We all do...jermey funkenheimer does it...damn near all of Princes associates do it and have done it...hell, Prince even released some booted tracks as part of the npgmc in 2001-2002 lol

let me say it once and for all..bootlegs are sexy..bootlegs are happenin..bootlegs are comfort food..bootlegs kept me a fan...bootlegs are provacative and they get the people going...bootlegs are here to stay....bootlegs are greater than your mom and dad...thank god, amen, priase allah, asama alaken, etc etc etc

bow

I enjoy Prince's music BECAUSE of bootlegs, not in spite of them. His output is more enjoyable to me because I've seen a bit "behind the curtain," and like it or not, Prince has bootlegs to thank for me buying every piece of music he's released in his life. Bootlegs are as much of Prince's brand as are the name Prince, prince , The Revolution, his custom guitars, etc. He's lucky they're around and that he has a following that pines for them. Nearly every other artist in the world would pay a lot for that kind of support and following.

In Renato's defense, I'm sure what he meant is buy official releases, don't steal music that's seen proper release and which nets royalties for artists, which I completely agree with.

Doozer gets it.

And to add on..those who get bootlegs buy his offical releases as well. He is NOT losing any funds with bootleg releases.

Now UI understand him not wanting his shit released by a bunch of euro's THEM to profit off of...I get that..and I do get that some things he wants to keep as a mystery, some things he wants youu to experience in person only etc etc....

but if part of your mystique is a large storage of vault material AND you as an artists also play up to that mystique....well then you cant expect folks to not give a dmang about them.

Shit..I think he enjoys the bootleg controversy but will never admit to it..well he would admit to it..get Oprah to interview him...she'll get it out of him.

I used to believe that--but I'm starting to doubt it. Oh, they'll buy official releases if the official releases are released in a way that fits whatever set of requirements regarding how they're released that they set up in the format they want unless they are released that way in which case they change the requirements and if that doesn't work, well--they'll come up with some other reason not to buy them. I'm starting to suspect that it's not just streams that people wait for to show up on boots--a practice I kind of understood--but official downloads as well.

I'll buy them... but I'm getting less and less sure of anyone else doing so. A lot of people seem to have very limited request lists--and if Prince doesn't release exactly what they want, they're not buying what he does release.

I'm not going to avoid unofficial material--if something leaks, I'm not going to go "I'll wait until he opens the vaults." If Prince wanted us to have "Moonbeam Levels" (assuming he actually has anything better than what we have, anyway), he could do it tomorrow. I'll complain if he says "Hey, I'm gonna give you all the Time tracks with me on vocals, coming in April" and he doesn't follow through. But just because I think I want the Flesh album more than I want "L.O.L.", I shouldn't refuse to give what's actually available a chance, and pay the man who's providing the product. I'd prefer my wish list and Prince's list--but it's not my choice. I'm just waiting to see what's next.

Do you think he'll ever allow her to leave that subject in the interview as it will be aired?

He'll only explain his 'official' view.

Same as before. TheEye Records people are watching all the torrent sites praying a free quality recording pops up that they can use because the i-phone recording they made is horrible. They have artwork ready to go for CD covers but they know people will complain loudly if they hear their crappy recording. These guys are complete frauds.

Funny how you've gone from claiming it was a friend who heard these recordings to being so sure that they're awful, and that you continue to ignore comments from those who have heard clips. These aren't soundboard recordings by any means, but they aren't "horrible", either. Does someone at Eye owe you money or something?

I can see that they are disrespectful to the people who make the effort to capturing the music.

But I can not see the difference between the 'tapers' and the 'sellers' in regard to the musician. In the end both are disrespectful to the musicians as those or at least on of them expressed his opinion that he don't want recordings..
There is not really a robin hood here. Everybody gets something out of it in the end. Compliments, status, praise or money.

Its nitpicking on your point, because I, for one, am glad that I can enjoy these recordings and for me its a benefit they are free.

So, that means Robin Hood is not really a robin hood... surely he got compliments & praise from those he helped when he gave them the stolen money, and, in his chosen profession at least, he certainly had status.

Of course--but I've never seen him play, and the fact is that I probably won't. He comes nowhere near me (hasn't since 1998--and I couldn't go then), and while I can pop for a download, I can't close my business and go to where he does play and pay for hotels and everything else that would be required. So, good for those who have the memories, but since he has recorded the shows, I'd like to be able to buy them from him for a reasonable price. While I've got a lot of shows (I'm not sure how many, but more than I'll probably ever listen to), I'd still like a few more that actually sound GOOD. I'd rather have studio material, but it still seems to me that live would be easy for him to release, and good for building good feelings among fans.

[Edited 2/17/13 20:36pm]

Really where are you from? i got to see Prince 2 times.

Just noticed this post--I'm in Bentonville, Arkansas. Before the late 90's I just didn't have the money to go anywhere for a show. He did Little Rock, Arkansas and Kansas City, Missouri on the Jam of the Year tour, but it wasn't in the cards then. Big family thing with my wife's folks. Looks like he actually has done both locations since then, even though I didn't remember it: North Little Rock (instead of Little Rock) and Kansas City in one of the Hit + Run Tours, and Kansas City for One Nite Alone and Musicology--often fairly short notice, which isn't something my job really works well for. We'll see what happens this year. Money's really tight at the moment, but if he does Kansas City on a day that we can work it with our job--my wife and I could stay with her folks (who live only about half an hour out of Kansas City). A two day trip, but it might be do-able. Little Rock, though closer, would be less convenient.

We'll see.

Hearing the sample of She's Always In My Hair that's floating about, the sound quality is in my not-so-humble opinion, shit. Anyone who pays for this release has too much disposable income.

I'll still look for, find, and download a free copy of it for the collection, though... Something to check out till/when/if Prince decides to sell me quality copies of some of the material.

Thanx was wondering bout that. The quality of the recordings (only listened to the 1st show from Friday ) is pretty average. Wondering why so many people on that site were saying it sounded great. Professional hypers? Still glad it's out there nonetheless

Is the track list accurate in terms of who plays what? Prince is credited with a keyboard solo on Stratus (second show, first night), but I would have guessed it was Cassandra.

Disc One : Jazz set - January 16th, 2013 10:56 pm - 0:08 am

1. Ronald Bruner Jr. drum solo #1 (0:44)
2. Second Line [U.S. Traditional] (instrumental) (3:41)
3. Xpectation (14:44)
4. Muse 2 The Pharaoh (instrumental) (6:32)
5. Stratus [Billy Cobham] (4:54)
incl. 6. Prince keyboards solo (2:11)
incl. 7. Marcus Anderson sax solo (3:17)
incl. 8. Andrew Gouché bass solo (2:00)
incl. 9. Ronald Bruner Jr. drum solo #2 (3:48)
10. When You Were Mine (intro) (0:26)
11. Instrumental jam (10:43)
12. We're A Winner [Curtis Mayfield] (instrumental) (1:28)
13. I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) [Aretha Franklin] (instrumental) (1:13)
14. Satisfied (instrumental) (2:27)
15. I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothing (Open Up The Door, I'll Get It Myself) [James Brown] (instrumental) (7:12)
16. People Pleaser (instrumental remix) (incl. Adrian Crutchfield saxophone solo) (5:40)

The wooh is on the one!

Sound quality varies from disk to disk. CD2 from the Early Shows sounds better than CD3 imo. Overall it's pretty good for an audience recording.

If you're expecting soundboard quality I don't know what to tell ya. This Elliot joker obviously has a grudge with Eye Records. He's gone outta his way to badmouth this release without hearing it. hrmph Compared to some of the other stuff out there this is one of the better audience recordings.

It's out there for free and there's some good stuff on there. Diggin Housequake, Check the Record, Dreamer, and Chapter & Verse right now. dancing jig

Really like the 3121(the song) feel of Chapter & Verse. I wish the official soundboard version didn't fade at the guitar solo like it does. disbelief

They're all enjoyable shows. I wish I could have been there.
