Prince just mentioned on twitter that Revelation is on the new album as well.

Did not hear that one yet but gets a lot of people excited over here.

Im glad to hear that, that that song definitely needs to get released smile It seems like it could turn out to be a really good album, he should have released it earlier this year instead of phase one. Anyway my guess is that phase 2 will be out early next year

What I've heard of Big City does not make me excited... But the news that Revelation is on this album is really good. I've played the semi-live leak of Revelation over and over again, and it's magnificent.. Can't wait to hear an official version. cool

Agree with this - Big City does nothing for me really. The Montreux live version sounded a bit Broadway.

.

But I still think an album with the likes of Revelation, Free Urself, Stare could be promising. I wonder how far back he'd go, would he put Groovy Potential on it. Hopefully not, the more new tracks the better. Not that I'm holding my breath that it'll actually get released......

Really? The reason I like Big City so far is because it reminds me of Tom Browne's Funkin' For Jamaica. That's hot.

Yes, I picture this at a show with the horns, female vocals and a load of dancers giving it the jazz hands biggrin

Even the opening line 'bright lights..' for some reason gives me a cabaret vibe.

I've never heard Funkin' For Jamaica - I'll check it out......

This would be Part 2 of one of the worst selling albums in his career and an album that many fans say was his worst output to date. That is supposed to be an olive branch?

I just listened to that snippet of Big City - more of this please! If HitnRun is a return to live playing (without 3EG vocals), I'm in!

To my awareness, there's no connection in style from Part 1 to 2. Part 2, according to reports, sounds like a vintage Prince album. Hopefully, it includes Revelation.

I think the original idea with the three parts was for each to showcase a distinctly different sound and aspect of Prince.

Was there a deleted tweet where Prince confirmed Big City being on HNR2? I thought that song sounded sick as hell. The horns are unbelievable.

Yes, he replied a lot of tweets and then deleted them

I actually agree a little bit with Bart believe it or not...

I think Prince's output in the last 15 years we fans have sometimes become confused on the quality of Prince's music from a technical and musical aspect set to the standards he created in the 80's vs just using an "opinion" as scapegoat.

Some people's opinion is that MPLSOUND is better than SOTT or Purple Rain, but that's opinion, doesn't mean it's correct from a technical and musical and critical standpoint judging by the standards of that certain musician, vs. just personal opinion.

While I appreciate your perspective, to your first two statements I and I would think plenty of others here know pretty clearly when they do and don't like something. Not EVERY orger is a syncophant. I genuinely liked just about all of HitNRun as I did AOA & PE. I don't and have never liked For You, parts of ATWIAD, SOTT, the latter half of lovesexy, GB, C&D, just about all but a few songs off of Emancipations's 3 disks, huge swaths of Crystal Ball, Rave, ONA, and the majority of everything released in the NPGMusic Club. Its NOT just within the last 15 years that he's produced music that not everyone likes. Its been from the very beginning. What I don't like, others love and vice-versa.

.

People have the "opinion" that music criticism is some type of science, but it is not. At all. You can evaluate virtuosity in musical instrumentality, you can evaluate the power of a hook to some degree, but what makes a song good largely depends on whats going on inside the listener's head. Which is why if I were to play you what I listen to when I'm just amongst other Dominicans you'd probably be like WTF is this repetitive shite, but we'd all be like "my fucking god this shit is beautiful". Thus opinion is no scapegoat, its context. It presents itself at the intersection of what makes you you and the particular aesthetic you're encountering. So to take your example above "judging by the standards of that certain musician"

. Thats a perfect example of the inescapability of subjectivity. If I am an expert at an instrument I will know with great detail when I perform less than stellar and the public won't notice a thing. Quality in that performance means one thing to me and another to the public.

.

As stated once by musicologist Winton Dean.. "There is no counter-check outside the critic's own personality".

"There is no counter-check outside the critic's own personality"
