prince did not write most of the songs .. he played on some .. such as stand back .. co wrote others .. such as do me baby and jungle love .. nothing compares to you was never a hit until sinead reinterpreted it .. great song but often the songwriting itself is not enough to make it a great piece of music .. prince is on par with the best out there .. or WAS on par with the best .. not anymore .. these days he writes the WORST music .. i wouldn't come near it if not for his back catalog and my curiosity .. it is a complete fail that overshadows his golden era .. dylan cohen all wrote late era great songs .. hell even tom petty still churns out great music .. prince cant hang for longevity and without all the help he got may never have come up with great music in the first place .. soft and wet, controversy, do me baby, dirty mind, kiss, scandelous, many many of his best tunes had help .. a lot of help .. the stuff he writes now puts into question how much he flat out stole from friends and bandmates while giving himself all the credit .. his new songs are pathetic

we have a list which he didnt write? since u say he didnt write most of them.

soft and wet or scandalous cant really be considered his best work as u claim.

sandalous is such a princely song which has all the prince vibe all over it.

so he didnt write nothing compares to u?

who wrote do me baby? andre doesnt claim he wrote that song if u saw his recent recording

He's currently at #3 - I'm sorry but that is way too high looking at that list. They really shouldn't let rabid fans vote on these things.

Shame on a Prince fan for wanting to see Prince get some recognition as a songwriter???

This ain't a political election...It ain't that serious...This place has become so fucking joyless...Damn shame...

I know, right? Sometimes it's as if this place isn't.... you know... a forum for Prince fans. lol

As for juicing anything, Prince himself tweeted the link, too. So maybe we should all go and say "shame on him" too. FFS.....

It'd b great of we could get Stevie to do it.

Prince is a better songwriter than them both? Are you kidding me? Obviously you don’t listen to their music? And you judge Prince as the best song writer? [Flame Removed - Militant]

Militant said:

Prince is a million times a better songwriter than either Lennon or McCartney. Hell, there's two of them. And they still don't have the pure songwriting range than Prince does. He's written fantastic songs in the styles of rock, pop, soul, funk, hip-hop, jazz, new age, electro, rockabilly, new wave, reggae, latin jazz/funk, country.......

Hmm but who has the right to vote then? I am willing to bet there is no one who has actually listened to sufficient amount of the catalogue of each musician listed, who is "able" to analyze the importance of each musician's songwriting ability....it's a bit much, for me that is lol. People who are saying Prince doesn't deserve to be #1 are just as biased in their own ways I think. For me, as a Non-Western person I'm not surprised to see most of the artists are Western musicians, but it's okay.

Dear nay-sayers! I saw some people got Nobel Peace Prize who certainy in my opinion don't deserve them-that I may get irritated with...but Prince being recognized as one of the best songwriter on RANKER.COM? Ranker.com guys, a website you probably have never even heard of till today....Come on, isn't it...ok...?

In conclusion I voted for Prince. If 3rdeyegirl tweeted about it I guess they kind of care. For a feel-good present for Prince...why not lol?

Flaming is against the rules of the site. Learn to make your point without insults.

And yes, in my opinion Prince is better than both. As for not knowing what I'm talking about, unluckily for you I'm a professional songwriter signed to a major label. So I think I'm perfectly qualified to "judge" here. You're entitled to disagree with my opinion, and anyone else's, of course. But you're not entitled to flame another user simply because you don't agree with their opinion. This is a formal warning.

Sorry man - Prince LYRICS kill his cred imo on many occasions - not always, but frequently enough. Nice tunes, but all kinds of awkward lyrics if you are simply judging songwriting. As FINISHED pieces I like a lot of songs that might not be great writing. Lennon and McCartney - heck either one alone has far deeper skills than Prince lyrically in the big picture. McCartney - at 71 - dropped a great album this year. GREAT. I cannot say that for anything Prince has written in some time. Ok, decent, very good. Sure. But not great.
Being a songwriter gives you no more cedibility when it comes to an opinion than anyone else. That means you have a skillset, but your opinion is just that.

Prince is a great sng writer but his biggest problem has always been quality control. The problem is he is surrounded by his band who can't be subjective and critical of his work and be just be yes men.

This was quite different in the early 80s when the relationship with his band was quite different and they provided him with a real feedback and his best work

Why is everyone thinking soley about lyrics? Songwriting includes both music and lyrics, not one or the other. Take away Dylan's lyrics and his music is utterly bland shit. However, take away Stevie Wonder's or Prince's lyrics and their songs are still killer.

However, personally I believe Lennon/McCartney deserve the top spot. Their genius and influence borders on incomprehensible. The Beatles ARE the greatest band of all time (this is fact, I dont care what anyone says)

I got two sides... and they're both friends.
