Here's hoping that tribute opens people up to that song and it is number one next week... one of his best tracks, imo.

That helped me heal a bit I think. Only D could pull that off imo. The phrasing. The exact perfect piano playing.

Man.

I cried too. I was trying not to.

Can we get D'Angelo to sing lead in the Revolution? : ))

It was so perfect. The best tribute I've seen so far. Honestly, I'm a bit tired of hearing people butcher "Purple Rain". But I can't fault them. I know their šŸ’œ's are in the right place, though.

.

The only exception to the "Purple Rain" gripe is Bruce Springsteen. I watched it Sunday morning when I got up. I hadn't even finished my coffee, and I was bawling. Also, Corey Taylor, from Slipknot, was doing a show at First Avenue on the 21st. He just had his acoustic guitar. He did "Purple Rain", and "Little Red Corvette". It's on YouTube. (Look for the multi-cam shot, it's better quality.)

.

The ping pong story Monday night, on Fallon, was very funny. Reminded me of the New Girl episode (which repeated Tuesday night).

.

And I wondered what ?uestlove would yell out during the intro on Monday. He did a signature Prince "EEEOOWWW!" scream/yelp. Perfect.

I think Princess were fitting perfectly for the song.

Btw when it comes to cover versions of "Purple Rain" i think this one is one of my Top5:

Had no idea Adam Levine could play guitar like that and even his (own) vocal phrasing is unique.

I think that should be the end of all Prince tributes. Nobody could do it better than D'Angelo, no one else can top that. No one.

Music is so powerful and can express what people are feeling deep in their souls - it's that what connects us.

That was beautiful and touching, and very sad, especially when he had to pause after singing "I often dream of heaven, now I know that Prince is there. "

I have avoided most tribute songs so far but this one and Bruce SpringsteenĀ“s rendition of Purple Rain were really good, and SantanaĀ“s Last December was pretty good, too, though he called it Last September.

As much as IĀ“d like to see DĀ“Angelo sing with The Revolution I also know that many fans probably would have a problem with that. Some already dislike the idea of The Revolution playing concerts again, add DĀ“Angelo and you have a recipe for big arguments here on the org.

But...DĀ“Angelo knows PrinceĀ“s catalog like no one else and is, in my opinion, the only person who can do his songs justice.

This was a very heartfelt and touching tribute.

Thank you DĀ“Angelo.

I agree. I was thinking on all these upcoming award shows there will probably be many tributes. The last tribute I saw was 2010 or 2011 where Alicia Keys and Patti and others sang Prince songs.
I remember saying I will not watch any tributes unless D'angelo, Maxwell,or Bilal are doing it. Especially D'Angelo it seems to be naturally apart of him. Kinda like listening to Aretha singing Jumpin Jack Flash. She can't not sound soulful. It's who she is. That's how I view D'Angelo. Prince is in his DNA it seems

Oh, I think Alicia Keys sang. Adore. That song should be off limits Should have been put on probation for just attempting to do that song.

Co-sign. Those three are exactly the same guys I was thinking of. And it would silence the DĀ“Angelo skeptics a bit if he shared the responsibility with Maxwell and Bilal.

D has always been a true and respectful fan...or rather, disciple of Prince, and he knows PrinceĀ“s catalog inside out. Maxwell is very humble and down to earth so it wouldnĀ“t be about him but about Prince and his music, and he could do a great rendition of Adore.

And Bilal is also a great choice.
