Opinions. I think this song smokes the fuck outta everything on HitnRun.

Like I've said before, I think "HnR" is first rate. Not going to say anything bad about it, as I'm enjoying the set the more I listen to it. That being said, I'd have to agree. "Free Urself" is like Kobe Bryant during his prime. Greatness which can't honestly be denied. "HnR" to me is like later years Kobe. Sure, still one of the best players in the league. But not close to the level he was in his prime years. It's that damn good. Crazy good actually...

Me likes. It has the same sort of light, trippy vibe as the alt version of Guitar - and some of the tracks I actually like on Planet Earth.

Dunno what's funnier:

- mister "I-don't-live-in-the-past" desperately trying to imitate his 1980s sound,

- or all the fans who accuse me of wanting Prince to repeat his 1980s sound (which I don't) falling over themselves to praise this not particularly remarkable track.

Your opinion is like death and taxes, inevitable. But on the positive side, you managed not to say "You lot" or "fams".

I'm touched.

"Not particlarly remarkable track" is high praise in Bartese lingo. lol

This is a good song, but I imagine a lot of the positivity stems from many people's discontent with HitnRun phase 1.

By the way, is there definitelty supposed to be a HitnRun phase 2? I was just thinking about the song, The Work part 1, which to my knowledge, doesn't have a second part.

Respectfully (of course) disagree. I love "HnR"...love all but (1) of the tracks on it. And I think "Free Urself" is the very reason I'm a Prince fan. It's is down right addicting. I can't get anough of it. Maybe it's being recognized as GREAT simply because it is, and not because of some comparative subconscious reason?

Same ThirdStrike, I love "Hnr" also.

The fact that Prince released a single less than a month after HitnRun begs the question:

Is Prince going to use Tidal as if it's his dream outlet of music?

Meaning, with Warner Brothers, it is well known he would be sick and tired of promoting his 'old' music because he had already written new music by the time the album was ready to be released.

With Tidal, Prince can streamline new music just as fast as he writes it which is what he's always dreamed of doing!

It would be nice for us 'fams' if he dropped a few old gems from his Vault.

But he probably won't do that without 'touching up' the old vault songs.

In the mean time, lets hope he keeps on streamining new music just as fast as he records it.

He must have struck a deal he is happy with in Tidal.

That's what a lot of people who are anti-streaming and anti-TIDAL are missing. Prince is finally free to release his music the way he always wanted to without record company and distribution red tape. No waiting for months for his completed record to come out while his label partner tries to work him in between more commercially "relevant" releases that are a higher priority.

but prince already had that freedom a while back, in fact pretty much since 2000, didn't he?

it's probably fastest to have your own website, like he had 3rdeyetunes.com and he put up
"that girl thing" the day after he recorded it (or so they/he claimed).

i guess with tidal it would take at least a little bit to trickle through the works onto the site.
although with tidal he does reach a bigger audience i guess.

yeah 3rdeyetunes.com reaches a much narrower audience than TIDAL, plus TIDAL is for life if it sustains, and my guess is that Prince will be dropping bombs on us weekly/monthly for the next year!

HnR is an ok album, but sounds way way too much like he's begging the 14-25 year olds to listen, with almost no proof that even 5% of his sales are to the people he is trying to sell to. God forbid Prince tried to pander to his 35+ audience and make "real music by real musicians" instead of "computer music by real computers!"

And Kobe? In the last 8 years, he's only shot 46% twice. And he's been 43% or lower 2 of the last 3 years. He's just chucking up shot after shot and his team is losing. If he was anywhere near what he used to be, they would win more. Kind of like Prince...and I would argue Prince's output in the last 10 years is better than Kobe has played.

That's correct. It's 10 times better than "Particularly unremarkable", and 20 times better than "Not particularly bad.".

Listened some more today. I'm in between those loving and those thinking it's just "post 2000 good".

I think it's absolutely worth of the "80's Classic B-Side" track label. Woudln't have made an 80's album, though, but would have snuck onto the radio some in his heyday for sure. Would have been played live some too.

I don't like the very end of it with the Gospel Free Urselves chants. But, I love the whispering chants before that, with all the pitch bending of the voices. Excellent section, actually. The funky guitar riffs at the end remind me of his 80's riffs for sure.

This song speaks to my youthful Prince fandom days on a very fun level.

Wow! If you can't hear the 80's vibe you're not listening. It has elements of Teacher, Teacher, Splash, Neon Telephone and the main instruments: drums, synths, and guitar are screaming 85/86 outtakes.

oh i've listened smile but honestly, if i'd heard this track totally on it's own without knowing when
it was recorded or what the org thinks about it, i'd still say:

it sounds a bit 2012, it has elements of Rock n Roll Love Affair (which i love) and i can hear a
huge nod to Superconductor (which i like a lot). it has that prince with a slight twist feel to it
that he got from being around Andy Allo.

a nice track, a breezy track. but nothing about it screams 80s prince to me. what exactly is it
that makes people think it sounds so 80s? just the use of synths or other instruments?

the only thing it really sounds like is most of his post warners output, but with a little bit more

variety toward the end, changing it up a bit more. he's been doing that the past 4 years or so,
throwing 'weird stuff, like prime era prince' changes into the songs to liven them up. but all of
the 'weird' is still thoroughly filtered through the post 1995 aesthetic.

nothing wrong with that, i like that. it just seems rather quiet and demure after the assault on
the senses that is HNR. i'm really hoping for an entire album in the vein of RNRLA/Stare/FREE.
bring on 'phase 2' *yay*

fingers crossed there's actually 3 phases and we'll get a 3EG album too, with Indifference on it drool

Yes, really digging this track!! You said it - nice and breezy track!! More please!!

Call me weird, but I think it is odd that many people here are digging this song, but many here cannot stand "Everybody Loves Me."

The songs are kissing cousins.

This sounds like a 20Ten song..which I like, I dig that album.

I'm addicted to Free Urself! I keep playing it back-to-back with Stare on an endless loop. I'm totally digging the effortless, unforced funk of both cuts. My head bobs and I smile ear-to-ear every time I play them. If they indicate the sound of the next album (PLEASE!), I cannot wait to get my hands on it because it has the potential to be something really special.

Seriously love this tune. At last, Prince shows he can still write a catchy, infectious melody. Had this thing on repeat last night. Addicting. If there is a new album, I hope this is the standard that it lives upto. Its just a quality, well written song. Extended version please.
