I believe it was in April of '98, Carolina Coliseum, Columbia SC.

As soon as he started playing the opening guitar riff I thought, "Is this really happening?" He intentionally played it like the album version.

[Edited 12/18/14 7:06am]

It was 11/4/97 at the Carolina Coliseum. He DID NOT PLAY the opening guitar riff. It was played over backing tapes. He did sing it quite well though. The band was playing, but the nuts and bolts of the song was MEMOREX. I can't promise, but he did likely say "This is not Memorex," in reference to the old tape commercial.

On a side note, the thing that made the drive from Tallahassee worth it to me, was a stunning but short performance of "A Case of You." It was more so like the 1983 First Avenue performance than the version he would be performing on the 2002 tour.

I will say that the Columbia show was one of the better shows of one of his weaker tours....

But to suggest that When Doves Cry was a total live performance would just not be true. Backing tapes were heavily used on that tour.

If Prince EVER did this whole reunion thingy, he would HAVE to start with the opening riff of "When Doves Cry" and completely perform the song.

But, we all have our wishful thinking lol

Just suits 'n' ties for the get-ups, aswell. Black suit. White shirt. Purple tie. No hats.

Prost!

I saw the Police reunion show at Dodger Stadium. I had prejudged it to be weak and to my suprise, it was great! I would have been the first one to tell everybody that it sucked but it didn't. Foo Fighters opened and while they played faster, the Police seemed to match their intensity. The arrangements of the old songs were fresh and complex, much more layered than on the albums. Time had only seemed to strenghten their talents. Not sure why the people on this thread didn't like these shows. Maybe expectations were too high. While I don't think it will happen, seeing Prince and the Rev do a reunion tour might be a bit like looking at a cloud; we all will see different things. I for one wouldn't have any expetations other than hoping for a good/great show, musically at least.

Well pardon my memory. I actually thought it was all live because it sounded like it -- including the opening riff. Geez.

I'm not against it, just saying it wouldn't be as spectacular and earth-shattering as some folks here want to make us believe. And if it were to happen, it would probably be a one off-thing: one show in First Avenue, maybe one or two in New York and then everybody would go their seperate ways again.

I'm not "against" it, either. And I agree with SuperSoulFighter and others who have said that they just feel it wouldn't be this incredible thing that some are imagining it would be. It WOULD be amazing to see Prince with the Revolution again, but (imo) still, there wouldn't be that intangible ingredient to it that made the music and that era so magical (sorry to keep using that word but I feel like it describes the PR era and tour so perfectly). And I never said I wouldn't buy tickets to it if it did happen! lol But I wouldn't go with any expectation of hearing or feeling the music and the 'experience' of that band playing those songs in the way I did 30 years ago. If this reunion DID happen, I think a one-off only performance at First Ave would be the best way to do it, not a tour.

I just don't get why some of y'all are trying to act like The Revolution was just some mediocre house band that lucked up and happened to play on Purple Rain? Most of the members where there, jamming with him and for him while he was dry humping stages and thangs as only he could, long before Purple Rain. It was them being who they were that afforded him so many opportunities to be who he was and do the things he did. Could he have done that with any band? Perhaps but all I know to be true is he didn't it with any band. He did it with THEM and damn well for years. Nothing negates that. Hell, it really should be celebrated with a release of all live performance footage in good quality from back then to show those that obviously really don't know nor understand that Prince had one of the tightest bands in all the land, in The Revolution and they were the end of that era. A reunion of any kind with them would be the personification of "Real music by real musicians!" And a true joy to witness.
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

But didn't you guys see The Revolution reunion at First Av a couple of years ago? Didn't you notice that it wasn't any good?

[Edited 12/20/14 4:14am]

Are you being ironic or are you serious? What makes you think it wasn´t any good?

The Revolution can still play. The singing at that concert was not anywhere close to Prince. Bobby Z probably can't withstand a whole tour, maybe bring him out for Purple Rain, and have Blackwell or Sheila E play on most songs. Hell, bring out the SOTT band for the tour...mix it up. But that's never gonna happen, just like the Revolution...it's over. We'll get a Tony M & Shelby shouting match before we'll get a real reunion. And please note...Shelby is a great singer, it's Prince that has her shouting "Put Your Hands Up" at the top of her lungs like a lunatic all night. Real Music By Real Musicians? Nope, Real Annoying Shouting by a Real Singer not singing.

The Revolution was the best. A reunion would be the best. The end.

Let's face it. It would be the biggest tour in the history of man,

In what parallel universe are you living?

Is the org a device that connects your and my universe?

.

Over here mr P is not relevant except for his (bi-)yearly tours where he plays some of his older hits; his new stuff makes most people get some beers.

His new records do not sell well. His old stuff is not released in remasterd form. His plans are extremely vague

.

Mr. P does not live in the past. That was what he has shown us the past few decades. He does not go back to do something again.

.

If he breaks this rule then only the money can be his motivator as his ties with the other band members were not so tight for years and years.

Prince used to always reference may u live to see the Dawn i think he should really do this reunion show perform the Purple Rain Hits ect then kick the second part of the show into high gear promoting Art Official Age and current music like the Lovesexy show was first part was fan favorites then he kinda did songs he wanted the stage theatrics were higher,bigger..ex...anestasia and rising to the top of the areana the car the stage elevated and all sorts of things that added to the excitement of the performances...he could open with 3rdeyegirl rest up let The Time perform..then come tear the stage up with the Revolution...Purple Rain songs and NPG 2nd half Bring "THE DAWN" promoting all 3 albums in one show...what a dream lol
