Quantizing? Back in the late 70's? That would have taken a LOT of cut & splice back then. Would have lost the effect that way. Am I right, thebanishedone?

Yes you are Ruby smile

Remember '777-9311' by The Time? Prince played all the instruments on that, including the killer drums. It's pretty hard to top that song, drumwise. Prince was kicking ass on that and that's 30 plus years ago!!!!!!!

So, what do you mean 'Prince upgraded on every instrument except drums'?

He's been the best musician since jumpstreet!!!

its common knowledge that this song was a drum machine. I've been using drum machines for a while, and alot of drum programming on my computer. I can easily hear that it's Linn. It's quite possible he did leave some of it without the strict quantising to give it a little more live feel. But for the most part it's quantized drum programming with a Linn.

Not true. John Blackwell said in an online Prince fan chat that it's a Linn drum beat. Source: http://www.thedawnexperie...php?t=1136

"JOHN: 777-9311. That beat is still a challenge for drummers of ALL levels. That was a Linndrum beat that Morris and Prince used. When that came out, a lot of drummers thought it was Jellybean. I had to take a lot of time to study each lick just to get close to meeting that challenge. Another was Dorothy Parker."

It is strange that you didn't know it's a linn drum.it dont sound like real drums at all.i think that bass and drum pattern are programed vy Prince but im 99% sure that crazy hi hat was programed by Morris Day.Listen to Mechanical Emotion.hi hat sounds close to 777 9311.thats Morris Day style

Careful. Don't make statements you can't back up smile

Prince certainly wrote the song and programmed, played the instruments, arranged it etc.

There's a comment on the youtube video of John Blackwell drumming this beat claiming that the beat is based on a sample of David Garibaldi / Tower of Power. I have no idea if that is true. Always worth listening to funky Garibaldi though.

Prince is a brilliant little groove drummer but shit at rock drumming. He just doesn't have the punch and is clunky.

STFU with your silly roll eyes, Dave Grohl is a way better rock drummer, guitar not so much, Prince is an excellent rhythm player and Dave doesn't solo.

No one will deny dave grohl is an awesome drummer, yes.
But funky he ain't.

prince technically probably isn't an amazing drummer but his unique sense of groove and timing and overall funkiness is what makes his drumming so enjoyable to watch/listen to. The dude just oozes the funk...

I think Bambi, I'm Yours, Da bang, Why You Want to Treat me so Bad, Million Days, etc can be considered Rock drumming but can Dave Grohl bring the funk or jazz (ala Madhouse) don't get it twisted of who is the real genius here
