New Power Soul is the fifth track (second song) on the New Power Generation's second 'solo' album Exodus. Seven months later, the track was included as the b-side of Count The Days, the album's third single in the UK and Europe.

Initial tracking took place on 15 May, 1994, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA (on the same day as Count The Days, Get Wild, The Exodus Has Begun, Hallucination Rain, Slave 2 The System and It Takes 3). The song was included as the eighth track (fourth song) on the 19 June, 1994 configuration of Exodus, and was included as the ninth track (sixth song) on the 2 December, 1994 configuration.

Prince had previously used the term "New Power Soul" as early as the packaging for the 1988 album Lovesexy.

The album's packaging suggested that a follow-up album with the name New Power Soul would be available soon, but it is not known how far this album was developed and what relationship (if any) the album had to this track (the 1998 album Newpower Soul and its title track, Newpower Soul are unrelated, however).

New Power Generation (N.P.G.)
Miscellaneous
The Exodus Has Begun
Have mercy, uh
The exodus has begun (The exodus has begun!)
Have mercy, uh
The exodus has begun

Now these are the names of the New Power Generation
(These are the names)
The funkiest suckers of the new gold nation
Polyvinyl acetate, New Power Soul
Guaranteed 2 stick 2 the roof of your Oldsmobile muthafucka

CHORUS:
Long live the New Power!
Have mercy
Generation after generation, the soul will never die
(The exodus has begun)
Long live the New Power!
Have mercy
We don't cry, we don't die, we just multiply

Polyvinyl acetate, New Power Soul (Mercy)
The exodus has begun
These are the names of the children of the sun
Pumpin' the love sign in the days of wild
Tearin' shit up with a vengeance and still they smile (Still they smile)
Though their lives were made bitter with hard labor and no pay
These are the children that will come 2 save the day
(These are the children)
The exodus has begun
Have mercy

(Behold)
Behold the children of the New Power
Are more and mightier than U (Mighty, mighty)
U that have scorned and held back the inevitable
Must now come 2 grips with the truth
(All that is good in the eyes of heaven)
All that is good in the eyes of heaven
Will rebuke your powder monkey ways
(Have mercy, mercy, mercy)
And let that same heaven have mercy
When the wrath of the sun knocks upon your gate

Have mercy
The exodus has begun
(New... New Power!)
Uh, brothers and sisters
(Stop me if U want, it's between U and me)
The exodus has begun
Uh (New Power!)

Just..
Just cause..
Just cause it's.. (Have mercy)
Just cause it's nasty..
Just cause it's nasty it don't..
Just cause it's nasty it don't mean..
Just cause it's nasty it don't mean a.. {loop}
Just cause it's nasty it don't mean a thing

All that is good is nasty
All that is good, all that is good (Have mercy)
All that is good in heaven (The exodus has begun)
All that is good, all that is good (Have mercy)
All that is good in heaven (The exodus has begun)

Long live the New Power! (Long live)
Have mercy
Generation after generation, the soul will never die
The exodus has begun
Long live the New Power! (Long live)
Have mercy (Live a little while)
We don't cry, we don't die, we just multiply

Spatch cocks in black face offer us pennies (Offer us pennies)
When it's millions and millions upon millions they reap
(When it's millions, when it's millions) (Pluck his eye again!)
How in the world can we call ourselves equal
When their wages outweigh
When their wages outweigh the time that they keep?
(Pluck his eye again!)
And if they stood up and behaved like the humans they're supposed 2
As opposed 2 the way they are not
Then this New Power Soul would not be so soulful
(Then this New Power Soul would not be soulful)
And the water they're in would not be so hot
(And the water would not be so hot)
The exodus has begun (The exodus has begun!)

Have mercy
Uh (The exodus has begun!)
The exodus has begun
Now sing

Long live the New Power!
(Long live a New Power where all that is good in heaven)
Brothers and sisters
Long live the New Power!
(The exodus has begun!) (Have mercy!)
(Long live a New Power where, where... mercy!)

Come on
(The exodus has begun!) Uh
(Long live) Have mercy
Play muthafuckas (The exodus has begun!) Uh
(New Power) Have mercy
(Long live the New Power!) Yes muthafuckas, yes
The exodus has begun!
(Generation after generation, the soul will never die) Have mercy
(Long live the New Power!) Yes muthafuckas, yes
The exodus has begun!
(We don't cry, we don't die, we just multiply) Have mercy

La da da da, da da daaa (Yes muthafucka, yes)
Sho do do do do doo (Have mercy) Uh
La da da da, da da daaa (Yes muthafucka, yes)
(New Power) Have mercy

Oh yeah, U can sing
But what the fuck are U complainin' about baby?
Oh yeah, I will read your big ass
Cuz I think U're thinkin' about readin' me
And when the people ask U everywhere
Is that really all your hair?
Tell'em U don't tell a lie
Bald-headed son of a motherfuckin' housefly
And like George said (What?)
Get satisfied
Let's get satisfied, let's get satisfied
(Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha...)
La da da da, da da daaa
Sho do do do do doo (New Power!) (Have mercy)
La da da da, da da daaa
(Long live the New Power!) Whoo, yeah, yeah

(Stop me now)
Stop this muthafucker like we intend 2 finish, yeah
(New Power!) (Have mercy)
Mercy
(Long live the New Power!) A New Power
(The exodus has begun!) (Have mercy)
(Generation after generation, the soul will never die) Oh, yeah
(Long live the New Power!)
Shit, y'all can't fuck with me (The exodus has begun!)
(We don't cry, we don't die, we just multiply)
La da da da, da da daaa (The exodus has begun!) Oh, oh
(New Power!) (Have mercy) Oh
La da da da, da da daaa (The exodus has begun!) Oh, oh

{refrain repeats in BG}
(Wait a minute, let me check my messages)
Spatch cocks in black face offers us pennies
When there's millions and millions that they reap
Millions and millions that they reap
What the fuck is that about?
What the fuck is that about?
What the fuck is that shit about?
We don't play that muthafuckin' shit!
U think we got a muthafuckin' joystick up our ass or somethin'?
Fuck that!
I don't know what U thinkin' about
But the exodus has begun muthafuckas!
(New Power!)
The exodus has begun

U ain't gonna hear that shit nowhere else
Ha, ha, ha

This shit is dedicated 2 the memory of His Royal Badness
I know his name, that muthafuckin' Prince
Rest in peace nigga!

Cool to read those lyrics. This is probably in my top 20 P songs.
.
Exodus is an awesome album and it could have been even better if it had Mad and Funky Design on it.

Drug Raid At Glam Slam

By Staff
Miami Herald, January 1, 1995

For the second time in a week police raided and shut down a popular Miami Beach nightclub after an undercover investigation revealed drug-related activities.

Glam Slam, the club owned by the Artist Formerly Known As Prince, was raided at 2:15am on Saturday and shut down. The club's liquor licence was temporarily yanked until it's case can be heard in court.

On Dec. 30th, 'Twist' and 'Groove Jet' [two other popular South Beach nightclubs] also were closed by Miami Beach police and the Florida Division of Alcohol, Beverage and Tobacco, and temporarily lost their licences to sell alcohol.

Police say undercover officers were able to make drug buys from patrons at the clubs, some in open areas in view of bartenders and security workers.

At Glam Slam, Miami Beach fire inspectors also found seven fire code violation. Pyrotechnics were used, and three marked emergency exits were blocked and chained.

Guitar Suit Targets Former Prince

By Jim DeRogatis
Chicago Sun-Times, April 5, 1995

The Artist Formerly Known As Prince has some explaining to do. A Chicago man is suing the funk-rock superstar, alleging he stole a custom-made guitar. The instument is shaped like the symbol that the artist now uses to represent his name.

Ferdinand Pickett, 31, a Chicago bike messenger who designs guitars and clothing in his spare time, met the former Prince after the artist's show at the Chicago Theater in April, 1993.

According to a lawsuit filed with the U.S District Court, Pickett presented Prince — who had recently changed his name to an unpronouncable symbol — with the hand-carved guitar. The suit states that the artist kept the guitar to try out after promising to buy it for $10,000 or return it to Pickett.

Pickett says he was never paid and never got his guitar back. His phone calls to the musician's office in Minneapolis were not returned. But the artist appeared in photos a short time later with a guitar shaped like Pickett's.

"We think that Prince just got the guitar from Ferdinand and referred it to his people and said, 'This is what I want,'" said Pickett's lawyer, Paul Weiss of Harvey Wallner and Associates. "He's pretending as if Ferdinand doesn't exist."

The artist's business manager, Michael Kane, said the lawsuit is without merit. He called it one of the dozens of "nuisance" complaints that his client is forced to deal with each year.

At a hearing last Friday, Judge Milton Shadur ordered the artist and his attorneys to comply with the discovery process.

Weiss is anxious to go to trial so that he can call witnesses who were present when Pickett allegedly gave the artist the guitar. Meanwhile, Pickett said he's not going to be giving any more guitars away. While he used to be a huge Prince fan, he said, "Things like this make you feel differently."

Princely Pauper

By R.L.
Forbes, September 14, 1995

Last year rock star Prince legally changed his name to an unpronounceable glyph and announced that no one was to call him Prince anymore. The change, he hoped, would break him free of any contracts he signed as his former self.

It was a move any sensible manager would have nixed. But Prince fired the last in a long line of handlers last year and has been managing his own career since then. Making a mess of it, too.

Ten years ago Prince surrounded himself with some of the sharpest minds in show business. Together they sold over 15 million copies of the soundtrack for "Purple Rain", a movie he starred in.

A string of other hits led to his signing a six-album deal with Warner Bros Records three years ago worth potentially $100 million and loaded with perks: advances of $10 million per record, $20 million additional funding for Paisley Park (a recording complex he had built in Minneapolis), a Los Angeles office and his own record label.

But Prince was soon quarreling with Time Warner, accusing its executives of "enslaving" his music when they wanted to stick to the terms of the contract. Warner shuttered his office and stopped putting money into his record label.

Prince has since retreated to Paisley Park, where he has nearly ruined himself with self-indulgent spending, including $6 million a year to keep the studio running.

Last year the flamboyant star spent about $4 million to rehearse his band and build stages for a conert tour he never made and lavished $2 million on nine versions of the single "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World", which he released independently. It sold only about 700,000 copies.

He makes up to 30 videos a year, at a cost of up to $500,000 apeice, and never releases them. His last two albums, released last year, have sold about 500,000 copies combined in the U.S., according to SoundScan.

Warner recently helped keep Prince out of bankruptcy by lending him $10 million, and advance against royalties from his upcoming album, "The Gold Experience". Add this to the bill: The label is still waiting to recoup the millions it advanced the star for his previous records.

Robert Christgau got it:

"

The Gold Experience [Warner Bros./NPG, 1995]
After two or three plays, convinced that "P Control" and "Endorphinmachine" slam harder than any hip hop I've heard in years, I shrugged and recalled that, after all, I already knew he was the most gifted recording artist of the era. But this album documents more than professional genius rampant--all of them do that. This album is a renewal. It's as sex-obsessed as ever, only with more juice--"Shhh" and "319" especially pack the kind of porno jolt sexy music rarely gets near and hard music never does. And you'd best believe "Shhh" and 319" are hard--not for years has the auteur (as opposed to some hired gat) sounded so black, and not for years has the guitarist sounded so rock. As for the ballads, they suffer only by their failure to dominate. One of them has already stormed the radio--and another, good for him, takes too many risks to follow. A"

woo

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

CHERRY CHERRY

Recording Personnel
  • Sonny T. - vocals, bass guitar
  • Prince (as Tora Tora) - vocals and all instruments, except where noted
  • Michael B. - drums
  • Tommy Barbarella - keyboards
  • Mr. Hayes - keyboards
  • Mike Scott - guitar

Rozanda was her real name
But Cherry was her chosen one
Everybody said that she'd soon be dead
But Cherry replied, "At least I had some fun"
(Oh yes)

Her eyes were like a pool of 24 karat diamonds
I was the last in a long line of foolish men who dived in

Cherry, Cherry
I think about you every rising sun
Whoa, Cherry, Cherry
Wherever you are, I hope you're havin' fun
(Oh yes)

Tuesday was my big game
North vs. Central in basketball
Underneath their long coats
Cherry and the girls wore camisoles

Every time North would run the hoop
Cherry would flash 'em and they would fall but not as hard as I fell
When Cherry gave me her number and told me to call
(You should call me)

Using all the money her boyfriend Wilbur gave her
She'd buy anything I wanted
That's why my baby's so fly

Cherry, Cherry
I think about you every rising sun
Whoa, Cherry, Cherry
Wherever you are, I hope you're havin' fun
(Oh yes)

(Do, do, do, do, do)
Me and Cherry got married
And tried our best to keep it on the down low
The down low

I was combing her hair
The day that Wilbur called and cussed her on the phone
He beat her up real bad and figured I was gonna leave her
Instead I bought a 45 and set out to relieve her
(Take him out)

If he was taken out then he could never harm another
No sooner than I got there
I was met by Cherry's mother cryin'

Cherry, Cherry
Every night I ask the Lord why, oh why?
Cherry, Cherry
Another victim of a suicide
(Why, oh why?)
Why?

Cherry, Cherry
I think about you every rising sun
Whoa, Cherry, Cherry
Wherever you are I hope you're havin' fun
I hope you're having fun, baby

Cherry, Cherry
I'd give anything to kiss you
Cherry, Cherry
I guess I just miss you Cherry

Now is the tenth track (seventh song) on Prince's 17th album The Gold Experience, the first album to be credited to .

Initial tracking took place on 10 October, 1993 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA (on the same day as Ripopgodazippa and Shy); the song's lyrics refer to "'94", but this presumably was with the intention it would be released in 1994. Horn overdubs were recorded in late October, 1993, also at Paisley Park Studios (during the same set of sessions as horn overdubs on 319). The studio version of the song was premiered at a party at Glam Slam, Minneapolis, MN, USA on 16 March, 1994 (along with Hate U, Billy Jack Bitch, Days Of Wild and a remix of Pope, hours after recording Letitgo). The track was included as the seventh track on an album configured in 1994 (unnamed, but considered to be an early configuration of The Gold Experience). It was included as the eighth track (fourth song) on March, 1994, and May, 1994, configurations of The Gold Experience, before being included as the third song on a later 1994 configuration. The 13 October, 1994, configuration included Now as the 13th track (eighth song), before the track Days Of Wild was removed from the album for release.

The track begins directly from the previous NPG Operator segue, which states "You have just accessed the Now Experience" and lists other tracks of a similar style, such as Housequake, Irresistible Bitch, and Sexy M.F., and ends "but that was then, this is..." with the track beginning with a cry of "Now!"; the same segue was used prior to most live performances of the track.

(Go, go, yeah, now, go, go, yeah)

Freaks on the floor, now
Freaks on the floor, now
Freaks on the floor, now

Now that's interesting. I wouldn't have expected Glam Slam to tolerate or possibly encourage drug sales/use. Prince is famous for (almost) never doing drugs. I kind of like that the club was open minded about it.

But he said,
What about drugs? Do you take drugs?

"I'm interested in all experiences."

Can I take that as a yes?

"I didn't say that. I don't think people are interested. I'm not interested if you take drugs. I think we'd better chill it there."

So I just skimmed past it.
What?
