I just keep crossing my fingers that one of these days he'll finally try putting Take Me With U and Raspberry Beret back-to-back. Those songs would sound so good together! Also, can you imagine how well Cool would go with Don't Stop Until You Get Enough? But, yeah, I know, we all have our dream set lists...

I have a feeling you ripped this from one of my posts! Or maybe I ripped it from you! Seriously, from an artistic standpoint, I know a lot of people are not into cover songs, but I think it would be absolutely amazing if Prince could learn to play that...uh..."Play That Funky Music." That would be the most awesome cover song ever. He could play it at every concert for 10 years, and the average dumb Prince fan would cheer their ass off.

But wait, that's not enough. He could really expand on the boundaries of amazing and get Tony M back in the band, and having him rap about Manure for 20 minutes at each show. And then, yes, I'm serious, he could get a very talented backup singer who has a great voice, but instead have her flop around on stage screaming "Put Your Hands Up" at the top of her lungs. That would make Prince much more amazing than anyone else.

I'm going to see Fleetwood Mac next month. I'm not a huge fan, but I like a few of their most famous songs. I hope they play them, even if they have been playing them for the last 40 years. I really don't need them to chance the set list, I want them to play the songs I know them from and I'm paying to hear. I wonder whether people who have a life outside the org feel the same about Prince's setlist...

And you probably will hear them. They probably won't hold the microphone for the audience to sing half of a huge hit(Kiss with Prince), and they probably won't shorten any of their songs to the point of medley(Prince...name a song)...and they probably will at least sound similar to the versions you know.

Prince could do this, and he has over the last 15 years when the spirit moves him, but he also dumbs down the show to buffoonery at times, which is beyond stupid.

I saw and heard him do a rough version of this at a rehearsal. Has he ever done it live?

Second night at North Sea Jazz Festival back in 2011.

Gotta love those famz. Princey can't do no wrong, even when it involves playing a shite cover. Over and over and over again. Nope, still brilliant. Absolutely no problem. No sirree bob.

Listen, I have songs I'd love to hear live again, especially some of the earlier tracks that Prince simply isn't going to play. I've enjoyed 'Play the Funky MWB' live, but don't think it should be a live standard for a decade. I'd prefer Prince to play a show he wants to play - I loved the ONA tour and in 2007 preferred the Indigo shows to the O2, but the more hits based O2 shows were varied and enjoyable and right for the audience. Just saying, Prince can decide what to offer and we can decide what we think of it. I don't think 'Princey can do no wrong' but neither do I put him on such a high pedestal that everything he does inevitably falls short of ridiculously high expectations.

Prince gets on a kick and sticks to it like glue... Larry Graham was rammed down fans' throats for years. Same thing with Shelby J.

.

People have said this many times: There are so many songs Prince could be performing - both from his own catalog - as well as other people's songs. It would be more special if there were more surprises like he'd do a song here and there.

.

How many times has Prince performed Play That Funky Music? He once was on a Sly Stone kick... it was Everyday People and I Wanna Take You Higher over and over and over again. Why is he still doing Take Me With You/Raspberry Beret as a medley since 1996? Why not play Computer Blue for a change?

Even though I'm 46 years old and have been listening to Prince since I was 12 years old, I'm a bit disappointed in his setlist over the past few years. It feels more and more like Prince is on the "Old School" circuit. I never thought he would go this route. I personally try to stay current with regards to music, which is not to say I don't go back to listen to older music. However, Prince's entire show these days tend to be old school and he's even using the term "old school" at his shows these days. He has new music. He shouldn't be afraid to play it. I go to see bands like the Foo, The Chili Peppers, Green Day, and tons of other established bands and they all mix it up. They never ignore their new music. Prince is beginning to slip into the R&B realm of tours the likes of Cameo, The Time, The Gap Band, etc .....just with a better catalog and performance. Scary!!!!!

People do know these songs. For some reason it seems like he doesn't think people know or like these but the crowd would still love it.

Of course everyone has their list. Sign O' The Times, Pop Life, Mountains, a full Darling Nikki, a full Alphabet St. I felt that stirring up of the setlist a little at the early show in Toronto when he did a swampy version of Something In The Water (Does Not Compute). That was pretty thrilling actually but it took getting through a full rendition of Plectrum Electrum for that payoff. An instrumental Whole Lotta Love jam seemed like a throw away.

In one of his few lucid interviews around the Welcome 2 Canada tour he talked about being aware of the different types of fans he has and tailoring the setlist to them. But that was also Prince in showman mode like 'come once, come twice, it's better than the Grateful Dead!, you'll never see the same show twice!'. He obviously knows what the people want. I do agree that he's going the legacy or what someone called Old School route. On the Musicology tour his press was all about how he's hanging up a lot of these hits and you better come because he'll never play them again. Now we can't get him to stop.

How about ditching the rest of the band and just performing two-hour sampler sets. With an average 20 seconds per song, that's 360 per show. We would have songs we love in that.

Or, we could leave artistic control to Prince.

This would be hilarious - good idea wink

When did the Mac last release an album? How often do they tour?

Yes, it's the goddamn repetition. Hell, there are plenty of far more interesting Sly Stone songs to play. He once did "In Time" in 1995 and it was fantastic, but you can't do that with a mediocre band.

I can't believe he hasn't reintroduced computer blue into his set list. It would fit right in with the rock sound he's been doing with 3rdeyegirl.

Im just kinda ready for him to do free form NPG shows without 3rdeyegirl. My suggestions would be to use 3rdeyegirl to perform rock songs ans NPG for the funky, soul, jazzy, and pop songs. He made 2 new albums. Baby I know you got hits but dang you dont only have 14 of them. This whole time he's been chilling at home on the many days that he doesnt tour, the NPG should be practicing and rehearsing Art Offical Age songs and 3rdeyegirl should rehearse PlecElec. In D.C he is doing a smaller show so hopefully he wont be afraid to do something new with the setlist. I remember in 2013 when he would do Crimson and Clover, Chaos and Disorder, Something in the Water, Shes Always in My Hair, etc. WHAT HAPPENED? I LOVE U AND I KNOW U GOT HITS BUT MIX IT UP PRINCE.
This Could Be Us But U Be Playin...

classic example is Montreux 2013, saying the 'i got too many hits' thing in the middle of a 7 song covers medley, STFU already, yes you do have too many hits, play the fuckers then! smile

I couldn't agree more. He of all people don't do covers. Don't most musicians do covers to fill the time because they don't have enough material for a full 2 hour show? This man has over 1,000 songs to choose from why does he do covers? For him certainly not for the fans. I'd rather hear a Prince song I don't particularly love like My Love Is Forever than any cover he has done. I just don't get it.

Fat chance. Dude played three gigs in front of a couple of hundred people in Belgium in 2014 and basically played excerpts from the same playlist as the big gigs.

.

His band is simply that limited.

You've got 2 options. You're either gonna need a Tardis or a heavy fleece (you know, for when hell freezes over).

I really get the idea that he doesn't rehearse with the band/bands very much. I mean, maybe he just has them rehearse the old set-lists, the old compositions of songs. So much easier and more effiecient than redoing the onstage way they present COOL or Don't Stop til You Get Enough. How many years have those songs been in his stage show? 5? 7? The bad part is that they don't change how they are performed, same composition. So I really think he hands over rehearsal to someone else and they don't rewrite the way the songs are done...Easy money.
