I think it's beautiful how this community of people worked together and accomplished something! We got him from 26 all the way to 2! Congrats to the human race for learning to cooperate and work as a team! Or is that just us kind, loving, beautiful Prince fans? Lol.

I ain't gonna vote for Prince! Although I love him dearly I just don't consider him the greatest songwriter of all times, he wrote too many clunkers and has watered down his songwriting legacy that way. I believe Stevie Wonder would be more deserving of this title.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Yes, and I stand by it. The musicianship is tighter, the groove is harder, and the vocal performance is better. MJ slayed it. Just like Jimi made "Watchtower" better.

I agree. Between here, Twitter and Facebook, the Prince fan community is stronger than ever. It's a beautiful thing.

This list is bullshit even with Prince being number one. You tell me that Prince is better than Bob Dylan lyrically? Can Prince write something like "Like a Rolling Stone" or "Hurricane"? We all know, critics know, everybody knows that nobody, literally nobody ever in the history of recorded music can top Bob Dylan in terms of lyrics, and after Bob Dylan there's Bruce, Lennon-McCartney and Joni Mitchell as contenders, Prince's songs sometimes are even so cheesy and stuff, even Bob Dylan at his worst can write a better song than Prince at his absolute motherfucking best. if I should vote for my favorite songwriter I'd probably go with Prince since I'm a big fan of his, but if we're arguing about The Greatest Songwriter of All Time then that's fucking Bob Dylan and I know, Rolling Stone knows, PASTE knows, goddamn history knows that for a fucking fact.

Def yeah! Agree!! Stevie Wonder, Lennon-McCartney, Bruce Springsteen are all better songwriters than Prince.

It's just, we don't discuss opinions here, we discuss them if it's a matter of our favorite songwriter, but the best??? You can't deny the facts, if you say Prince is the G Songwriter of all time then it's like you're saying Blade Runner or Amadeus is the best film of all time when it's nothing compared to Citizen Kane, or 2001: a Space Odyssey for example..

Bob Dylan's songwriting defined a whole culture, it was the soundtrack of the 60's revolution, without Bob, Lennon and McCartney would never got the inspiration to write albums like Sgt Pepper or Revolver, if it wasn't for Bob Dylan there would be no Springsteen or even no Prince. He made the songs a whole other way to discuss politics, love, regret and other many subjects, you give me one songwriter before Bob Dylan that went into these subjects in such a subtle, astonishing way Bob Dylan dealt with while writing his songs....

Prince is good, he can crack top ten if we take into account his work in Sign of The Times or Parade.

Songwriting = music AND lyrics.

You can perhaps argue that Dylan is a better lyricist. I don't agree, because I don't think he has the range. But musically, no fucking way. He does one genre well. Prince does at least half a dozen to a VERY high standard. That's why he's #1. Hip-Hop fans don't fuck with Dylan. Funk fans don't fuck with Dylan. Soul fans don't fuck with Dylan. Those genres have just as much validity in their songwriting as folk.

And personally, when it comes to folk, I'd take Joni over Bob any day of the week. In fact, let's hear from the great woman herself on the subject:

Mitchell added, "Musically he's not very gifted. He's borrowed his voice from old hillbillies. He's got a lot of borrowed things. He's not a great guitar player. He's invented a character to deliver his songs."

upped:

Prince is good at #1 (but more as performer/artist, then as songwriter. Better too have aa different list, but still nice to see him in a #1 spot somewhere smile)

Brian Wilson (should be 2nd)

Paul/John (good at 3)

Stevie wonder & Paul Simon (they both are too low (should be 4 & 5 as far as i'm concerned)

Number 6 is indeed completely missing from the list and it's Neil Diamond, realy shame he is not in the list!

The rest.....is all equeal to me.

Yeah...subjectivity is often the case for debate on these lists but it seems any necessary objectivity is out the window as well.

Though, maybe the generational shift and what what people want out of their songwriters is more than shifting.

At least Elvis and MJ aren't on it. That's encouraging.

I completely agree, he has written some songs that are absolutely up there with the best, but so many 'songs' that are plain rubbish too...

i admire stevie wonder greatly but how many great songs has he written in the last 30 years ?...he had his great run of albums in the 70s the same as prince did in the 80s...i would say prince is the better songwriter because he has a little bit more variety than stevie did...every artist has their golden period but for some reason prince is attacked more because he isnt writing when doves crys anymore..?...when was the last time stevie wrote a superstition calibre song..?

Exactly. Oh - I just thought of another British great: Richard Thompson. You wanna talk brilliant lyrics? Listen to Richard and be amazed.
