He sings 'gun control!' yet you think he means 'no gun control!' Hm...

The DSMR line is just some throwaway line in a party song

The one song I always misinterpreted was 'America', I thought he was being ironic.
That was probably the first argument against Prince writing 'political' songs, no matter how funky that one is. Or maybe it was Free.

Far better, thought provoking lyrics:

If you're sick of evil knocking on your door
Throw up the love sign once and forevermore
If you'd rather make love and have a little fun
Throw up the love sign, everybody and not the gun

He took a record played on a dime-store jukebox and reimagined it as a bass that commands a guitar to weep while an "or" rhyme echoes long before a particular city does a GPS on our current state.

Years ago I would have enthusiastically but cynically concluded that this writer doesn't have quite the same consistent passion in the studio anymore to likely connect in the longer-play format of an album (many examples, "War" being perhaps the greatest one). But now that I've heard AOA and Judith's album (I suspect mostly her amazing writing and mostly his formerly selfish production), I wouldn't rule out anything from happening.

Now that he's shared the more mannered version, I want the guitar to stomp a new angelic 15-minute live one while Chuck Berry chop walks low and people sway in their pocketed cells, both deeply reflecting and forgetting the politics of the moment.

When you're a songwriter — and I believe him to be one of the greatest to ever live — and you feel totally helpless, once you get past the grief, or perhaps in effort to resolve some of its endless complexities, you fall back on what you do best.

Yes... no one cared about Lennon but when it was Reagan oh then it is a big deal...later he sings "eclectic chair" so you think he is FOR gun control but for putting crazy people in the electric chair? During this time he used a gun on stage and was photographed holding a gun (but i think it was a starters pistol) He also liked Reagan more than Carter....

The DSMR line is just some throwaway line in a party song

Seems to be

The one song I always misinterpreted was 'America', I thought he was being ironic.
That was probably the first argument against Prince writing 'political' songs, no matter how funky that one is. Or maybe it was Free.

I think it was meant to be patriotic but at the same time pointing out some problems but the warning of not being true has bad consequence. (now if a mushroom could was about being on drugs or a nuclear bomb i am not sure but I lean towards drugs) AND the line "she may not be in the black but she's happy she anti in the RED" has a double meaning...one is she may be broke but she is free... i think it is as he said "straightforwardly patriotic"

The response to this song is really sad. Every Prince song doesn't need to be some earth shattering piece of art or something. This is a simple song that is just a means to an end not an effort to shine a light on Prince. The song and concert is an avenue to show support for the Baltimore community. This isn't supposed to be a revival of Prince's career.

There's no reaction whatsoever. Oh sure, a little riot here and there.

Hell yeah ! It's about time for America to wake up. But it ain't gonna happen.
Must be the "great boon to mankind" that the internet is.
We're all fucking zuckerbergerized, there's no common goal or aspiration
outside of our own little tribes.
America just sat and watched Ferguson like some TV series, then got bored.

This has nothing to do with Prince or his mediocre tune.

It's about how artists with heads "big as a balloon",
feel entitled to turn the people's already too short attention span to their navel.

I don't see what a serious issue like this one has to do with pop music or show-business.
It's always been like this in America. Everything has to be a fucking show,
there's got to be a fucking homage, a tribute of some kind whenever shit happens.

But this has been a pretty much publicized release, and I was already pissed off at the idea.
The song has nothing to do with it. Maybe if it had been the subject of an entire album, something matured and with a purpose...
But it would have to be pretty damn moving and profound, and even so, it's still publicity over murdered people.
The world, the "real world", as some say, doesn't give a fuck about P's opinion on the matter.
Is this song supposed to heal the pain of the families? Really?

Where was Prince when 12 year old Tamir Rice was shot in the torso, 6 months ago?
Where's the song "Cleveland"?

What strikes me is that no one here seems to think that this is not decent.
We're here discussing about the musical qualities of it, and no one except ol'ranting myself expresses a disbelief of some kind.

EroticDreamer

Prince has caved.

After all these years of no longer being able to reach the masses with his wit he sinks to his lowest and offers this piffle... for their temporary adornment. The Walter Scott shooting in South Carolina is so much more deserving of national attention regarding police brutality and misconduct but Prince obviously saw a larger rally point in Baltimore. Ferguson must not have anything better than a Holiday Inn...

-

Like Purple & Gold, he's just too far self-removed from the real world to offer more than this. Baltimore is amatuer night for Prince and I agree that he's forgotten the meaning of dignity. No one will be chanting this song the next day but it gives Prince the pathetic opportunity to do a few interviews. Pathetic in the sense that he needs the attention. Really, Prince? After all these years and every opportunity you've been blessed with and you still haven't outgrown that itch?

Punk....

-

I'm biased and disgusted that he makes reference to michael brown in the song because he's joined the bandwagon that knows it's political suicide to say anything anti-Ferguson.

-

I respect his sentiment and understand that there are real issues that need more attention and fixes but his music is no longer the bridge to get me there.

Such a sad day.

It's not going to go down as a classic, but it's a nice little song. I don't see why some people are having such an adverse reaction to it.... Chill people. Sign of The Times part 2 is not happening, and no one is going to start a riot in LA solely because of a Prince song (except maybe Zelaria).

I'm looking forward to hearing him perform it tomorrow!
