation we had confirmed my point.

Yep, got into an argument with a family membe because of this. It doesn't matter whether you like an artist or not, you respect those who are in mourning, period.

So much truth! I'vfe given many a class over the years. Most poeple who got lessons were suprised that I was a fan in the first place. "I figured you as a Bob Marley fan" which I am, but also a fan of great music so of course I'm a fan of P lol Funny thing is this site has been schooling me since I joined, thank you all. An ex gf called me when P passed because she said I was the first person she thought of when she heard the news.

When a colleague at work heard me talking about being upset that Prince died, she intervened by telling me (a) that he had AIDS (she was sure!), (b) that he was gay and (c) that he died from drugs, because all those hollywood people all do drugs. I really wanted to kill her so badly. I ended up walking away and going into another room.

.

.

Luckily, there are others too ... my girfriends who know how much I love Prince, and were going to go with me to the next concert he played in Belgium (just because I kept on raving about how good he is in concert), have now asked me to make a compilation of his musical gems for them - so that at least now they can 'discover' them.

.

But yes - this is why I come to the org. You guys really understand. Even my friends and family who are really loving and supportive, don't really understand it.
