Tell us about the time you met Prince. Here's my experience. O(+>

Like most of you, I grew up listening to Prince and basically being a devoted admirer/supporter (Prince didn't like the term "fan") but there came a time when I lost touch with Prince and his music. It was around that time (2002) that I had an opportunity to see him in concert. Although I wasn't a hardcore admirer at the time and wasn't up to date with his then recent music, apart from the mainsteam stuff, I felt I should see him in concert for the sake of saying, "Hey, I got to see my favorite musical artist, Prince, in concert".

I was front row at his soundcheck, along with about 8 other admirers. He answered some questions from the admirers about being either vegan or vegetarian (can't remember exactly). It was his birthday that day and someone wished him a happy birthday but of course being a JV he told them that he didn't celebrate birthdays. I didn't talk to him at all because I'm fairly reserved, not to mention I was nervous from being in such close proximity to a legend. Anyway, the Q and A went on a few minutes more before he continued the soundcheck with his band.

Man was he strict with the band, particularly his drummer - to the point that I started squirming in my seat from the awkwardness of having to see Prince give him supreme s^!$. No one in the band answered back, questioned him or gave him attitude. Smart thing not to do when you're dealing with a musical genius.

So he's playing his guitar then looks over at me and asks, "would you like a cup of coffee?" I shot up in my seat and shook my head "No" then pointed at my water bottle. I seem to have startled him with my sudden movement. He jolts and his eyes go big. He looks at me very sternly for a few seconds, which seemed more like minutes. I believe his comment was refering to me not speaking or not being attentive or excited enough at his soundcheck, possibly *shrug*. I felt like I was being scolded. Wasn't a good start to the evening but it gets better.

Jumping ahead, he's done with the soundcheck and goes back stage to get ready for the concert. I'm getting ready to go for a little break myself when I hear someone calling me from the stage. "Aren't you the drummer?" I ask. He nods yes. He asks me what's wrong. I tell him nothing and ask if Prince is vexed at me. He just says "no" and changes the subject. He asks my name and where I'm from. Then blah, blah, blah. I tell him that I just got engaged while I hold up my hand with my ring on. He grabs my hand and looks at my ring and says "nice" then he shows me pictures of his wife and baby back in Louisiana(?)(can't remember where is was from). His wife is from the Philipines. -He's late going back stage to prepare for the show. Boss probably wasn't happy about that either.

Show's on, Prince and the band were outstanding, obviously. Prince warmed up to me while performing. Might have just been making up with me from being not so happy with me earlier on at the soundcheck. His way of saying, I'm not mad at you anymore. All he did was a few seductive moves while motioning to me, which kind of left me stunned that I stood there like I just whizzed my pants.

This is really bad but I don't remember some of the songs he sang. I wasn't familiar with his One Nite Alone album. I did get CD box set from the concert that night from Prince's bodyguard. He also gave the 8 or so people from the soundcheck guitar picks and a silver color o(+> Symbol necklace. Which reminds me, I got to find those keepsakes for pete's sake.

Ok, there's more. There's an after party that I didn't know about. Right after Prince says "Thank you, Goodnight" to the audience, Prince looks down at me while he's about to walk off stage and says, "coming to the after party?" then smiles and takes off in typical Prince style. Again, temporary paralysis kicks in. I was in total shock. Others heard him in the front row and start asking me about the after party. I haven't a clue what to tell them so they start leaving just like I was about to when John Backwell comes up to me. He tells me there's an after party. "Prince beat you to it..." I think to myself. Apparently, the after party was announced on the radio while the concert was taking place. So mainly people who didn't attend the concert went to the after party. Those from the concert who did attend the after party only heard about it through word of mouth...like me and a few of the peeps from the soundcheck. Going back to John talking to me from the edge of the stage right after the concert while most were exiting the concert hall; some of the people see him talking to me and flock to him pushing me out of the way. I just dust myself off, wave at John and take off to the after party. He looks at me like, "you're going to leave me here with these animals?!" Damn right, get yourself Prince's bodyguard.

I arrive at the next latenight venue. Place is packed outside. The line-up is crazy long. People telling stories of Prince and seeing him in concert in Minneapolis (I live in Canada, a little shy of 8 hours from Minneapolis). Prince admirers are awesome!

So the people who are there from the soundcheck get ushered in before anyone else. My fiance calls me on my cell to check in on me. I tell him that I will be spending the night with Prince...and about 500 or so people. He calls me a slut but in a very loving way.

So I'm inside the place where the after party is about to take place. This time I get better than front row seats. I get to sit on the edge of the stage with a few other peoples from soundcheck. We are not directly up front though, just more to stage left.

Party begins. Prince is killing it on the guitar. He comes to my side of the stage and starts making all sorts of yummy guitar faces. And here comes the most amazing thing ever...while playing guitar, He opens his mouth and a transparent hard candy comes flying out of his mouth and lands in my hair with bits of his saliva. I automatically pull it out of my hair while I screw up my face, it bounces of the stage and lands on the floor. The girls standing by the stage shove each other for it then one wins the war. She grabs it from the floor and puts it in her mouth. Ok, back track...right when I'm pulling the candy out of my hair, Prince bends down closer to me touches my head and says "sorry" then goes on playing guitar, heading back to the mic. I must say, he had the sexiest voice I've ever heard, especially up close.

Oh yeah, something about Prince's pants...they were a lavendar color and they weren't hemmed. I was surprised to see that. He was treading on them and they were all dirty at the bottom but he didn't care. That didn't stop him from playing his music and dancing around on stage.
At the end, John Blackwell comes up to me again and tells me really quickly to email him at such and such email so I said "ok". I emailed him to let him know that the show was out of this world and that I enjoyed our conversations and my Princely experience. I also said something like good luck with the rest of the tour. He replied back with, "nice meeting you too. I'm so tired. I want to go to sleep." He's better at talking than emailing. Yep, Prince will wear you out!! It was after 1:00am when I got home and I was tired too.

True story and one I've only ever told my fiance, a few family members and maybe one or two friends about. I might have missed some bits and pieces but that's basically my wonderful experience that I will always treasure. I only wish that I went to see him at Paisley Park when he had parties. Maybe in another lifetime. prince

***first time poster****

I met Prince after his show, on December 16, 1997, in Ames Iowa, I was only 22, looked younger than that, I'm Mexican American 5'4 and at the time very thin, anyway I say all this to give inquiring minds an idea of what I looked like. My best friend and I got tickets because we were (are) huge fans of his music. Never crossed my mind that I'd ever meet him, mainly because of the age difference. I had no idea how old his current wife was, or that he preferred females even younger than me. 😳

So this was "The Jam of the Year" tour. We had seats midway back from the stage on the first level upper section on the right side of the arena. A good distance away from the stage, while Prince was performing my friend kept saying that he's looking at you, I at the time was eating nachos (we had smoked b4 the show) and basically thought she was paranoid and or tripping. But a short while later a man who looked like he was with his security, had a head set on, black suit, motioned me to come speak with him, he was on the floor level, I was confused, like me? why? What did I do? So I went down to where he was and he said, " the man wants you in the front row, to see you better". I was like are you sur? Then he said yeah I'm sure, kinda rude... So I said let me talk to my friend, I told her, she basically pushed me and said, "gooooo". It was towards the end of the show, I did, and while I was there Prince didn't look at me once. I thought that was awesome and the lights came up people began to disperse, then I was approached a second time by the same man with instructions to the after party.

We arrive at the after party, it's packed, Prince arrived later, was up in a balcony area, My friend and I were lead up to there. He wasn't were we were but he slowly made his way towards me, he was strutting had a cane. So he walks up to me asks my name, we make small talk, my friend and I were buggin out, she was chewing gum and he said "you're gums gonna fall out of your mouth". Then she tried to call her mom to tell her she was standing next to Prince, he grabbed the phone and said "Your Daughter wanted me to say Hi". This was so long ago I don't remember everything said but he did whisper in my ear that when everyone is gone "he wanted to see me dance for him". At the time I was like Ok... But had no idea what he meant. He then walked off began mingling. Later when the party ended, a few of us and his people/band members were there, and females were trying really hard to be noticed by him, it was funny, he sat perched up on a ledge just watching. I was amused by it all, then out of no where I turned and looked around and he was gone. So again my thoughts were, well that was awesome.

On our way out I was stopped by a guy in his band, he asked if I knew of any good breakfast places. And Asked if he could get my cell # to call me for directions. I said sure gave him my number and my friend and I got in her car, it was a forest green Mazda. As we were pulling out of the lot my cell rang from a private number, I answered with "who's this?" to which he said "who do you want it to be?". I was like "Prince?" He said "I see you leaving in the green car". He asked me to come back and come on his bus, I said which one he said "the purple one". 😳He said me only, no friend, so I did, as I walked on he was standing alone with his back to me, he was holding an altoid box, he popped one in his mouth as he turned around, I asked for one he said "whatchu know about altoids?" lol. I was all... Uh ? But gave me one. I remember there being 'enya like' music playing, he gave me a tour of the Bus, in the Back was a round shaped bed with his symbol on it. One of those diamond ear jewelry pieces was laying on the bed, he quick snatched it as though he didn't want me to take it. πŸ˜„ I don't remember much of the conversation except he said they were going to leave soon, I said "wait so you guys aren't getting breakfast?" He said "you can stay and cook me breakfast, oh wait pretty girls can't cook". πŸ˜‘ I was all... Uh.. He is too much. But I was truly in a heightened sense of excitement, he had a definite magical aura about him. Eventually his people came on board saying they were bout to pull out leave, he asked if I wanted to go with him to the next city, I said I didn't have clothes, my friend is waiting... Then I said wait "aren't you married?" He responded with "don't ask about my personal life". I Was like okee... And with that I started to make my way off the bus, on my way out he said my first and last name, and asked is if that was right? (I had only gave my name to one of his people to get on the list for the after party) I was shocked, like how does he know? I said yes that's my name, he said I want to see you at my next show in Indiana in a red dress, and he'd be In touch. So I left thinking wow that was one of the coolest things I've experienced and left it at that. A few weeks pass, (at the time I had been on and off again with my bf) then someone saying he was his manager called asking if I was interested in seeing Prince, I said yes but I can't because I had just found out I was pregnant. Dude tried to convince me I should have an abortion, that I was too young and my life would be messed up. I just ignored him and said goodbye man. Then like a week passed he called again from a show you could actually hear Prince playing in the background, my boyfriend answers and told him never to call back. So that was my personal experience with the legend that is Prince. Looking back I'm glad it was that, I'm not a female that can be told what to do, and when he quick commanded me to not ask him about his personal life, but obviously wanted to hook up with me, I knew I wouldn't make it past go anyway with his international playboy self. I can appreciate him as a fan not a groupie πŸ™‚.

But I did give it a try in 2001, my friend and I ventured up to the Twin cities, to see a "The Celebration Tour". I had thought well he's single now, why not (try to holler)? But as we got there I found out he was engaged to Manuela. But as fans that didn't matter. At the show we found out about the "paisley park weekend event" that was that weekend, it included a tour of the Paisley Park, that was cool, (I got to take a picture on one of his motorcycles from graffiti bridge) and pajama party later that night, well that nite the Air conditioning wasn't working in the performance space (this was June in Minnesota...) folks were all smelly, there was no alcohol. So we were gonna leave, then Prince got onstage to apologize, and to make up for the problem he was going to take us all to the movies, and that since he was a minority we would see "Minority Report" and to "follow his little whit car". Which was a bmw z3 I believe. We all convoyed to some Near by theater that he rented out. He came in with Manuela, I remember seeing Sheila E, they got popcorn and disappeared into a private theater.

I lived near to MN and met another local really pretty Latina Carmen Electra Esque looking chick who actually hooked up with him sexually, around 2002, she was a hot mess of a chick too. That being said, seeing how he went through a gang of women playing and controlling them all, I know I'm not special for him being light weighty interested in me for that secondπŸ˜‰, but glad I had that experience. He was a beyond awesome artist and True Super Star!! The one celebrity that I've met that lived up to his hype and my expectations! πŸ’œβ˜”οΈ

Looks like his beliefs werenΒ΄t that important when it came to hooking up with someone. I wish his orthopedist would have been a 18 year old beauty.

Thanks for sharing your stories.

In April 2014 I had to pass down the opportunity to meet him at Paisley Park. The specifics around the situation were the usual Prince-head-fuckery, but I've always regretted never taking that chance. Of course, the original date of meeting (I was interning for a music magazine at that time) would have been cancelled anyway, due to Prince's skizofrenik attitude of, "let's do a concert in three days! Drop everything else!". But in a brief exchange in an e-mail, it was an honour learn that Prince had read some of my work and appreciated it.

I was asked some very weird questions in the e-mails leading up to it. "How tall are you?" "6ft2", I said. "Okay, it's probably best you don't stand too close to Prince". WTF

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

(You're going to need more popcorn for this one wink)

I have an assignment due in 2 days but the only words coming to mind have nothing to do with the topic we are supposed to write about. The fact is that I am still in shock after the sad news. A part of me thinks Prince hasn't really gone. That he just wants to get some attention, surprise us or even play a trick on us (after all he loved playing pranks). Whilst most of you will probably understand and maybe experience the disbelief and varying degrees of sadness accompanying the loss of a celebrity, my sadness has been accentuated by the memories of my surreal encounter with this incredible artist. I believe writing has therapeutic virtues, and so I feel that in order to move on - with my essay and my life in general - and as part of this current collective mourning process, there is a necessity for me to share my little story with you.

It all happened in the night of 13th September 2007 during an Aftershow that was taking place at a wonderful little venue - located in the vicinity of the O2 arena - the IndigO2. With an average capacity of only around 500 people, the IndigO2 was a great place to enjoy Prince's multifaceted talent to the fullest. The shows were often freestyle and consisted mostly of Funk, Blues and Jazz jamming sessions. Prince himself often dedicated those nights to the "real music lovers" and I liked to think that I was one of them. But the downside was that there was no guarantee, as the ticket sales website warned prior to purchasing, that Prince would turn up at these gigs and this exacerbated a lot of people. While his attendance depended upon unknown factors, in hindsight I guess it was very probably to do with his remaining energy levels after his main (bigger) O2 concerts that took place just before. But the tickets weren't too costly and even without Prince, his top class musicians (such as Maceo Parker, John Blackwell, Renato, Shelby J, Cora, etc), often playing until the early hours of the morning on most nights, still delivered a fantastic show worth a lot more than the ticket price.

Therefore my friend and I always felt privileged whenever Prince would decide to turn up as we knew we would most certainly be in for a real treat. I was lucky enough to see him perform several times at the IndigO2 that Summer. Even though I had been a fan for years, I had never been to any Prince concerts before (I'm a bit agoraphobic) and I will never forget the very first time I saw him turn up on that little IndigO2 stage on August 1st 2007, as he kicked off the show with Stratus (Billy Cobham cover). I instantly forgot who I was, and where I came from, I only knew I was witnessing one of the most spectacular event one was to witness and I was trying to record every sound and every single second of it into my mind.

But it wasn't until my second aftershow, on 18th August, that I managed to beat the queues and get to the front of the stage. Seeing such a talented guy perform less than a meter away from you is - in itself - quite an experience! And I was finally able to take a closer look at those red silky boots, I even touched them whilst Prince wasn't paying attention wink. Then came the famous evening of 13th September, when I started the evening with my first "main" concert (via the - not so - V.I.P. lounge experience) and was blown away by a spectacular main show that put everything into a different perspective. I was suddently reminded of Prince's musical notoriety, splendour and impact on crowds. After a fantastic main show, my friend and I had then to quickly make a swift exit to arrive in time for the aftershow queues. I recognised a few familiar faces at the front of the queue, but sadly had to be further at the back. When the doors opened, I still managed to get to the front so it was all good. That night, not only Prince granted us with his presence once more and had already blown everyone's mind away with a show transcending all of his own standards - with amongst other things - his own half-hour-long hypnotic version of 'Come Together' by the Beatles, but something that I wasn't quite prepared for was just about to take my experience to another level.

Around 3.30am, whilst I was dancing with my eyes closed I suddenly heard Prince's voice from above inviting someone to come onstage. Startled, I looked up and realised he was looking right down at me. eek I was next to the steps on the left and remember also briefly turning back towards the wild screaming crowd behind me and feeling slightly light-headed. As I hesitated, Prince renewed his invitation by insisting with an encouraging "Come on!" then reached out for me, grabbed my hand to help me up the side stairs on the left and, as a true gentleman, accompanied me to an empty spot near the drums. It was nearly the end of the concert and he had wanted a few people in the audience to dance onstage. While the perplexed chosen three of us were dancing (or rather desperately trying to inject some life back into our jelly feet), Prince was expertedly playing his guitar and walking around us, watching us and smiling. I don't remember how long it went on for, but it felt like an eternity to me. At the end of the show, he and all his musicians grabbed us by the waist to form a line with him to salute the audience (we all walked three times, up and down the stage, before the audience's applause). It was nearly 4am by then and Prince joked about having pancakes with us all after the concert. Then the curtains were drawn, all the lights came on and we all parted our own way. I looked back to see where Prince was, but he had already disappeared. It was all so surreal that it took me a few days to actually realise what had happened.

Looking back I think that there was a message behind all this: despite his incredible above average talent, Prince wanted to connect with people and let them know that he considered himself on their level. I guess he wanted to make a difference to this world by simply being who he was, and sharing his music - and vision - with others. No doubt he is already being missed by many, whether they have met him or not. And as the realisation of his death is reluctantly sinking in, my dear sweet memories are gradually taking on the bitter taste of grief and loss. I am hoping time will heal but I know it will never erase those wonderful memories provided by this great artist and beautiful man that Prince was. Now where's that tissue box...

ERINAMONDO

Ok, here's my story. October - 2014: leaving Lakewinds (a natural grocery store co-op in Chanhassen) after a short run in, my sister was in her car following me - on our way to the arboretum, I was heading towards Great Plains Blvd, when a black cadillac sports coupe came screaming in and was in the middle of the 2 lanes looking like they were going to hit me, the car slowed down and corrected and I of course had to look in to see who the jerk was smile emoticon, at that point, I think my 13 year old daughter thought I was having a seizure or a stroke, because I started waving my hands excitedly, and was screaming, I looked back and my sister's hands were waving wildly- she recognized him too! We both turned around and went through the back of the parking lot to see where he went, he was pulling up to the front of the store and actually drove up on the curb! I knew that was my chance to pull up next to him - I had him cornered! I pulled up next to him and he had his window was cracked and I rolled down my passenger side window and yelled "Can I just say hello to you?" He actually then rolled his whole window down! I then said, "I just want to tell you that you're my favorite of all time!" and he said "Who, her? and pointed at the beautiful 20-something in his passenger seat, and then chuckled and then I said "I just wanted to tell you I love you and you're at my favorite store! and he just smirked and said "Ok" and he started rolling up his window and I started yelling that I loved him again, and he again rolled his window down (as if I were saying something important this time) I finally left because I didn't want to scare him. The whole thing lasted about 90 seconds, but one of the most exciting moments of my life biggrin

Hey 40yearoldfan!

Hey i can vouch for the first part of your story. Hunky Dory's was the name of the place in Ames, Iowa at the time. I remember you and another girl (wasn't she black?) talking to him up there in that little vip area. My girlfriend and I were sitting at the very corner of the bar next to the door he came in at. When he came and sat down on the riser it was right next to us so of course the crowd that gathered was practically right on top of us. anyway, very funny to read your account. you have a voucher! 19 years later. wow.

Thanks for sharing cool

WTF

LOL

The one celebrity that I've met that lived up to his hype and my expectations! πŸ’œβ˜”οΈ

I'm really confused by the abortion bit. confused

totally not cool....

So do I have it right? Some random Prince staffer who didn't know her was saying all of this stuff to her?

It was a long conversation with a dude who said he was his tour manager at the time, (that I included to explain the "why didn't you go to the next show" part😘) he had called to invite me to see Prince at the next closest venue. In that conversation I was explaining that going to the show, was in no way possible because I was pregnant, at which point he decided to give me HIS (not Prince's) unsolicited advice. And it had nothing to do with him trying to get me to the next show, just a fool being a fool. IMO dude was a weirdo and had a insecure vibe. I am in no way convinced or believe if I wasn't pregnant I would have been the next official Girlfriend πŸ˜‚. No no no not that, But the timing was Devine intervention in my eyes. I wouldn't ever consider abortion. And reading first hand accounts (online in media) of how Prince treated and cheated on most females😳, especially the barely 17 😬. It wasn't for me. I wasn't on a come up, never wanted to be famous so there was no reason to be exposed 😁 and or get on that kind of roller coaster on acid ride, nope πŸ‘ŽπŸ½. I'm soooo content, having the experience of meeting the genius as nothing more than just a fan, still respecting him and leaving it at that. β˜”οΈπŸ’œπŸŽΆπŸ’ƒπŸ½

For the longest time I would not have hesitated to be Prince's girlfriend or at least hook up with him if I had the chance to but reading stories about him being a player and cheating on all his women is a complete turn off for me too. I have changed and have matured over time and I may not be the most secure girl but I certainly respect myself enough to not put myself through that kind of cheating crap. I admire and respect Prince as an artist too and thank him for everything his music has done for me, but I would never have wanted to be more than friends with him. I would never let anyone control me like he did with his women.

I certainly have to agree with you that it was divine intervention that saved you from that mess lol

DarlingKris

I would of given my right hand to be his gf/hook up with him, but after hearing that he wasn't always faithful, I don't know about all that. I have been cheated on in my first relationship so I know what its like. He may be sexy as hell and I wanted to climb him like a tree, but I'm smarter than that
