This week’s Purple Pick is the song “Colonized Mind” from Prince’s 2009 album LOtUSFLOW3R, which was previously unavailable in digital form and now streaming exclusively in TIDAL.

The power of wording. I guess it was technically made unavailable in digital form for a while after initially costing $77 to access.

Maybe I'm missing something, but wasn't the CD available in the shops? Can't really remember buying it anywhere else.

Nope. Digital wav files were available from lotusflow3r.com. That's where The Morning After came from, it was part of Lotus download in place of Crimson & Clover.

It was availble digital on lotusflower.com when that site still actually worked.

Also, the whole album is on Tidal. Did that just get added today or was it already on there.

Good for you. That probably means that you didn't get played. This 'pick' is an insult to injury for LOtUSFLOW3R.COM "members." The description I quoted suggests that the site never existed.

Yeah, cheers Prince.

It's not "Purple Pick of the week for Prince.org". It is for everyone else. In my opinion it is one of the greatest songs he has written in the last 20 years. And not many people have ever heard it. Just like HardrockLover.......how many casual fans do you think have ever heard that one? Not many.

How many casual fans are listening to the Purple Pick of the Week?

And musically, it is one of his best of the past 20 years. Lyrically? Not so much.

Purple Pick Of The Week was an opportunity for Prince to give his fans something special. He has squandered this opportunity, instead, we get tweets saying "ask and ya shall recieve" in regards to t-shirts lol. Who care about freakin shirts, the fans want vault music, live music, remixes, video, etc.

I could understand the rehashing of songs and the posting of songs that will be released very soon (stare, free urself) if he really had nothing else to put up there, but, as we all know, the dude probably has over 1000 things at any given time to choose from to release as a purple pick of the week that everyone would be very excited about, even the casual fans.

He knows what his long time supporters want, but he simply just doesn't care. Again, it seems to come down to money, a vault track won't sell albums, but colonized mind has a chance of selling some copies of lotusflow3r if the casual listener is captured by it.

Ultimately, he can, and will do whatever he needs to do, it is just unfortunate that the fans that got him to where he is, and the ones that love him the most, are at the bottom of the list as far his priorities are concerned.

Exactly. If he wants more people to hear it, he has to promote it.

But of course he'll then run the risk of being accused of plagiarism.

Which is why HNR will be the last ever purchase I make of his music. Everything is just so average these days and the hoops that require jumping through serve up a pay off that is mediocre at best. It just comes accross as one big practical joke. 30 years of being a fan and instead of celebrating a legacy and taking pride in being a Prince fan, I find myself struggling to care. If it wasnt so average it would be a tragedy.

Both of you are (still) missing the point: it's about the digital availibility.

It's good that you bought the cd; every new Prince cd is sort of a collector's item, isn't it wink (certainly after the unsold stock has been destroyed)

It isn't. In fact, when you click on it in Tidal, it takes you to a web page with a blurb about the track and a preview. To play the song you actually have to go to the album and play it. lol

Wonder what jolly jape he has lined up for the pick this week?
