Curious. Is the Tidal version of high sound quality? I've been listening to a rip and the vocals sound slightly distorted (as does any of the lows). Wondering if it's the song itself, or a crappy rip?

Tidal version is top notch quality in my opinion but then again I'm sure the "Purists" might disagree...

I listened to the whole thing about 4-5 times. My initial thoughts are that the chopping of the vocals (Th-th-th-this-is-is-is) gets a little annoying and repetitive, as does the recurring keyboard line.

One of things I like about the AOA version of TCBU is the way it builds. I feel like this one sort of kills the build of the original. The guitar solo is nice, and kicks off a more interesting part of the song, where it feels a little more loose and spontaneous, but then it ends just that one highlight.

It kinds of reminds me of when I heard So Dark for the first time, after reading in the CB liner notes that it was better than the original. I flatly disagreed. The remix took the soul right out of it. So Dark actually turned into a skipper for me on CB.

Personal verdict: Skipper made another skipper.

Great comparison, and I agree completely. So Dark is a pale, cheap-sounding remix of Dark, which is a gorgeous, layered, complex song. Same thing here. This Could Be Us is one of my favorite tracks from AOA...in fact, I think it's fair to say that it's my favorite. It certainly has gotten the most play from me. And while I don't think it breaks any new ground, I'm okay with that. It builds and crescendos, and has little parts in the background that you don't hear for the first 17 listens ("metaphysical, cookies milk and cream...nothing mystical, let me lick that kitty clean") and when you finally hear them they make you smile and sing along.

This one has a pretty cool guitar solo and otherwise sounds like something that an aspiring DJ in high school would create on his MacBook. And I'm not a "Josh hater" either. I liked much of the production on AOA. Shoot, I even liked "X's Face" when it first came out (although to me, that's one of those songs that quickly reveals its shallow nature on repeat listening, which I fear HardRockLover will do as well, which may be part of the reason I've only ever listened to that one a few times).

So far, while again it's not breaking any new ground (and that's okay with me), the only track that's been released since AOA that's worthy of even post-2000 Prince is Stare. Someone in this thread mentioned that it was like we were back in the "High" days. Shit, all of those songs (including High itself) wipe the floor with this one. They're cheesy as fuck, no doubt, but at least they have a tiny bit of Prince in there. This one, not so much.

No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Boring and lame. That tinkly keyboard line gets really annoying by the end. Is Prince actually trying to encourage people to sign up for Tidal with this? Are we sure it's not supposed to be a deterrent?

Yeah, we're so spoiled. How dare we want our favorite artist to make music that is of the same quality as his abilities. Come to think of it, it's fans like you that's the reason why he's comfortable releasing such shit music, unable to give constructive criticism and praise everything he does. Like he needs more yes men around him...

I won't go blow for blow..you win. That favorite artist piece is interesting though and if you really mean it you should show your support for his work...its the reason many associated artist (like his current group) and engineers who get to live out their dreams because Prince keeps working his craft. Inspite of the naysayers.

I respect everyone's opinion here, but there does seem to be an unbalanced amount of negativity on this thread. Music is just meant to be music- not an expression of YOUR personality, your argument, or your ego. Not sure what, in your opinion, this song was MEANT to sound like. It's like seeing a flower and berating and critizing it for everything it's not, when actually, it's just being itself. Nuff said, peace to you all, Prince fans.

Bleargh. Dubstep-sounding, glitchy, gimmicky-sounding-effects laden dreck. Hate it like I hated art official cage. But I still think AOA, the album, is great, so not too worried. File along with that 1999 remix nonsense.

Totally agree with all this. I like the AOA version - it's quite atmospheric the way it builds and the semi hidden lyrics are funny. This remix pales in comparison
.
If he wanted to put this remix out why not throw it on soundcloud like he did with Hardrocklover and couple of others, instead of it taking up space on the new album. You'd expect him to have plenty of new/unreleased material to choose from rather than this.

From Music Times:

The densely layered song uses a smooth mix of synths and keys to float atop the pulsing drums and bass below. The Art Official Age version felt more like the theme to a cheesy '80s teen drama, where the new version sounds much more modern in terms of incorporating the ambient house music techniques of today's producers. Maybe this is emblematic of what to expect from the album as a whole.

Could Prince be moving in a more progressive, modern direction than we've seen from him in recent years?

Given her history with Prince, I can see how she would think megalomanic despots with a penchant for religion cults, incest and bloodymindedness are an attractive mate.

damn. if that's the way he feels he should just go get her back smile she's nice and her voice

complements his very well. the stuff they did together was great. but that's just the music,

no telling what their personal chemistry is like right now. it would be nice to see him be a

bit more happy in love though.

V10LETBLUES

Bass! Bottom! Dynamic range! WOW I thought Prince couldnt hear certain things anymore. Oh this is a huge improvement. This one I wouldn't acuse Prince of going deaf. The mix is far far better. The thin amatuerish repulsive AOA sound is stripped away! Maybe Jay Z offered professional studio help so as to not scare away his customers. This I can hear on the radio, the other version in Guantanimo.

So 3 for 3 so far, Stare, Hardrocklover and TCBU. I understand these tracks are not going well with the six vocal people who love AOA, but for the general audience, this is far far better/not repulsive.
I can play these tracks in the car with other people without feeling embarased for Prince ...and for myself for playing it in front of innocent people. Love it. Love the extended ending. Now this sounds like the Prince that makes the top of all of those lists.

This could be the best Prince album is many many years.
