Questlove to Host Prince Tribute at Brooklyn Bowl Thursday

They’re throwing a party for Prince in Brooklyn tonight.

To honor the life of the music legend, who died in Minneapolis at age 57, one of his biggest fans is turning his weekly DJ night at Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg into an impromptu memorial celebration.

Questlove, a famously avid Prince fan who once taught a class on his music at NYU, has been hosting the "Bowl Train" event at the Wythe Avenue venue for years. And now he's dedicating it to his musical hero.

After news broke about Prince's passing, Questlove posted an image of the artist's iconic symbol on Instagram with the caption “2nite,” a time (11 p.m.), Brooklyn Bowl's location and the ticket price — $10.

Earlier in the day, Questlove took to Twitter, along with many other New Yorkers, to express his grief over Prince’s passing, saying “I can’t f-cking breathe right now.”

Talib Kweli was originally scheduled to perform at the venue Thursday, but staff from Brooklyn Bowl said he will not be part of the Questlove event.

Kweli said earlier in the day he was planning a set with a distinctly purple hue:

The bowling alley and performance space tweeted that those with tickets to the Kweli performance can use them to attend the Prince tribute, instead, or get a refund at the "point of purchase."

As the news of Prince’s death broke, the Williamsburg venue published a photo of the star, saying “The world has lost another legend.”

Director Spike Lee also announced on Instagram that he would host an 8 p.m. party called "PRINCE We Love You Shockadelic Joint" at 40 Acres at 75 S. Elliot Place between DeKlab and Lafayette avenues in Fort Greene. Lee said it would be "a celebration of his life. We will dance, sing and shout to his music." He also asked partygoers to wear purple.

The last time I posted here was August of 2009, on the RIP Michael Jackson thread only a month after his death. The commenters were beyond unsympatheic and cruel. I asked them how they would feel if it had been Prince. I know what you are going through, and I can say is hold on. It will get better. I saw Prince live almost as much as I did Michael. I even worked on a few of Princes music videos. My first Prince concert was in West Hollywood at Flippers Roller Disco in 1980 (now replaced by a CVS Pharmacy), and I'll never forget how in awe I was when he stepped out the back door of the venue into the parking lot after putting on an incredible perfomance. Genius...long live Prince.

I feel you. I cannot believe they both left so soon.

Lay back in my tenderness... Stay with me... Don't you go nowhere...

This is going to sound wrong but ....

I hope he had his 'affairs' in order. The last thing I would want to see is a mad race for some dollars with shoddy releases and personal posessions being sold off by people around him.

Please let there be somebody who is going to care of his legacy.

Sad day... I have a 16 month old daughter and I was lookign forward to bring her to Prince shows for many years to come. I am (selfishly) glad I went to almost every Prince concert that I could from a financial and logistical point of view.

RIP

"When Doves Cry" doesn't say it for me.

The boot "When Doves Scream" — with all of its adult language — is far more like it right now:

i've been battling my own health crisis and i missed the dance party. i woke up at midnight and thought 'i should go', then fell asleep again. i assumed i'd go next week, next time, when i'm better. but now i feel like i missed my chance to say goodbye, thanks for the ride. i'm totally gutted that if he knew he was dying and invited us all to say goodbye i slept it out so don't even say that ok?? sad

Not much to add, but I would be remiss not to post... something... today. I suppose I just want to say in this public space that I am immensely grateful to have been on earth at the same time as Prince.

Thank you, brother.

It hurts to think he could have been in pain in his last moments.

It still does not feel real.

His music was a blessing to me growing up and Im thankful that I too got a chance to experience the genius that was Prince. My condolences to his family and friends and to all of his fans. Im also thankful the Ben and the Org for allowing us to celebrate Prince over the years.

The cast of Hamilton did a Prince tribute. If there is a silver lining to this horrible day, it's the outpouring of love for Prince. Various buildings around the country are bath in purple light.
