Some people on here don't understand the funk. Remember that James Brown, Parliament and Sly & The family Stone are among his absolute favourites, and they could all repeat a groove for "fifty years" if they wanted to. Funk is all about the groove and locking you in. It's a different language than pop. But it can be combined of course. Prince is not just about writing pop songs like Rasperry Beret, Starfish & Coffee, I could never thake the place of your man etc etc... he is alot more than that. If he wants to take it down with som laid back groovy funk, he'll do that. I respect him for doing that even though he wont satisfy everyone. Atleast most people on a club sized venue can appreciate long jams more than huge stadiums.

Well stated, but I think you could get in trouble for talking common sense on here. Glad you expressed that perfectly. I think too often, many fans who can't/don't relate to other forms of music a musician chooses to play or embrace, find it easier to trash or call it crap, etc., when they don't understand it, not a regular listener of it or just don’t like a particular music style.

Take for example, I’ve noticed, when Prince gravitates towards 'funk/soul/r&b' music, some fans can't seem to separate Prince from the ‘pop-rock’ Prince, because they see him more of a ‘pop-rock’ musician, and I think that ‘pop-rock’ labeling is based mostly from his Purple Rain era-- which many fans still pigeon-hole him into. Seems that could be just one of the reasons why some fans, (not all of course), are either more critical of him or can’t relate, when he performs ‘funk/r&b/soul/blues’.

Also, I find that some fans, unfortunately, see that type of music, as a lower form, not on the same level they would embrace ‘pop or rock’. This is the thing though, if some fans did their homework, they would know that ‘rock’ was born out of ‘r&b/blues/soul music, so why wouldn’t Prince embrace ‘r&b/blues/funk/soul’, as part of his music history, especially with the many influences of musicians/artists before him, that performed that type of music, that he often pays homage to? I think the best lesson any fan can learn from musicians/artists, even if you don’t like a particular form of music they play, is not to put limitations on their music interests/styles, music knowledge or capabilities.

The grove is there, no doubt.

The lyrics are Prince's own world, no doubt.

If any of you think this is an actual song, your wrong.

I'll be honest, i listened to the first thirty seconds, then skipped to about two minutes in, then skipped to the end to hear the beginnings of a guitar solo to the fade.

I'm guessing there was no bridge.

Oh well.

As a longtime (1982) fan, I have to take major issue with your thesis. There is no way I could have remained as huge a fan as I am if I didn't love all of Prince's styles...his eclectism is a large part of what made me such a big fan. Prince turned me on to jazz and funk and old school R&B and I credit him for that and him alone.

This is an overblown response to some of us not caring for what we simply feel is a weak jam that goes nowhere. I love Prince's funk. I've heard some scorching live versions of Controversy over the past few years...this is not that. Controversy builds and builds to riotous heights in some of these cases.

This sure doesn't.

One of my favorite sequences from his W2A NYC shows was If I was Your Girlfriend into Insatiable into Scandelous into Adore. Not a rock tune in the bunch, but you know what they all have in common? Melodies, up front and center.

This sure doesn't.

Don't pidgeonhole those of us who call out his lame work for what it is, lame.

If you think this is one of his Grade A funk jams, fine, we all have different tastes when it comes to music, and Prince is perhaps the only artist with something to appeal to everyone's taste.

But for me, someone who has grooved to plenty of Prince's funk over the past 30 years, this is Grade D on a charitable day, because I've heard infinitely better from the man, and expect to again.

Gotta agree. People are basically saying "y'all don't understand tha funk" if you don't like this monotone groove. It might have been fine in person - cause all KINDS of stuff can sound good when you are watching it be created - but this doesn't hold up without visuals or the experience of being live. It's one musical phrase over and over, and Prince is not George Clinton in his heyday when he could speak from the stage and make himself heard cause you WANTED to hear. Now that guitar solo COULD be great. But Prince is a tease and won't post that part. lol

I don't believe Prince is done though, he has too much talent and I believe he can still deliver interesting music.

I listened to this four times and I love it. its puts me in a good mood. Is it a masterpiece of complicated arrangements? Um no. Its just a funky groove. Obviously you guys have not been to too many live jam sessions, where the leader just runs a groove for a long time, plays around with band members and start vibing and telling stories. It's not big deal. If you consider that weak that's fine, but you guys keep expecting Prince to do masterpieces every single time and keep bringing up songs from that past, trying really hard to box him in those great songs from the 80's. Oh well, too bad for you. lol

Thank you, this is exactly how I feel!

Hey, thats fine, you're both entitled to your opinions, and I have no issue with that. Different strokes for different folks, right? But it still doesn[t discount what I stated in my post about how many of his fans, not all, prefer/embrace the 'pop-rock' sounds of Prince moreso, than when he gets into his funk/r&b/soul/blues-type sounds. However, the latter had a major influence on much of his performance and music styles, throughout his music career, and that's based on the many musicians/artists from that music genre, that has been a major influence to his music career, which has always been visible in much of his choreography on stage. Although he has presented it in a way he can call his own.

There is no way, when Prince gets into his r&b/funk/soul/blues/gospel sound, that you can't hear the sounds of James Brown including the choreography/dance gestures/moves;when he takes his band members into a JB/Maceo funk/soul groove; his falsetto/slow jams of the mid 60s to mid 70s soul ballad/romanc groups (i.e. Delfonics/Stylistics/Black Ivory/Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, etc.), and then there's Gil Scott Heron/Curtis Mayfield/Temptations' and their messages of societal ills/social injustices, etc. just to name a few. It's all there in Prince's music and performance style, wrapped up and adopted into his own.

Thing is, from reading and observing the opinions of many fans, over the years on various sites, some of his fans (not all), seem to project more value, respect and acceptance, and less, harsh criticism towards the rock-pop side of Prince, moreso than when he gravitates to his r&b/soul/funk/hip-hop/rap sounds, where those are often given harsher criticism, less value and acceptance, by some of his fans. Some who have stated they prefer the 'rock' sound of Prince vs r&b/soul/funk,etc. . By the way, it's ok if you disagree. just stating what many fans have expressed regarding some of Prince's music, but different strokes for different folks, right?
