I see was mentioned abouve, but a good example is Soul Sanctuary. If you ever hear the demo by Sandra St Victor, it sounds pretty much like what is on the album, but the credit says by "Prince and Sandra St Victor". Supposedly she didn't even know he was going to use it and contacted him afterwards and they sent her a big check. This was from some interview with her years back.

Dirty Mind? Head? Controversy? Purple Rain? Little red corvette? Cristopher Tracys Parade? I wonder U? Under the Cherry Moon? Even the others are rather speculative.

From the list only Mountains, Sometimes it Snows in April and Around the World in a Day were clearly co-written by Prince and someone else.

Not all of them. John L. Nelson gets a writing credit on Scandalous, Tony M. on My Name Is Prince and Levi & Tony on Sexy MF.

Fink gets a co-writing credit for Dirty Mind on the albums inner sleeve. I don't know about all the others, but Trevor is right at least in some cases.

lol

Prince knew back in the day...that he had to start giving credit for stuff - because there is no way he would have hit the big-time without recognising the input of those around him

-

But he was smart enough to ensure it was his name on the publishing rights

-

Prince is a genius...that is accepted

-

But to believe he created all the creative/musical output by himself is...frankly naive

Baby (Chris Moon)

(+ another song or 2 on For You)

Soul Sanctuary (Sandra St Victor) who was not all that pleased how it all happened

Party Up (Morris Day)

Chris Moon makes clear in Matt Thorne's book that he had nothing to do with "Baby," and thought that Prince shouldn't even be mentioning unwanted pregnancy, since the young girls he saw as their target audience did not want to be thinking about that. So I think we can mark that one off.

it is well accepted lore and there as an AC demo recoded of it from 1979.

and even AC has said it was his song:

From an interview i can not link to as it has some prince songs on it:

"Our friend and sort-of-manager Pepe Willie had a cousin or uncle who was a member of Little Anthony and the Imperials. I knew who they were because I was into them as a kid. Pepe said, “They are looking for songs.” I wrote a song that became controversial, in retrospect, because it became “Do Me, Baby.” I wrote that for the Little Anthony and the Imperials project. That song came out [on Prince’s Controversy] and I didn’t get credit for it. I had written it for a girlfriend at the time. She still has a copy of my demo.

I never got into all the controversy. I thought of it as we were all inspired by each other in the group, Grand Central. I brought things to the musical table, William, Morris, Terry, Charles, Linda, and Prince did too. I didn’t look at it as being ripped off."

I really would love to hear that demo--everyone always says it's "Do Me, Baby," but I wonder how much of it was already there, and how much only came later. Even Andre says here the song "became 'Do Me, Baby'"--suggesting that it was not yet that song, maybe even completely different lyrically (if there even were lyrics at the time). Was it a groove, or was there a melody? Was it some ideas that Prince took, or a complete song? If it were a complete song, I doubt he'd be that cavalier. And who is this girlfriend? She had a copy at some point!

I fully accept that there must be something to this story--too many people seem to make reference to the idea that Do Me Baby has its origins in this demo that Andre recorded. Similarly, I find it more likely that Partyup had something to do with Morris than that it didn't. But I also find it hightly unlikely that Morris had a completed song that Prince took. I'd like to know exactly what these "originals" consisted of.

Wendy was around since the latter Dirty Mind years.
And she did vocals on Free from 1999 recorded in 1982

and would sit in on guitar when Dez wasn't around during the 1999yrs

I agree. thing is a groove or melody is enough to make a song.

With Party Up, it seems it was a complete song that Prince made a deal 4.
It is possible that Morris did (PartyUp)'s music and Prince took the music and put lyrics to it...

Imagery descriptive? prince isn't getting paid all that money for "imagery descriptions" That can't be accepted in a memoir. Random House wouldn't accept a book like that. This prince Memoir is going to have the world's tongues wagging for years to come...

Certainly a groove is enough to make a song (at the very least in the sense of, make it worth listening to)--but as far as I can tell, melody and lyrics are the copyrightable bits (though if it gets to a jury, who knows what they'll do). I'm not arguing that "just a groove" doesn't matter--of course it does, especially in funk and R&B. But melody and lyrics still matter, too--and some people seem to feel that if anyone contributed anything, Prince's contributions somehow don't count, but that it's "the other person's song."

I'm not sure I've ever seen Morris himself say anything about "Partyup" either way.

Saying only lyric n melody matter in songwriting is saying that vanilla ice wrote ice ice baby by himself and mc hammer wrote u cant touch this by himself when both are garbage without the music they lifted from queen and rick james

Sorry but prince would have no career without his colaborations .. Starting with soft n wet which gave him his first hit ... And continuing with tons of help from the rev the time and the numerous other fantastic musicians that were willing to collaborate before they realized prince was taking all the credit and money and branding for himself ... Even his own father went uncredited and got pissed at prince ..
