Just finished cancelling my Tidal account. Thankfully, they give an opportunity to explain why you are cancelling. I told them the sole reason was because the Prince Purple Pick of the week failed to follow through on the original offer of Prince vault tracks.

Not that anyone cares what I do, I'm just venting.

People are mad at the Purple Pick because we dont want to know someones opinion on who a good artist to check out is. We wanted what were thought we were going to get which is Prince music from the vault.

I dont go to a restaurant and order my favorite dish to have the waiter bring me something else that he thinks I SHOULD try. I want what I ordered.

Prediction: this whole "Purple Pick" thing will be over in 3 months.

I suspect there will be no "Phase 2" either

The Purple Pick of the week is very nice. But it is something I can discover by myself, without paying Tidal/Prince for this. I closed my Tidal account. The service is not bad at all, I enjoyed to listen again old albums I have no more with me (The Communards's Red was in loop last sunday: oh memories!) or to discover things I do not think I'm gonna buy (the last Boy George album is not so bad). But my world actually is not so "wired" to listen music without internet connection.

I find the whole notion of a "Purple Pick of the week" to be very patronising. I don't need someone who rates Rita Ora and Willow Smith as artists to give me advice on who to listen to.

I cancelled my subscription today and told them why, ie the lack of purple picks from the vault. and the misleading promotion. As nice as the other tracks are I can find them myself, getting into the vault is more difficult... and would be worth something. It did not help that HRN is pretty poor. Now, where is phase two...

Well it was to good to be true that Prince would start releasing vault tracks or unreleased new songs with Purple pick of the week, It's sad cuz it would really compensate for the bad and embarrassing HNR

I have thought about this too. It must be so as many are 'blown away' by, from what I can hear, pretty bland music. I could have understood if it did actually sounded like Prince but was not my cup of tea, but when it sounds generic and bland and unPrince like, then I can only assume that to be blown away one must be listening to something else altogether. There must be two streamings, one shite on which I got and then a mindboggling fun and experimental one. Maybe I will be more lucky with phase two.

Anytime you're listening to any bloody DJ you do just that - listening to personally curated music. If you are reading reviews - it is the same. If you are looking at recommendations generated by algorithms, in most cases it's much worse (choose any music website...).

Radio stations are nothing but reco machines.

Your friends give recommendations. Even if you're looking for connections between artists/releases (producers, musicians, labels) - in the end it's implicit recommendation. Live with it.

... and to anyone complaining about not getting what has been promised: Read what actually has been announced, turn on your advertisement radar and think again.

"Stay tuned for Purple Picks - new tracks, exclusives, rarities and more, curated personally by Prince."

There have been *three* picks as of yet. First off, I don't think that's enough to evaluate what is yet to come. Patience anyone?

The first one, "Stare", is no exclusive but a rare track because it officially appeared on Spotify only before.

That's one third "rare" and two thirds "more". Don't you tell me you take any advertisement for granted and for what it sounds like. There's loads of weeks to come. Yes, most of the Prince tracks still to come the hardcore Prince community will know anyway. Jeeez, with all the bootlegs around it will be pretty hard to find 5 seconds of audio that's still worth listening.

Myself, I'd be glad to hear two or three entirely new tracks over the next half of the year (as part of the Purple Pick).

You conveniently deleted 'from the vault', just as Prince did.

'Stare' was/is available to the whole world, so not rare. We got thee tracks falling under the all compassing 'and more' category.

I am certainly not blown away by it and don't consider it experimental but I am enjoying it quite a lot.

Are we still expecting to see a phase II? lol

Sorry mate, I was not referring to you specifically, I've just seen such comments. Great that you enjoy it though, I wish I could smile

Not sure about phase 2 but knowing Prince if it comes to light it will be very different to HNR phase 1, and that's cool smile So here's to hoping!

If Phase II is as mis-leading as the Purple Picks, I will be disappointed.

I think perhaps it might even be re-works of Phase I, just as a guess.

How shitty that would be.

So this week it's just a song he likes. A song already on Tidal by an unrelated band.

This is unfortunately not surprising at all..

this is typical Prince trying to add authenticity to his artistry.. he usually tries to do this by name dropping other artists.. now he's picking songs of unrelated artists on tidal instead..

.

I don't listen to DJs or read reviews of music (unless I'm actually searching for that review) and I don't listen to radio stations. I like exploring and finding music myself, it adds to the excitement of finding a gem amongst so much swill. I also don't read critics reviews of movies. To me, artistry of any kind is such a personal experience, that what one person likes someone else may not like, therefore critics discussing music, movies, books, etc., have never held any interest to me. They may totally dislike what I've truly enjoyed, or they may totally like what I've found appalling. As for friends giving recommendations, I may or may not give it a listen, depending upon what I've got going on that day. I guess we could look at the Purple Picks as recommendations, but I still would rather hear Prince tracks. I've no other reason to join Tidal and pay for a streaming service to listen to music that Prince recommends that I may or may not like.

.

I adore Prince, but if I could ask him a question, I'd ask, "Where are you? Not the superstar you...but U." He would hopefully know what I was asking. *THAT* is the Prince I miss.
