i've noticed that the purple pick of the week blurb now says:

where it used to say:

Stay tuned for purple picks - new tracks, exclusives, rarities and more
from the vault, curated personally by Prince.

falloff

In a few weeks it'll say:

Error 404 the requested resource is not available

well it's quite cleverly done, because the purple picks don't have their own page

as such. they are just songs that show up in the 'new' feed and link to the songs

as such, without further mention of them being purple picks.

if anything, the purple pick is a concept rather than an actual page smile

Actually, my old NPGMC music still plays, never had a problem with it playing after NPGMC shut down. But with the NPGMC you had the option of d/l'ing it after you bought it. With Tidal, there is no such option, so you spend that 20 bucks per month, for a couple of years ($480), and the company goes belly up, and you no longer have the music to be able to listen to. I'm not interested in listening to any other artist on Tidal, only the Prince music, and that would be the only reason I would join. I can't imagine spending $480 on music I've already paid for just to have the option of listening to an album or two that I can't listen to anywhere else except for on Tidal. $480 for an album or two does not make financial sense. So, he'd really have to make joining Tidal be financially worth it to me. Now it makes financial sense for him to go through Tidal to distribute his music, because he would be paid. However, looking at other threads, it appears the CD will be available so I will get to listen to it, even while driving.

FOr what you could come away with, NPGMC wasnt a bad deal. I downloaded everything and it is several volumes. THere is overlap of course but there are more rare gems than you find anywhere. And, as you mentioned, you got to keep the files you apid for and burn them to discs or save them to drives. This Tidal concept is bullshit for people like me who simply want ownership of what they pay for. There may be a little irony that the greatest proponent for ownership of music is taking money for music that buyers cant own.

IRONIC BONUS: Also the most fiercely independent major artist is allowing another music entrepreneur (JayZ) to cash in on distribution and control of his music rather than launch yet another independent online venture (800NEWFUNK, NPGMC, LotusFLow3r) to do it himself.

I had hopes that it would be something that we hadn't heard before from Prince. That is what was implied.

I felt there was a good chance that we would get something that was already released in some way (Splash for example) or, god forbid, a remix.

I worried that he would either not follow through, and not release ANYTHING, or that it would be many days or weeks late.

NEVER did I imagine that he would put up a song by another artist. That was like a punch in the face. Really, that was just insulting. I told myself that that was pretty much final confirmation that Prince hates his fans. There's no other explanation. All the other stuff he put us thru was bullshit and I will still feel some of the frustration of it (Crystal Ball CD fiasco, taking my money on 1-800-new-funk preorders, then never delivering, etc).

This, to me, is just blatant. I don't know why Im so frustrated by this. I didn't pay any money to Tidal (on my Free trial). It's not like he OWES me anything (except that money his new funk stole from me). It's just the whole "Hay, come check this site on Monday and there will be a new track from the vault for everyone to listen to!" Got our hopes up, counted the days til monday, then essentially fail to deliver. Bait and switch. If he didn't think that we all wanted and expected a new song from the vault, then he's a damn fool. Probably just a liar.

I need to try to push this to the back of my mind, so that it doesn't spoil the enjoyment that I get from his music catalog. Its hard though.

I realize that all of the mystery, and refusal to do interviews, and secrecy that he kept for so long was there for a really good reason. It was because if we knew the real Prince, we would hate him, and ruin our enjoyment of his art. "...and so unravels the mystery."

Wow, I thought either new songs or material from the vault would be released through this...

Next Purple Pick of the Week is ExtraLoveable Reloaded Techno-Electric-DubStep Remix 2.0 made by Josh..... Which will go on for 1 hour instead of 5 minutes!

Next week in 2013 B.C. is gonna be BIG on Tidal!

Perhaps they'll drop shit until most peoples first month subscription runs out, and then present gems. So people will have to pay. Or perhaps this is an idea he'll drop in a month's time.

Love the man and his music. Always will. But it does all get very tiring, and sadly dampens the enthusiasm.

wonderboy

I picked this up at Walmart for $12 in the new music section (not under Prince). Just finished listening to the whole album in one sitting.

I'm disappointed to say the least. Some eliments of greatness then crap. Josh does not understand the greatness that is Prince. The best Prince songs are simple arrangementsmwith minimalistic qualities. The more he puts on it the worse if sounds.

Prince songs have a thumping base, drum lines, funky guitar work and some keys. Do it and leave it alone.

If you're on an iPhone, swipe the options at the top until you find the page it's on. If you're on a PC, buy an iPhone. On either iPhone or PC, don't bother listening because this music blows anyway.

The quality is NOT very good. Listen to the album Sign "O" The Times, they've used updated masters for a couple tracks that were made for one of the compilation albums, but, the rest of the album is the standard CD versions. As a result if you listen to the entire album, not only are those specific tracks MUCH louder than the rest of the album, but the segues between songs are wrecked too. Check out SOTT into Play In The Sunshine, or, Beautiful Night into Adore.

It's amateurish and unprofessional and if this passes for quality (I'm listening to the lossless version) then I have one more reason to stick with my CDs and the rips I've made myself.

Say what you want in defense of Tidal and their venture with Prince, but any claims of high quality are laughable.

Just sayin'... wink

Hopefully this is the platform where he starts releasing tracks from his vault. My guess is that he will rework them, much like he did Extra Loveable. The best would be if he left them untouched in their raw, analog forms, but we all know he's a perfectionist. This might keep his attention for the next month wink

Prince is not a perfectionist. Nope.

He likes his music tight and likes his musicians to be flawless, but a perfectionist he is not.

He doesn't care for the ultimate quality of the finished product.

Often the end mix is either too soft or messy, and he knows it. He doesn't care.

So what actually comes to our ears isn't perfection, but rather a perfect played rhythm.

that's pretty much 'very' different to me. wink

I do hope he will release older tracks as untouched raw analog, just like you. wink

One can burn a CD if you like, print the artwork, even create your own.

You can even put it on vinyl by ordering that over the internet for your own private vinyl collection if you want. Even not expensive at all.

I loved collecting.

But what the hell is the use of having the same songs on different carriers with different artwork ?!

I personally wouldn't mind not having to upload every Prince fart on an iPod, iPhone or whatever.

It would be just perfect and easy to listen to the music straightaway by streaming. smile

I'm 49, and modern. Hey. wink

Thats all well and good until:

1) The service goes tits up and you lose all your music

2) You are throwing a party and lose your internet connection

3) Your favourite artist abandons the service and goes elsewhere

4) You want to share a great album with a friend who doesnt have a streaming service

5) You want to use the latest album as a coaster

6) You travel abroad and get extortionate data roaming charges

7) You travel abroad and experience 56K modem internet speeds

8) You find yourself trapped in a room with nothing but a CD player and an empty CD collection
