It's so hard to believe If It'll Make U Happy was recorded for 1999. I really would like to know for definite who's singing the backing vocals. Sound like Andre, which would be pretty cool.

[Edited 3/22/15 17:09pm]

At the time, "1999" didn't exist (at least in recorded form, until a few months later), and the overall concept was still being fleshed out. I think I hear Dez a little bit.

I have all 4 on replay and have been binge listening to them all afternoon. spectacular!

I agree! As we all gripe about the snippets and such, I have to just be thankful for sweet purple gold like this one track.

Even though having a 2 minute samples are a tease, there still amazing to actually listen to. As to not how they only sound but where they fit in with Prince's recording history. None of the songs that have just appeared weren't meant to be compiled together much less contrasted againist each other. Most of all, it really does alot diservice to alot this material in the way that this has been presented. Its cheap and amatuer it shows a true lack knowledge with regard to the material. To present some grail-esque tracks with fakes is completely unexcusable and it really does a disservice to the importance of the material.

Totally random: When I used to dj in college I would begin every night with "Round and Round" by Tevin Campbell and end the show with "Purple Rain." In between I always slipped in "Do Me, Baby." It's called Purple Indoctrination, baby, and the people LOVED it.

Is this the best quality version of Mutiny with Prince on vocals? It sounds better than any version I recall hearing before. I love it.

It was a crappy outtakes release anyway. Most of the tracks were old news and almost all of the previously unheard tracks were just samples. Big disappointment. mad

47 tracks or so and all I took away from it was Computer Blue with hallway speech which was previously only in mono as well as Baby I'm A Star studio version, Prince's versions of I Guess I'm Crazy and Ain't No Place Like U, Bonnie Raitt's I Need A Man plus the remixes of Trust, P. Control, The Holy River and Hot Wit U. But that's something, I guess. smile

That's quite a bit actually. wink

It seems the samples are just a tease. Shame on.... somebody.

Maybe eventually we'll hear them in full?

I hope the full versions follow... but you never know. Maybe it'll just keep growing a bit at a time like Cosmic Day.

Okay, so which tracks do we know are fakes:

Daisy Miller

I Miss You -- at least the "Extended"-ness of it, according to a post on the other thread)

P. Control (Mix 9 Ful Length) -- I think someone argued this on the other thread. I haven't even listened to this track myself, because I'd already seen that post, and there were other things I was more interested in.

Questionable:

the piano rehearsal -- I know people go different ways on this, and there probably won't be a resolution unless we could definitely attribute it to someone else

Questions I Have:

Closer 2 U -- who is it? when does it come from? anyone know?

Insatiable overdubs -- Big Chick said something about this on the other thread, but I don't remember. What's its provenance?

Dopamine Rush -- okay, I listened to it. But what's its relationhip to the other Dopamine Rushes -- just an edit?

Speeds?

Extraloveable has appeared in at least two different speeds. Is this the correct one?

I Wonder has also been slower in the past. Is this what it should sound like?

Excellent question! I want to know about this as well. Anyone know?

.

.

This leak appears to provide us with a bit higher-up-the-pipe generation sources of these tracks, with (occasionally) some odd attempts by one or more of the traders of widening the stereo separation and increasing the lows (and some questionable noise reduction attempts).

.

But these leaks aren't entirely new sources by any means, just cleaner or one or two tape generations closer-- and/or partially free from the artificial digital downgrades and some of the tagging by earlier leakers of the same sources.

.

As for 'Extraloveable', this version, and the other widely circulating forms of it, are a still a trifle too fast versus its proper playback speed, inasfar as I can tell. Since the quality of the source is very average, 'decelerating' it might not yield entirely pleasing results versus how the track really would sound at proper playback speed from the master. Playback speed needs to be reduced by about probably at least ~1.90% - 2.15%. The inaccurate speed becomes quite apparent in the vocals in certain parts of the song. But the 'less energetic' nature of the suggested downward adjustment will most likely disappoint fans of the track used to hearing it unadjusted from the boots-- the instrumentation driving the song is certainly more exciting at the higher (but inaccurate) rate of this and earlier leaks. The slower adjustment also makes clearer the 'demo' nature of the mix.

.

'I Wonder' is closer to its proper playback speed, but still too fast. The so-called 'Camille'-esque version I imagine is an artifact of multiple generations of taping. Compounded by that some of the background vocals might have in fact been sped-up in the master. It might unofficially work better as a Camille track, however, in a similar vein to 'U Got the Look'.

.

.

P. Control (Mix 9 Ful Length) is not a fake remix or a fake track. This version is 100 percent real. Maybe someone tried to do a fan remix of the track but this isnt that.

Closer 2 U- is a Jill Jones track, theres very little recording information on this song and also this was the same case with "4 Lust" when it first appeared.

Insatiable#1 was the very first state the song the was. It's more like a work in progress. The song comes from the 11/27/1990 version of the "Diamond and Pearls" tape that Prince submitted to WB

Extralovable is at the correct speed. It is also best version that's in fans hands.

The piano rehearsal is completely fake (nice effort though) and also "Daisy Miller"

"Miss You"extended, blue fish did a go job with it but putting it in this state turns it into a fake.

Okay people, on Guitars101.com there is a guy called Richard Dower and he's the real deal when it comes to Prince bootlegs. Here a sample of what he's posted so far regarding these new leaks. Apparently he got a lifetime ban from here for some reason.

First thing i listened to was the Hallway Speech version of Computer Blue.

Its superb....its BLOWS anything i did or had out of the water, quality wise....BUT...its still **not** T.'s pristine quality source.

It might be mp3 compression, but i think T. still has the pristine digital copy.
No matter...if this is as good as we can get then AWESOME!

Finally...after all these years, we have it!....and the full hallways speech in this quality is such a joy and gave me such a buzz!

Lisa #2....legit, its a different mixdown, you hear alot more of the backing tracks, i dont think its a different version per se, just a different mixdown and you hear different multitracks in the mix you didnt hear before.

Jealous Girl...imo this is a reworked version, its not the 1981 version, it sounds like it was revamped in 1987 or 88, Prince was not using horns in 1981...Eric and Eddie M. only came onto the scene in 1984.

Standing In The Rain....sounds like a auidio outtake from the Grafitti Bridge movie....like a deleted scene from the film.

The Baby I'm A Star demo is SUPER INTERESTNG!....why?...i had this on a cassette i got from a UK collector in early 1990. It also had lots of other Purple Rain outtakes.
That cassette was the source for the stereo copy of Computer Blue i had, and other tracks that ended up on The Work.

What is interesting is that UPTOWN labeled this track a fake!, i think the reason was that the track was speed WAY UP!.....it was chipmunk, sounded nothing like Prince.

Well Done....a few extra beats at the start, but overall the same as what we had before....but, Deposition and The Work have better quality.

I Wonder.....runs too fast, the its been pitched up from the Deposition version, its cleaner...the denoising is pretty good, not swirly. I thinks its better the The Work or Deposition/Preposition.....but its needs a serious pitch down.

This runs too fast, and i think Deposition runs too slow....so if someone can pitch this somewhere in the middle i think we'll have a winner!

Velvet Kitty Cat.....this version ain't the 1983 version, to me this sounds like a reworked version from much later. Wasn't this propsed as a track on that Roadhouse Garden project?....so we're talking 1998 here.

Mo' Fun, pointless....Fantasia had this nailed, Mo' Fun came from an in-house WB cassette single, Fantasia 3CD has the definitive copy. Though i have always liked this track myself..... smile

Big Tall Wall....its incomplete, the original drum beats intro is missing, the end of the track is also missing. Obvious signs of fan dehissing/denoising.....mr. swirly swirl.

I cant remember too well what the source on The Work sounds like, i *think* i used The Jewel Box 1 or 2 as the source, because it was the full version.
Then i put a higher quality edited version on the later CDR of The Work EE....i remember using an Italian 4CD "Only 4 U" as the source.

I'd have to compare the sources....but this one newly circulating sounds pretty good to me, keeper.

Allegiance....this sounds like that track T. talked about, he had a copy from an in-house WB cassette, this seems to suffer from mp3 compression....so i don't think its T.'s actually source copy.

Overall i would say this is better then Deposition, though its been a very long time since i heard that boot.

Strange Way Of Saying I Love U - like night and day...lol. bloody fans!, whomever leaked it back in the day ran it through a freaking telephone line....they really fecked up the sound, on purpose!

Collector BS....the audio hear is pristine, albeit edited/faded down....on purpose.

Good Man...not new, it came from a DAT, i put this track on The Work EE back in the day....i think this surfaced in 2004. The only oddity is that Your Love Is So Hard from the same DAT never leaked?

It seems obvious that a lot of these tracks were pulled out of the vault and reworked/revamped. Most of them were originally recorded in 1981/82....Prince obvious pulled them out of the vault and revamped them during 1986-1988....I think most of these originate from 87 and 88, the production is of that era, obvious giveaway are the Eric Leads horns.

Prince wasn't using live horns back in 81 or 82....he would use a synth to imitate a horn line and then bring in Eric or Matt to replace the synth with horns...a good example is Pink Cashmere.

Someone asked this question on Prince.org about Computer Blue:

"What's interesting is that around the 7:10 mark on the cut and past job we had before (Liberation mix) there's the opening/ending guitar feedback that pops up in the mix for a second right after a scream. Hard to explain but not any other version has this. It would be about at the 7:15 mark on the latest. Anyone know what the heck I'm talking about? "

^ because that guitar feedback was inserted by T. in the 30 second sample he posted to AMP, it was his way of tagging it as his. The new full length/quality source we just got dosen't have it because it was not really there, originally.

I put that 30 sec sample on The Work as a hidden track and added reverb to the end to allow for a fade out.

*Here he posts a link to what he's talking about*

Just listening now to all the various Computer Blue tracks....the first version recorded live at the Warehouse #1 is imo a bit worse then The Work EE, or 30 Years Of Funk, or the original fan CDR that spawned the other fan tweakings.

For The Work EE. I use the 128kbps mp3 that T. uploaded to AMP...because it was the best sounding. The copy we just got seems swirly, deffo mp3 compression.

I mean....if you have a 128kbps mp3...convert it to .wav and then make another mp3 from that .wav, well....its just getting worse and worse.

This sounds like an mp3 of an mp3 to me....that's the problem with the internet and files, fan tweaking....as it changes hands and gets altered it most often just gets worse and worse.

You gotta consider source integrity, which is why I still have all 39 master CDR of The Work EE....source integrity, I know where each and every track came from.

Back then....I had all the original pressed outtake boots, anything I didn't have I got from my trusted sources, guys I know had the originals, when it came to fan CDR releases I got them from the original guys who made them.

Anything that was internet based, NPGMC, mp3.....I got all the original sources.
10-15 years on files have been copied, altered, tweaked, butchered, compressed and uncompressed to the point fans don't have a CLUE what they are getting anymore!

This new leak is great and all, appreciated, clearly someone close to T. leaked these....probably time, not caring anymore about promises or collector BS.
But it is uber annoying that most are bloody excerpts and samples...deliberate fades and what not.

It was one of the reasons i quit Prince and the fandom, too much BS and politics. I son'r think Prince has released anything decent officially in 15 years....i don' even listen to his albums.

I wonder why the sample of Prince's version of A Million Miles (I Love You) has not surfaced?....its the last sample not to appear in proper quality. I still want Heaven and a better copy of the '87 version of Wouldn't You Love To Love Me.

I got two sides... and they're both friends.

Thanks for posting that dandan.

Interesting to see even those who have more "encyclopaedic" knowledge of what has come before, find it difficult to keep track of which songs are from which source, which have been altered/edited again, and which have been improved or worsened - quality or compression wise.

As I was putting these into iTunes last night I kept on thinking "I've got this somewhere else, I wonder if it's really better, is my other version cleaner". Could drive a person mad lol

Yes T is a recurring and well-known pseudonym in the bootleg/unreleased recording world. He(?)'s been mentioned for years as one of the primary(?)/secondary(?) sources for some of the best known leaked tracks.
