The only thing that would restore his status after two decades of excessive mediocrity would be to focus on his back catalog. Re-issueing all his classic albums remastered with relevant bonus material. Not going to happen. I think what Prince is truly bitter about is not having any hit singles for nearly 20 years. He has tried using his old sound (replete with Linn drum), more of a current sound and even experimental sounds but no hits. The only songs that get any airplay are his slow jams on Urban AC radio (small radio genre)

"Rave Un2 The Joy" was supposed to be his triumphant return to the charts. As was "Musicology" and definitely "3121". "Black Sweat" was supposed to be a smash. He's already had his "comeback" following his Grammy perfomance with Beyonce and the successful albums that followed but he has gone into terrible slump made worse by his bad public image. His schtick is just so effin tired.

Yep and that's the problem. The thing is tho it's obvious that he was desperate to get back on the radio and he has just failed at it. That's why we get defensive statements like "I'm number one at the bank". The dude has not been artistically relevant for over two decades. Yes he has made interesting music for his shrinking fanbase but he simply lost that certain "something" that made him so great. Like the "Come" album cover said. Prince died in 1993.

He doesn't want another hit album or world tour or new found fame, he's happy doing what he is doing being a nostalgia act and moaning about the industry on twitter. lol

When he was on Twitter yesterday about his music videos that WB can claim rights to them if they are online etc... I tweeted him to say is the exposure not the better option to reach new audiences and open up potential new revenue streams.

He tweeted me back to state "U Mean Purchased Fame #Tradeoff" which is fair enough.

I guess it means him going back on everythign he's fought against for so long, kinda cant blame him but WB paid for the videos so yeah they do have an element of rights to them? But could the Pennies they would get in youtube royalties not be split?

But for Prince to I wont say "Fix his career" maybe stage a successful comeback? He needs to do all the things he doesnt want to do, focus on back cataloge (His strongest material) before unleasing new stuff, regular shows and actual proper tour like normal people, TV apperances across different networks/countries.

Interesting info about the vids, and even more interesting that P tweets back smile

I believe at this point, and with the help of digital releases (not everything needs to be physical, since this calls for an investment and a risk of loss), a balance could be found between reissues, vault releases and continuing releasing new material on a normal basis.

Exactly my point.... See my first line, I say he doesnt want any of that to be 'popular again' he's happy doing what he is doing.

And that's why he'll never have another hit record, he could release his best album to date next week, but the downfall is he wont do the groundwork to make it a success.

It is what it is... He's a legend, and musical genius regardless...

In terms of COMMERCIAL status now a days... Personally his last great commercial "comeback" was 2004. Musicology sold over 3 million copies world wide in total. Number #1 tour of the year, highest paid musician that year. Grammy's, RRHOF, etc... 2007 he did big things with the 21 Nights Tour, the SuperBowl, but didn't capitalize off of it, and released the commercial and musically dissapointing Planet Earth instead...

would you consider Prince a musical genius had his career started in 1993 with Come being his 1st album till present day? Reality is musically the 80's made him...90's sunk him..00's to present day...musically you forget him. I hear a million times about its his career he is doing what he wants....his career is fine... I guess i will never know why he doesnt capitalize on his past music success and tap into the vault that everyone here on the org has a hard on for...repackage it for new/younger audience... also do you think will really be talking about his music he released after 1992??

Career Fixes:

Hair: Keep it natural, but lose the fro, or the barber. The shape is not flattering to his face. Shoulder length braids or twists with a center part. He'd look YEARS younger.

Clothes: Lose the technicolor tailored turtle-necked muu muu ponchos, or whatever those things are. He looks great tailored and fitted. The suits look fierce.

Music: The new stuff lacks the core reminders of why I fell in love with Prince over 35 years ago. It's like a cake made of icing only. Return to center. "Grown/Sexy/Classy/Funky this is how it's done" needs to replace this Lucky Charms feeling that he seems to be serving. Band composition should be balanced with old and young, and they need to hit hard. It feels like prom night-lite.

Time to let material out from this vault thing .. concerts on dvd etc .. wheres that 3121 movie at ?

theres so much recorded material on film its time for a concert film or some phenominal movie thing again .. more dvds put out, some more cds of shows n after shows that I dont have to buy from some non prince place .. n lose the fro. Time to make music with Earl Slick,Jimmy Page or Ron Wood, maybe David Gilmore or PT or some other guitar gods .. 3eg was a good start to what could be .. a slammin rock band with awesome jamming players from other bands like kings of chaos.

Prince is heading to his 58th birthday in 2016 I think most of you are way past the deadline of fixing his career... he's a few years short of the Senior Citizen Era... I think it's impossible to change the ways of a stubborn old man. On the bright side he is still releasing new material. I don't know why I am replying to this fucking thread... must be boredom?

I dont believe wendy lisa and the various rev wrote tunes or lyrics .. But i do believe they let him know when he had a good line .. Maybe contributed a few lyrics or musical phrases ..and most certainly let prince know when his shit stank. Currently p has no filter and his stupid thots (pun intended) are allowed to flow like the runs all over any potentially interesting music ... Yes p needs to release better quality music .. No doubt a quality record would be well recieved and sell adelle levels .. But more importantly p needs to STOP releasing bad music with horrible lyrics and horrible collaborators .. He could have put out one record every 5 years with only the good tunes and his rep would not be so utterly damaged .. The fact that we must dig so hard for the occasional "here" or "goovey potential" is bad enough .. The fact that we have to sit thru complete garbage like the first half of hnr or even the whole rainbow record, just to get one or two tunes that are not physically painful to endure, makes the quest even harder .. A few good or ok records instead of a shit ton of bad records would be great damage control .. Maybe someday he will release something truly great but he seems lost or uncaring .. His music feels more like product than art .. And nobody with a clue wants product anymore .. Certainly not from an old dude out of touch dude like p ... We want the masterpiece at this point not friday the 13th number 23

The key word in all of this is "normal". Prince's normal is just so different. He is in love with an idea one day and the next day not so much. He loves to receive a profit for his art but has done many things to sabotage that very profit over the years. This is frustrating to logical thinking fans who have boxes checked on how to maintain a successful career but Prince paints outside the lines and that is just the way it is going to be.

There is a lot he can do with his fro, he just needs someone who can do his hair

a short cut or braids would make him look really old, like an uncle who walks around in shorts sandles and sox

There is one big-fire way to fix Prince's career.

WB should kidnap Prince and pretend he's dead.
Cue teary tributes from all over the world, pretty soon translating

into actual musical tributes, ending with the Revolution

performing the entire Purple Rain album, with Prince as a hologram

(a technique pioneered by MJ of course).

Then the PR remaster comes out, filled to the brim with vault material,

pretty soon followed by all the other WB albums.

Then of course comes the moment where they reveal that Prince is actually still alive.
Through the years he has softened because of the outpour of the emotions

and the respect from peers and public. Also his bank account has grown a lot fatter

because of the 'posthumous' sales, and because he didn't get the chance to blow it on

wardrobe and unseen videos.

So he's basically happy.
WB claims that he was apparently kidnapped by aliens.

And he goes right back to recording albums no-one buys.

("What's that crazy shit?" -"He can't help it, he was abduced by aliens!")

But that doesn't matter anymore at that point.

His career has been saved.

NO NO!!! I HAVE IT!!! HE HAS TO MAKE A DISNEY MOVIE!

I know, it sounds dumb at first. But, I'm taking about a M-17 rated, Goofy Movie/Princess and the Frog/Lion King/Hunchback of Notre Dame style ANIMATED movie about his life while he voice-acts himself and maybe has unreleased, Vaulted material play in some scenes. It works, because the generation who is nostalgic about that style of animation is young and is the new generation (I'm 18 and I'm telling you the moment they revive that animation style, this gen is all over it) and it works incredibly well with Prince's whole vibe (think Powerline in the Goofy Movie). So, everybody who needs to see it will be old enough to see it.

I'm not even kidding right now. I'm so serious.

Then, everybody is like "oh, my god, how could I have for gotten the great glorly of the funk-rock god - PRINCE!" Suddenly, he's on the radio, he's on tv, the whole planet is talking about him! It's a craze! Then it's the PERFECT time for him to release re-masters and extra-material from the vault! His sales would be several times over what they would've been in the 90s! Then, Warner Bros. is sitting there looking dumb!

Sorry to be THAT guy but technically Musicology didn't actually sell 3 million because the album was bundled with the ticket price of the North American tour (which was a genius move as soundscan counted them meaning it was top three for weeks and weeks forcing them to change the rules on bundling) but there wasn't 3 million people purchasing the album out of choice.

I would say 3121 being number 1 in the USA was a pretty good achievement though!

As for "fixing his career" ... Why?

He had a massive commercial high point (compared to the vast majority of artists) during the 80s that also coincided with a benchmark setting creative high point that helped inform the zeitgeist of the time and spawned an entire genre of music (Minneapolis sound) that secures his legendary status amongst the greats forever.

I am just happy Prince is still recording and releasing stuff. Some I like but some I don't care for. End of!
