Finally just started listening, it's been a busy few days...

My reviews will be split up over several posts and probably several days as I have a life and this is about 10 hours of tunes. wink

Right off the bat I have a question. Has anybody compared the material from V2D1 that's also on the Dakota Two release from a week or so back? Are they the same source? Does anybody have an opinion that one is better than the other?

So far, just a couple tracks in, this doesn't sound as bad as was suggested or as I expected after hearing the Always In My Hair sample the other day. Of course, it's easier for an audience recording of a Jazz set to sound better than one from a Rock set, so, we'll see how it goes...

wink

Edit: A quick comparison of the funky section of Muse 2 The Pharaoh suggests to me that these definitely are NOT the same source.

^ Different sources.

Dakota II is more complete than what's on the Eye release.

Also a much better version of Dakota V is in the works, from a better source.

I'm quite disappointed with the quality of the Eye-release, some of the teasers sounded very promising, but they are certainly not an indication of the overall quality.

Busy doin' something close to nothing

I agree the jazz set sounds better. Like I said the Eye release varies from track to track. Sound gets muffled occasionally.

The Dakota 2 release is a different source. I can't decide which sounds better. They're about the same level of quality just different sounding.

The Eye release is a little more full sounding (on the good tracks) and has a warmer sound. The Dakota 2 is more consistent with less drop offs but has a brighter and slightly tinny sound in comparison.

Both are good enough to enjoy the shows. I buy em too if they were ever made official.

Prince could steal this version, press it, and sell it, even being an audience recording. And I'd probably pay. That's how good this is!

can anybody identify for me the personnel on the dakota v recording, or provide a link that might? or for the band line-ups for each of the shows, for that matter...thanks in advance.

and, just a suggestion for reverend (if you happen upon this), that would be nice info to have on the artwork, beautiful as it is already.

sweet package all around (dakota v). best boot i've heard for a little while now.

btw, who are these people in the audience that don't recognize these fairly rare performances when they start and don't lose their shit when they hear Endorphinmachine, Elephants & Flowers, etc., starting?

they don't deserve to be at this show.

All right, got through Eye's Dakota Diaries Vol. 1. In my not-so-humble opinion:

- Who the hell thought it was a good idea to make volume one the three early shows and volume two the three the three late shows? Stupid. It would be much better to just have the shows in order. First early show, 1st late show, 2nd early show, 2nd late show, etc... That's how I would rather listen to them.

- The first 2 discs don't sound too bad, especially the instrumental tracks. They don't sound great, but not bad. On CD1, I really only dug the first Instrumental Jam / Brown Skin. Don't need to hear the rest again. On CD2, Satisfied & Housequake were really good, Something In The Water was fantastic, and Let's Work was pretty cool too. The rest? Meh.

- The third night on disc 3 and 4 (the same material that is on Dakota V), sounds like crap on the Eye set. Unlistenable for the most part. Painful even. So bad I had to skip through most of it. Just. Bad.

- The "Bonus Tracks"... Okay, I get it when bootlegs include official tracks that are unavailable to purchase legally, I really do. Sometimes it's something so rare I missed it and I'm glad the bootleggers fill the void. But this... Including new tracks that are currently available to purchase from the artist is simply bullshit! Fuck. You. Eye. Records. Really, FUCK YOU! And that also goes to any "fans" that participate and work with Eye in any way. You suck and I hope you can't sell a lousy 100 copies of this boot. Hopefully, all the completists out there (like me) know how to use a search engine to find a free copy of your "work". It's already available in several of the regular places.

- Dakota Diaries Volume Two will have to wait, cuz, I'm listening to Dakota V now. MUCH better. The heavy rocking songs still don't sound great to me, they're just playing too loud through a lot of it for an audience recording to sound great. I would love for this show to come out in soundboard. I'd buy it from 3rdeyegirl.com in a heartbeat.

Had to skip ahead to Elephants And Flowers... That's. What. I'm. Talking. About. Fantastic!

I agree. Bollocks to Eye, I don't agree with making money out of it anyway. I'm getting lost in all the different versions and still there's more to come. smile

Best thing for me is what and how he's playing. Sounds good to me for the most part.

Isn't it great? So far it seems that: Confusion>Akashic>Eye

Funny how many people managed to record these shows despite efforts to prevent it.

Some of the stuff on this Dakota V release sounds terrific! None of it sounds bad...

S'funny, I've got it on now. I love the tune anyway but this one sorta drifts off half way through. None better than the 13-9-07 for me, maybe cos I was there and I'm biased?

Be hard pushed to ruin a tune like that though. Beautiful. Strange. Nice bit o keys on this one.

I think it's hilarious that Confusion held back, waiting for Eye to have to release their inferior quality. Eye would have just downloaded Dakota V, pressed it, and sold it, all while claiming it was their own source. We all know this is true... wink

Well yeah, but I meant it shits on 3Eyes, the 3rdEyegirl official tosh when there's this he could be selling. I'd rather listen to this than any of the shite on there. Peanut butter logic. Pinstriped clouds and dodgy helicopter droppins.

Eye are piss takers. Thankfully decent tapers got in there and did a good job. Long as it gets spread far and wide Eye'll get one in the eye.

I can't agree with you there. Until the last 3, I was really digging the 3rdeyegirl releases. But then, I didn't like LOL so I didn't buy it, I didn't buy the Bambi video since seeing the free promo was enough for me on that one, and I wouldn't buy the LOL video because I don't like the song, and this week, no release.

Up till then though I was digging it all, so, no, I don't think an audience recording, even this one, is better than those releases.

I would like to see the Dakota V show soundboard released though. CD, vinyl, WAV, MP3, whatever, I'll buy it.

The best thing about Check The Record is the bass solo. After that, the guitar solo. The rest sounds like a clunkfest forced into a song. Love Endorphinmachine tho. So wonderul and raw.

I was thinking about Check The Record. it sounds like a complete clusterfuck in this show.

was thinking that it might help to hear a studio version to sort out what it's supposed to sound like.
