In the late 80's I was living in a remote part of Devon and the postman used to deliver late in the afternoon, oh the excitement when I would see that white envelope with "Controversy" stamped on it!

Yes !

The white envelope, I remember it well. Great memories of younger days

Yes, and also Uptown

I miss the excitement when a new issue arrived in the post

I used to ring the Prince hotline in the UK, to get the latest Prince news as well. I think it was affiliated with Controversy

Used to drive my Dad nuts coz it was a premium rate number

Yes I Was there from almost the beginning. Eileen did a great job. Shame it all went a bit wrong. Chris Dawson too and the Crystal Ball magazines which were beautiful.

Chris actually started Controversy magazine, then Eileen came on board, then they went different ways and Chris did Crystal Ball.

Yeah I realise that but only found out a few years ago.

The love and energy those guys put into Prince was amazing. Didn't Chris start out as a record shop owner somewhere like Leeds?

Wonder whatever happened to these people?

And as someone else said, Uptown was also an excellent magazine.

Used to get mine from Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street as well. Ah the innocence and patience of those pre-internet days!

'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

Any members of the Controversy Magazine on here ... and greiving

Yes, indeed. Still have the magazines --talk about mailbox excitement-- still have my membership cards, and still have the treasured friends I met at the Controversy Conventions in Minneapolis 1991, 1992.

I remember Uptown! That was a great mag too. I used to go into my parents' bedroom where there was a second phone, and ring the hotline from there so they wouldn't know I was racking up the bill lol. Seems so primitive now, to have to ring a recorded message to get news of Prince! But they were very happy times.

I loved the Controversy mag. Think my first issue was number 4, or thereabouts.
I didn't get as many Uptown issues. I was a broke teenager back then. I could only afford the Controversy magazine and Black Beat.
I still have a box full of some of them somewhere.
I had a few Crystal Ball issues. I even bought tickets to a Prince Party that was going to be held in Hammersmith Apollo, if I remember correctly.

After it was cancelled I ended up getting a phone call from Camden police about the Prince Party, in 1988 I think.
Apparently some people thought Prince was going to be there and when it became obvious Prince wasn't going to be there, the whole affair ended in legal action.
I was asked over the phone if I'd like to press charges.
I said I didn't think Prince was going to attend, that I thought it was just a celebration of his music, with other fans. And no, I didn't want to press charges.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure if I ever got my money back for the tickets.

Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine and a side order of ham.

I was a Controversy member and want to shout out Edwena "Blue" (RIP) who was my US representative and helped me to convert my Lovesexy VHS tapes that I had purchased from Controversy to be able to play them in America. I had no idea about different VHS systems so I was so disappointed when they wouldn't play. But "Blue" helped me locate someone in my area who converted VHS tapes, and I enjoyed the remainder of my membership with Controversy. In fact, I still have the little care package of photos and whatnot that Controversy sent when they ended. On a similar note, I still remember the Prince Tape Lending Library that Edwena had in which you could send her a blank cassette and she would copy Boots for free. Man, that was wonderful. God, I loved that library. I've always been more into live boots than studio, and she had her full of each. So, thanks to Controvery and Edwena "Blue."

Dang I bought a copy of 3 chains of gold that is European VHSformatted. Looking to find a place to convert it but I'm afraid to mail the tape out for fear I won't get it back.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

Yes to Controversy and Crystal Ball (all my copies are up in the loft)

The record shop was in Otley, just outside Leeds, about 5 miles from where I live.

I knew the people who bought Chris Dawsons house, for years after he moved they were deluged with sackfuls of mail for Crystal Ball. They used to drop it off at the shop every now and then, until it closed.
