Pretty much this. For once I agree with Nouveau Dance. He's right. Once Prince figures out he can't control it, the money stream dries up or people have figured out a way to capture shows and spread them around, he'll shit on the distribution model for sure.

Hey, Prince, record the rehearsals and shows, put them on ThirdEyeGirl website for purchase and see if you don't make some money from your dwindling, hardcore fan base (which has only dwindled and is less hard core because you act silly when fans want to hear your music, post websites to talk about it and want to see you play live but can't make your over priced, last minute shows).

I know he does this shit on purpose (3am, no schedule, fucking with fans, etc.) to maintain his mystique element, sense of control and to avoid over-exposure but me and a lot of people are getting too old to do the work necessary to "go through the proper channels", such as they are.

Looking forward to seeing these streams once they hit the usual places I tend to find them.

I agree with every word. That's the one thing that I don't like about Prince anymore, the game playing with fans, those he does interviews with, etc. Everyone has outgrown this, and Prince should have outgrown it by now also. It was "cute" when he and his fans were in their 20's, but neither Prince nor his hardcore fans are in their 20's anymore, and it has gotten old, and is no longer cute. No one has the time or patience for the game playing that Prince still does, and trying to still maintain a certain air of "mystique" is played out. Like you said, fans just want to hear Prince's music. Enough with all the BS. Prince is 55.....it's time to grow up.

Also "HouseQuake" was an album cut radio/club hit in LA, played daily on black radio here back then. It was a mainstay in the clubs here in LA. Especially with the 12inch maxi single was release.

I looked into the matter at Livestream and apparently it isn't set-up yet for Android.

interesting to know that housequake did get some love in the club back in the day. it's actually the first song that got me into prince. it was summer camp and some kids were going around singing "who in the house know about the quake? we do! i'm really, really".

That is a cool story!! Plus a cool song 2 bring U in2 the purple kingdom... giggle

I think Janelle reminds him a little how he used to be as an artist when he was younger: black talented artist that doesn't play the typical black music and who is not afraid to take risks..musically, visually etc plus the energetic live performances..

Prince pulling rank on BET execs like an O.G. and demanded that Janelle Monae performed on the show.

Good for Prince for making that call, but I am shocked that B.E.T wasn't already planning to have Janelle on the awards show. She's a great live performer (unlike some of the other people they had on) and Q.U.E.E.N. is a killer song. Why in the world would they have left her out? Of course, Prince may have slightly over-stated his role in this. Who knows?

No reason for Prince to overstate his role - his status among the music industry "in the know" folk is enough.

I grew up in a place and at a time when people actually had manners, home training and reading skills.

So maybe you can tell me in a nice, calm, non hysterical way how saying that ONE song not being a hit in some black communities translates into saying that P gets no love in those communities?

The entire topic has gone in the direction "that P does not have pull or love in the black community". Maybe you should go back and read some of the other comments. In addtion, you are agreeing about the comments about this one song which are not true. Nothing hysterical about stating that something is B.S. when it is it. I refrained from spelling out the word out since your eyeballs are going to fall out from seeing a profanity. Grow up and stop beating someone else down because something is a little to real for you.

So you believe that this discussion is so crucial that it warrants hurling profanities and you say I should grow up? lol If you're that upset about those other comments then maybe you should have quoted those "other" people.

Where has the entire topic gone in the direction that P has no pull in the black community? The entire topic? Really? Because all I saw is someone mention that HQ was not a black hit and the person went on to state at "least where I live" and I agreed that it wasn't a hit where I lived either.

Furthermore, you can look it up yourself but as far a I know, of the singles that charted from SOTT, Housequake was not one of them, so if you think that is a truth worth cussing about, then knock yourself out. shrug

babynoz,
Thanks for keeping this is a somewhat reasonable conversation. Definitely agree with you that commenting on one song doesn't mean somebody is saying prince has no pull and love in the black community. Everywhere I've lived in the U.S. lots of black folks love Prince's music. There is no doubt about that. It's to the level that among many black folks you have to apologize for not liking Prince.

purple1968,
I appreciate your passion, and I agree that the thread got slight derailed. But your level of over reaction and hyperbole was really off the chart. Please get a grip. Show me where we said Prince doesn't have pull or love in the black community. And you almost had me with Housequake hitting # 11 on the billboard black chart. I was about to thank you for educating me, until I looked it up and saw that U Got the Look hit # 11. Housequake was along for the ride as the b-side. But keep the passion/craziness/love/anger coming. You help make it entertaining around here.

And about the article/interview ... glad to see that Prince believes the Internet is alive again. It means we get more music, which is what most of us want.

I grew up in DC and listened to black radio stations. I seem to recall "Adore" being huge, but not Housequake that much. I could be wrong though, since I'm white. I guess it doesn't matter.

Did he win a grammy for that "Adore"? I think that song is a million times better than "Call My Name" or "Future Baby Mama".

Adore was not released as a single but RnB station played it and I still think if it had been

released as a signal it would have sold a million copies easy. I remember Housequake getting airplay and it was sent out to RnB stations to play as U Got The Look was promoted to PoP stations. I worked in a record store at the time and use to check out Billboard every week when the mag came to the store.

Also "U got the look" was for pop radio(which took the mega hit single all the way to #2 on the billboard hot 100). "Housequake" was 4 black radio. Which Eye actually thought was a brilliant idea!

Even though I wish it would have been released as a lead single on its own. But Prince was always known 2 have big album cuts from his albums, that weren't released officially as singles for black radio. He was still considered funky in the black community & "Housequake" proved it.
