Probably Kamasutra, but it is just muzak so it does not really count.

.

Probably Emancipation, as it is just so uneven with a lot of filler and 4th grade rap jams and syrupy sweet ballads.

.

Then Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic, absolutely jam packed with dated anodyne music. The songs sound like they were dated in 1999 and it sounds like it was recorded in October 1988.

.

Also New Power Soul, just one lame dance jam after another, it is self indulgent with Cream. The late 90s were not his time.

Damn! That's recent.
Pity, it was a great place to hear AhDio shows and stuff without having to dig the internet.

I'll have to agree on MPLSound. It's the only album he's made that I've found to be truly awful. I think the fact that tracks one and two are so terrible just sort of dooms the entire record for me. Another Like Me is unforgivable. Remember when an instrumental version of it popped up online and everybody was sure it was an imposter trying to cop the Minneapolis Sound? And then it turned out to be the real thing?? Exactly.

"Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic". Besides "Greatest Romance", the songs on the album sound like Prince watched Total Request Live from Paisley Park and recorded songs for the album with the teeny-bop market, hip-hop market and rock market in mind. The opening song "Undisputed" makes me physically ill at how out-of-touch his approach to making aggressive music. His vocal performances on "Undisputed" and "Prettyman" are braggadocious but the music and lyrics sound like he should be embarassed. On top of that, in my opinion, I hated how he essentially tucked his tail between his legs by amending his complaints about major record companies by signing a pact with an executive that is notorious for business practices he rails against on Tavis Smiley. "Rave" is the worst album of the nineties for him.

What Prince album do you find the least listenable? Is there a particular album that you have a hard time listening to? For me, it's MPLSound. I hate that album. I find almost nothing redeeming on it. Even the few songs that I can almost stomach (Dance 4 Me) sound like a shitty imitations of past songs, made all the worse by his attempt to give them the Mineapolis sound treatment. It just emphasizes how far he had fallen. Planet Earth comes close, but it's saved by the sublime Somewhere Here on Earth and All the Midnights in the World. At one point in time, for several years in fact, I thought NPS would be the album I found the least listenable. But Come On, The One, Wasted Kisses, and a couple others help elevate it a bit.

I completely agree with this. I have found music to listen to on every Prince album I have ever bought except for MPLSound. Aside from about a minute of Ol Skool Company, I cannot listen to this cd. Even The Vault cd which is not good has some enjoyable tunes on it, but MPLSound does not. Planet Earth has some very high highs(TOUWC, SHOE, CR) but some low lows as well(PE, Resolution) but it is not a bad listen. MPLSsound was the virst Prince CD ever that I did not like really anything at all on it and the only one ever(so far!).

If we're counting everything he's released, the simple answer is Karmasutra. It's unlistenable elevator music without a single redeeming musical moment. If we're talking major releases, for me it's TRC because its antiquated religious ideology repulses me on a very personal level. I know a lot of Prince fans have suggested consciously ignoring the lyrics, but to me that is almost hilarious for how pathetic it sounds. I want to enjoy both music and lyrics on an album. TRC has the worst lyrics ever written of all the Prince albums because I'm so strongly set against the theology.

Tricky one. I can't listen to MPLSound, AOA or TRC at all. There are a few that only have one or two tracks on them that I can stand - Planet Earth, Musicology and 3121 spring to mind.

*Edited to add: Can't believe I overlooked 20Ten. It's so shit-awful I forgot it even existed.

^^ true, but I personally find that the quality as a whole on Rave sucks worse than MPLSound, which is a tough contender for total crap also ^^

Surprisingly, at least for someone who bitches about Prince a lot, I LOVE Rave. Both versions, but especially Rave Un2. I think he could still write strong pop tunes back then, and I really enjoy the wide range of styles on the album. I'm not being sarcastic. I love Rave.

I didn't appreciate Rave when it 1st came out but I like it quite a bit now.

I can say the same about Chaos & Disorder.

I also Chaos and Disorder much more than I did when it came out. I suppose it's now set in a context of several shitty albums, while at the time there hadn't really been any before then.
