Prince plays 3-hour show at his first SXSW appearance Samsung Galaxy culminated their SXSW presence with an exclusive concert featuring Prince and A Tribe Called Quest. Fans lined up hours in advance to catch Prince's first-ever SXSW appearance. Notable attendees included Nick Cannon, Solange Knowles, Dennis Quaid, Jesse Williams, Talib Kweli, Jim James, Mayer Hawthorne, Isaiah Washington and more.
Prince took the stage accompanied by a 22-piece brass band that paraded through the crowd to the stage and played for over three hours. His set included multiple costume changes and a soulful rendition of "Purple Rain" with the lights low. The legend brought down the house in front of a 40' x 12' foot LED screen, the largest in SXSW history, while singing classics like "1999," and a cover of Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough." This show was the final incentive for Samsung Galaxy owners who unlocked all 11 rewards in Samsung's TecTile program which featured offers from local businesses throughout Austin for NFC-enabled Samsung Galaxy owners. In addition, the Samsung Galaxy Experience was a hotspot throughout the festival, showcasing the latest Samsung Galaxy products and their features through interactive experiences. Samsung showed their customer appreciation in other ways throughout SXSW including free battery swaps for Galaxy owners who were running low on power. Owners could simply tweet #PowerOn to @SamsungMobileUS for a delivery of a brand new fully charged battery via a bike messenger.

He didn't play guitar, so why bother? All you others say Hell Yea!!

You're kidding right? Prince plays so many instruments and one of his finest instruments is his vocals, his voice goes as many places that his guitar does

I was there. Great show... but I kept waiting for him to pick up his guitar and he never did! I love seeing him play it up close.
The highlight for me was "Something in the Water" with Cassandra on keys. Simply beautiful.
Special bonus.. giving a high-five to Hannah as she walked through the crowd and got on stage.

Didn't you hear what he said to Jester? He didn't need to play guitar, the band were on point.

I thought he 'retired' 1999? http://www.goldiesparade.co.uk/ - Prince discography, tour history, news and more.

Encouraging to see that he had a full band and was not out there with just him and the three girls as they are fine but it really limits what he can do with no keyboard, etc. Also, how do you really play Purple Rain without doing the guitar solo? I remember he did a bit of it on the One Night Alone show I saw but it was just a bit of it on piano and it was more of a tease for the casual fan to hear something they knew but yea, how did PR come across without a guitar solo?

This was just like "this will be the last time I play the hits" comment during the 2004 Musicology tour. Take it with a 50lb grain of salt! I was glad to see him resurrect 1999 as it is a good song live and most certainly one that when played really gets an arena crowd pumped up.

Haha, He was smiling as hard as ever when he said that. Indeed he was true when he said that! The band really put on a show! HE WAS IN COMPLETE CONTROL! Like seeing James Brown orchestrating everything! HE WAS THE BAND! I never remember dancing so hard! Everything was just amazing, and he brought on show that I'll always remember! The energy in the room, he danced his life AWAY! Every moment of the concert had every sense of fun involved! As Q-Tip Says..."So many variations of the conscious of FUN"
That show was kicking, So many wonderful moments! Hearing everyone scream "WE WANT PRINCE" he kept coming back until he threw the mic in the crowd and ran out of there! LOL..Where does he get all of that energy, I have no idea? lol
He wanted to perform 3 more hours, but Austin Police would not allow it. They have these silly curfew hours!
IF ONLY HE COULD! AHH! It was amazing, and could not be a better show!
WELL OF COURSE..IF HE PLAYED MORE! LOL It's Button Therapy, Baby!

STILL IT WAS AWESOME. His vocals was the 'Guitar Solo' if you look at it like that. He completely revamped it. He made the breakdown where his vocals just carried the solo! It's Button Therapy, Baby!

Wow. "Purple Rain" and "1999". How edgy.

I agree its not an exciting setlist but it fits the format for a corporate sponsered event. I've seen one of these and their usually by the numbers. For 1st timers I'm sure it was all that. It sounds like he rearranged alot which made the set sound fresh & new. What little I heard & saw looked really good. [Edited 3/19/13 12:39pm] [Edited 3/19/13 12:40pm]

That is so good to hear, and I am so glad you had such a time. I know Prince can run it without playing guitar... he did a lot of that during the 'Parade' era.
In Prince's words, "Welcome 2 The Dawn"... Prince is ageless in both talent and energy.

I have no desire to see him live either if he does not play guitar. Hell, he didnt even play his own music either so thats two strikes to me. I think I have seen my last Prince show. He is just not appealing to see anymore to go see live. I would rather just get the bootleg and let you guys go to a cover artist that doesnt play guitar anymore.

Eye actually enjoy his keyboard playing better than his guitar playing, which he gave a smoking jazzy keyboard solo...His keyboard sound is the core of what created the Minneapolis sound... is very under rated as a keyboard player....
No matter what songs he per4rms his charisma is what actually carries any show does...
As Jester said after he was christened . told him he didn't have to play the guitar after his James Brown orchestration directed newly formed 12-piece brass latest incarnation of the NPG band.... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

Sounds like you had an amazing time, Jester. I'm glad you got to go. Plus you got to see Tribe Called Quest, who I also love (I saw Q-Tip tear it up at a hip hop festival in Brooklyn about a year ago.)

He needs to make a video of one of these performances, that would be cool. Prince doesnt need to play guitar to have a great show.

Yep. That was established during the Parade tour. He didn't play a lot of guitar then, but I've seen some great performances from those shows.

I can't remember him ever going back to past era for an outfit. But... I don't follow his every step around the planet either. Yep, I said it. Much respect 2u Jester. I'm also glad u got 2 see the man live. Now you just need to tell them to bring 3rd Eye Girl Down Under to Oz... "I have a date with Lisa. Isn't that wonderful?"

I wish I get to see him live again soon. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

I'm not surpised. Prince usually includes at least some of his popular '80s hits on tour.
I think the last time he refused to play most of his popular hits on tour was during the Rainbow Children era on the One Nite Alone tour in 2002 (even then he played his popular hits "Raspberry Beret," "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Take Me With U").
Before that during the Gold Experience era on the Ultimate Live Experience European tour in 1995 (he still played two popular hits "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" and "7").
And the Glam Slam club tour in Minneapolis, LA and Miami, etc. in 1994 (he played his hit "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World").
