That's because it sounds exactly like Jhene Aiko's sister Milan J's song:

Yeah I don't understand why people still bother to peddle that absurd myth.

that's their claim.... but for what it's worth, truth or not, the music had a different vibe to it that was absent before and after.

I used to purchase Prince albums so I could avoid songs like this. Sorry.

.

I get that he doesn't want to relive the past and wants to try new things. But what happened to having some level of discernment regarding what's an experiment and what's album material?

.

I also agree with the previous posts regarding tempo of the album. So far it's a slow- to mid-tempo fest. A lot of mid-tempo beats with rushed lyrics to fill every hole. What used to be a craft of songwriting is now muddied by spoken interludes, samples and....autotune?!? This is a proven musician who stops mid-concert to preach about real music by real musicians, and a song like this makes the cut for his first album in four years?

.

Even worse to me is the PR behind this album, pushing it as "classic Prince." There is nothing "classic Prince" about this song. In fact, songs like this don't appeal to most people who know what "classic Prince" sounds like. This is for a different audience altogether. This is Prince working with a co-producer to sound contemporary and relevant, not to carve out a sound that's his.

.

I'm sure there are plenty of devoted fans out there who will eat this up. For me, it's a skip. This song is enough for me to say that the pendulum has swung to being more excited for Plectrum Electrum.

True fact.

I think different is good.

Sounding different by trying different things.

ATWIAD sounded v. different in comparion to PR, Parade to ATWIAD, SOTT to Parade, etc. etc. etc.

Keeping mixing things up makes stuff new and new is interesting.

I'm not a huge fan of the recent RnB Prince sound - but I've had this track on repeat for the last 30 minutes and will likely keep it so...

The music sounds artificial for sure, (did he do that on purpose - WARNER BROS!!!!). I tried to listen to the words, but he was rappin, so I automatically tuned out. Decided to give it a second listen could only make out something about breasts and feeding him biggrin U know I could hook a brother up on that tip!!! lol

This song is just balls. Sweaty, sticky, swampy, shitty balls. AOA is shaping up to be the worst Prince album. Worse than NPS. At least he had the decency to try to pretend he didn't lay the NPS turd. Is it too late to credit AOA to the NPG? I don't think the problem is people expecting Prince to be innovative. He hasn't been innovative since Lovesexy , but he's had plenty of great songs since then. The problem is Prince should create music that isn't fucking godawful. I never thought Mr. Goodnight would sound good. I guess the bar can always get lower. I wish he could release this album in a newspaper just like 20ten. It belongs in a newspaper...so people can roll it up and toss it out like the steaming dog poo it is.

I don't know why people say that. Let's take the symbol album as an example - can you tell me which other artists have had stuff like "Love 2 The 9s", "The Continental" or "7" on their albums? They sound pretty damn unique to me. Sure, he had rappers appear on his music in the 1990s and stuff like that, but it's hardly like the title track on "Purple Rain" was the first power ballad ever either.

I don't think his innovativeness came to a halt until the "Musicology" album and by that point it was mostly a good thing, as most of his attempts to change his sound had not really worked that well.

as we all know Prince likes to do things he's never done before. Sampling another artist's instrumental is a first for him unless i'm mistaken. He was probably tempted to do it once after 30 years of creating original music

I gotta say, that after listening to 'The Breakdown', 'Clouds', and 'U Know', one after the other, they do go together very well. I'm not particularly fond of 'Breakfast Can Wait', but this album could end up being a surprising package, depending on the remainder of cuts...

What does "classic Prince" sound like exactly?

In that run of albums from Dirty Mind to Lovesexy that most people might consider "classic Prince", not one sounded anything like the others - which is what made it "classic Prince".

This doesn't sound that much like anything he's done before, which, by definition is "classic Prince".

You might not like it - as many who liked PR didnt like ATWIAD - but that's just a question of taste, not of the artifical construct you have created of what you think Prince should sound like.

I just watched Mila's inverview on the Breakfast Club. She said she was in Prince's Diamonds and Pearls video and that growing up Prince's songs were always played in her home. Seems to be a reason behind the sampling.
