"Newpower Soul" is like a low budget B-Movie that I know isn't very good but I find myself putting on & watching over a classic film. It's badness is part of its quirky appeal. So bad it's good. It's mediocrity part of its attraction. "Newpower Soul" is so committed to being what it is- I prefer it to patchwork quilt track listings like "Musicology", "3121", "Planet Eartb", etc.

Precisely. Patchwork quilt it is not. Imagine such a record from someone else. anyone else. It has the prince stamp.

Anyway, I like half this album. I don't believe it's a shit as most make it out to be.

Lol...hilarious

And I agree with you...It's about the moral superiority of some in the pretentious music crowd. They also have no ear and wait for reviews and trends.

Madsex is brilliant...in my Top 20. To me, if an album has a couple songs that are percolating among the best of P's massive catalog- it's doing alright.

Wasted Kisses is a hauntingly good song... Even gives me a Batman Black Album vibe...

Very unique song especially for his lack of quality during the late 90's...

I actually wish he continued the direction of Come On and Wasted Kisses, those are two really great songs... Could've been an amazing album if he continued with that direction, cause those two songs dare I say sound like his 80's work...

Aside from The One, Come On and Wasted Kisses, and maybe Mad Sex this was Prince at his lowest, you can tell he was clearly depressed creatively and personally.

It was one of his most auto-pilot album ever because, excuse him, his life had fallen apart.

Prince is too private to let us know how he really felt about his stardom, the regrets he had, his trials and tribulations. To me, it's obvious Prince was in no state to record an album but he did anyway and we got at least three great songs out of it.

He squeezed both wives onto this album. I would say I like it a lot, as I just looked at the track listing and there was only one song that I couldn't remember how to sing on sight (Funky Music).
What?

The One...Freaks On This Side...and Wasted Kisses are the Only things this album is good for. Many hollar for Until..Arms Again but I don't feel that...WAAAAY to schmaltzy fore.

The bass on the one and all the ultra subtle touches make me adore it. Seems he had that song and tried to make an album to put it on or something. The horns on Freaks r just outrageously awesome and wild. Love the effects done to them and sounds made from the performance. Wasted kisses...well...nuff said.

Not exactly...but lets use the baby seal thing...the persons equating the perception of two. As horrific as clubbing a baby seal is, the listening experience of the album is equated to that...and yet STILL enjoyable. Typically guilty pleasures r records that have a social stigma attached to them related to a genera or 'one hit wonder' status... I.E. rick Asshtley nggyu...or milli vanilli...especially in a musicaly snobbish environment like Prince.org.

I agree Until Ur In My Arms Again is very sugary but the lyrics are quite touching if you keep in mind what he'd just been through.

One good thing that came from NPS was the Come One single - I really like the remix.

it's called new power soul. u got a problem?

What Bart means is that you should have written newpower as one word. Apparently, that's very important. I don't like it all that much myself, but I remember talking to the journalist who reviewed it for Dutch magazine Oor back then. He was a big P-Funk fan and gave it a positive review. The P-Funker liked it better than the Prince fan!

Newpower Soul is the album/title track that you're referring to. The album with Prince on the cover holding the gun microphone, and the album with the song Newpower Soul, Come On, Wasted Kisses and The One.

.

New Power Soul is a song from the previous NPG album Exodus.

.

Not really splitting hairs, as they are different projects, similar to how Get Off and Gett Off are completely different songs.

Yes, Prince realized that he couldn't use the same title twice, so he made a slight variation of it. And he quotes Big Fun in the title track. That's my main problem with this album: a total lack of original ideas. It's not so much bad, it's a brilliant artist repeating himself. Everything on this disc has been done before and better.

What a ridiculous statement. Shall I spell it out?

For some, it's entirely correct to define this album as a guilty pleasure. Why? Because nearly everybody else thinks it sucks balls. There.

There was a time when I thought this was Prince's worst album. It's amazing that he's released several shittier ones since then. Mind blowing, in fact. NPS is no longer the worst.

That picture of Prince on the pillows inside the booklet just cracks me up. The whole booklet actually. Such cheap, shitty looking album art. Aren't the track numbers wrong on the back, too?

I never realized it was "Newpower Soul" rather than "New Power Soul." Christ, who cares? It's like saying I took a steamystickydump instead of a stickysteamydump.

In that case the guy is right. It should be spelt as one word. i totally understand the OCD among hardcore fans...

.

It's not about OCD, the album is called Newpower Soul. Someone who proclaims to LOVE the album should respect its spelling. If you don't, it just shows the world how you really feel about it. The Org is full of people who claim to love some shitty song or album, and then they proceed to write errors in its title.

.

It's a bit like people who use the word "genious": right there is everything you need to know about that person's opinion.

I think masturbating to clubbing seals would be worse, but I'm not judging.

Album doesn't do anything for me, but I must admit I've probably not listened to it start to finish in 15 years or so. Come On is good though, and Wasted Kisses a lost gem.

It is about OCD. you know what i'm referring to. everyone else knows what i'm referring to. there's a way to point it out. your impatience with the error points to your being a hardcore fan, and therefore OCD. i like. thanks for pointing it out. i had never noticed it. but don't reduce music to a technicality. you can love music without knowing the title of the album, and in rock and roll's case, without knowing english even.

I had a friend who claimed to be a hardcore NIN fan. Yet somehow, I would know about the newest release before he did, and NIN ain't even my scene. Mostly it would be because the NIN fans in this site would make enough of a stink as to me finding out about it sans effort.

That's what I LOVE about P. His music is widespread enough to where there's fans of ALL walks of life and with a WIDE spread of interest. It exposes me to stuff I would otherwise have no clue about.

Honest to Christ, you really are an arrogant, unsufferable pain in the ass, aren't you? I bet you're a real hoot at parties. Telling everyone how dumb they are and all. What would you be doing with yourself if you weren't out here trying to tell the org how wrong everybody is all the time? Do you have to shit up EVERY thread in the process and insult people for the basic crime of liking things that you don't like?

5,784 posts over 13 years is an AWFUL lot of effort just to say "I hate Prince and his fans are idiots." That's 4,475 days. Over one post a day for 13 years just to say the same fucking thing over...and over...and over. Jesus Christ, go outside or something. Get laid. Listen to music you like and go post about it somewhere. Anything. Please. Thanks.

Shit like this right here. Basically the same post.
