The song is more about the event of his death and the events that took place afterwards, same with Gray, not their criminal history. There are multiple eye witness accounts that state otherwise & conflict with others, but in the end, the kid is dead with more bullets in him than it takes to kill 10 people, that is also a fact. Doesn't do any good to keep arguing the same argument with the same result. We can agree to disagree on how we view the world, thanks for your input though.

Whether we agree with the sentiment of the song or not, the song obviously means a lot to prince since afterall, it's the 1st song on the album, I think that's a statement in itself about his love for the song, not to mention the craft that was put into it.

Yes. Thats the way I listen to it as well. Its easy to scapegoat and blame others, it takes strength to "pray" or harbor positive wishes for even people you don't have much in common with or may not on the surface agree with.

I find Baltimore moving, and love that Prince can be that directly political in his lyrics.

as for the song, not a big fan. but it was moving to witness it with the victims' families onstage.

I love the song and the lyrics. The mood of it is perfect to laid back and hopeful and the guitar work at the end is stunning. This is my favorite song on this album and Phase One. I like Prince's political songs I wish he'd do more. The line "let's take all the guns away" to me is referencing the tension between Baltimore and the police department. Essentially Prince is saying lay down your arms and talk. Prince has lived in America his whole life he knows what a violent, gun crazy country it is. We've had a senator shot in the face, countless school shootings, not churches are being shot up and no gun control legislation on the horizon. He is no idiot guns and racism are the pillars this great nation was built upon.

The "if there is no justice then there is no peace" is such a universal sentiment of inequality for all I am flabbergasted that anyone would have a gripe against it. Who is anti-peace? You need therapy if you are. We should pray for those who view this song as racist, anti-police or pro-criminal.

I don't get all the hate for this song. I like it. Some of the guitar phrasings sound similar to Sarah by Thin Lizzy but who really knows if Prince was inspired by it or not.
