To get this thread back on track, Spike Lee now says his NYC Prince tribute will be on Saturday, June 4 from noon to 6 p.m. in Brooklyn (exact location TBA). Source is Spike Lee's official Instagram account. He's calling it "Prince Born Day Purple People Party". | |

It was a sombre and respectful tribute, but it's time for someone to do a song besides Purple Rain. The best Purple Rain tribute I've seen so far was Bruce Springsteen & the E-Street Band's on April 23rd during their tour in Brooklyn.I also enjoyed the Mumford & Sons tribute Nothing Compares 2 U at the end of their show the night he died as they were in town that night playing the Xcel Energy Center. | |

The Rolling Stones ...even though it didn't go so well, Prince was the supporting act for the Stones, plus Mick Jagger seems to have really respected him.
Any and ALL of his female proteges and back up singers (e.g. Elisa Fiorello, Bria )...performing all of their own music or his.

so, i just saw this on fb and not really sure how to feel about it:
. Just watched the #BillboardAwards and saw that Madonna covered the song #RIPPrince wrote for us way back in 1985. If you'd like to hear what it was meant to sound like, here's the link to the tribute we did 2 weeks ago.
. focus on "sponsored". . on one hand, i know these cats are trying to earn, and especially susannah has been having financial woes. . on the other hand, i don't like people eating off the back of a tragedy. same thing with all this BET shady nonsense. don't use this tragedy to sell your damn show. | |

It can seem that way, especially when some band members are already asking for music they worked on with him, to be released from the vault, and he hasn't been gone more than 2 months yet. Can you imagine once it is known who will be in charge of his estate, and that person or persons, being bombarded with a multitude of requests and claims of vault material some, worked on with Prince? They know it will involve making money off of it, so that would not surprise me at all. Maybe the vault stuff should just be left alone(like Sheila E said), because if he wanted that stuff released, he would have done it years ago.. Hopefully the vault material doesn't cause any riffs between some former band members and Prince's family. | |

NPG MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Some core members of Prince's 1990s band the New Power Generation plan tribute concerts in Minneapolis this spring. Two DJs and other Twin Cities musicians will celebrate Prince June 3 and 4 at the Parkway Theater in south Minneapolis. The event is called "This Thing Called Life: The Prince Tribute." The NPG rhythm section of drummer Michael Bland and bassist Sonny Thompson will perform along with keyboardist Tommy Barbarella. The shows also will include singer Julius Collins and guitarist Tracey Blake of Sons of the Almighty. In a statement, Collins says the musicians are all in mourning following Prince's death last week, but plan to celebrate his life in June. The newly built US Bank Stadium lists Metallica performing Saturday Aug 20th as the "first rock concert" at the new stadium.

This Thing Called Life, the tribute with Michael B, Sonny T, and Tommy B is in a small movie theater where there are sometimes other events. http://theparkwaytheater.com/ According to Star/Tribune music critic Chris Reimenschneider they booked it as a "low-key local tribute for their own emotional healing and bonding." Since demand for tix was so high they decided to add a third show. This is certainly NOT some sort of crass money grab but I'm sure will be a very respecful tribute by those who were there. Chris got to sit in on a bit of rehearsal and reports that he had chills from the get go.
I'm quite excited for this as this was his band in 95 when i started going to Paisley at least once a week and seeing shows. He played out there a ton that Summer and on into the years to follow... | |

Well, what does it cost to put on a show like this? It costs $400 an hour to rent the theater plus other fees (right there on the site) They are flying in a musician from LA. 6 or 7 band members, sound folks, roadies, security, DJ, equiptment... How many people can fit in a movie theater? I doubt anyone is getting rich off this.
