This is actually a really great thread and a good point of view from Toejam. I actually feel the same way-tired of searching for the "new Prince song." I wish he would just release a single then the album and make it fun again to get the new Prince cd/songs and actually enjoy listening to them again. All this cat and mouse shit has gotten tiresome. I remember back in the 90's when he started this internet thing I just stop listening to him for about 5 years-I'm feeling that way again. He will never be "normal" and that's why we're still his fans, but he needs to realize that his fans are older now, work, have families and lives that don't revolve around looking for the latest Prince "stuff." He needs to keep it interesting and still simple. All these fake accounts and downloading shit one day and the next day it's gone is not helping keep our interest.

I've got a good link for you:

http://tilthedawn.org

This fan site has been up for a while, has most of the features of prince.org as well as some that prince.org doesn't have. It is run by an orger, Claire. It just needs people to go and post there.

Oh joy, yet another lame as hell forum with virtually no members. Because that's what was missing.

Sheesh, the Org has been going downhill for years, and yet people keep setting up forums. If you really want to contribute, publish actual information. Profiles of Prince's protegees, descriptions of studio sessions, etc. Analyze trends in his concert tracklists, tell "the story of a song".Or for the hell of it, write drafts for PrinceVault for the stuff that isn't on there and submit it to them.

But a frikking forum? That's about the last thing we need.

Prince will never know this because he's surrounded himself with yesmen who greet every single one of his stupid ideas as if it is a precious gift. You'd think he'd have learned his lesson from previous dumb crap like the Gameboyz or "Graffiti Bridge" (song, album and movie), but nope.

That's my opinion.

No, that's your projection.

here's my point of view. over the course of the past couple of months prince has once again proven himself to be quirky, fun, spontaneous and above all, creative. he's flashed a few new online personas and has offered us all cool new music and video clips for sale at uber reasonable prices from a shiny new website.

i'm really having fun with the new works. it's perfect for me. i just pop over to the website, see if there's a new tune or clip. if so, download and rock out, if not, maybe tomorrow. and for me, part of the fun is not knowing what's next. i love the unpredictable aspect of what is on offer.

i feel really sorry for those of you who aren't enjoying this particular ride.

Right, he tried to save his ass by releasing two more mp3 albums at the last minute. IIRC he also played some games as far as the download links to the c-note tracks were concerned.

That stuff was cool in the 80s/90s. But nowadays

So, him doing the exact same thing "was cool" before, but isn't now?

This would indicate that it's your level of interest that has changed. That's hardly Prince's fault.

I happen to find the cat-and-mouse enigma game just as intriguing and fun as it always has been with Prince. What Bowie, and everyone else does is boring. Is anyone still talking about that Bowie album?

Prince is smart. He realizes that you have to maintain people's attention by drip feeding over time. In this era, where everyone has much shorter attention spans, it works even better than ever.

The fact that the interest levels for new music are higher than they've been for years tells you all you need to know. The 3rd eye girl viral videos, the mysterious ONENPG thing, the different websites, the Twitter accounts, the weekly Spreecast with Funkenberry and Seth, the Billboard magazine, the Grammy appearance (which had Prince as the top trend on Twitter and one of the most talked about parts of the entire night)........ all this stuff is fucking great and I can legitimately say that I'm excited to wake up every morning, hop on Twitter, and see what's new, because there's a real buzz happening, and the Prince FAN community is more engaged than it has been in years.

Check the Prince tag on Tumblr and Instagram, peep #TEAMPRINCE on Twitter, tune into the Spreecast every week and participate in the chat. You'll soon see there's a huge level of excitement, a noticeable electrical current right now, and what I like the most is that it's largely being propelled by the younger fans, the teens and early-to-mid twenties. And all of that buzz is being fuelled by the social media activities of the bandmembers, 3rdeyegirl, Dr Funkenberry, and more.

It's funny, some people think that Prince doesn't "get" the internet anymore, I would argue that he gets it better than most. You won't see the new Bowie material getting much attention from anyone under the age of 30. And even Trent Reznor, one of my favorite artists of all time and someone who is rightly heralded for using the internet probably better than anyone, even with a new major label deal, How to Destroy Angels is not generating anywhere near the excitement that Prince is right now.

This is what I believe Prince meant when he said in the new article of Billboard magazine (which, by the way, completely sold out online in 3 days) - "I don't talk to old people - they try to find ways to stay static. Young people are the ones with the ideas and constantly moving forward".

Hmmm...I disagree about younger people spreading buzz about his music and even being into it for that matter. My kids (16-20) grew up listening to Prince because of me. Heck, my 20 year old counts 17 Days as one of his favorite songs! I just played Screwdriver for my son (the 20 year old), and he said he doesn't like pop/rock music like that. It's mainly about rap in his group. Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa and the likes. He said he would never play that song, nor would any of his friends. In comparison, I played the original Bambi. His opinion was it sounded better than Screwdriver, but he would still never want to listen to it, nor would his friends. He said that maybe hipster coulds would get into new Prince. Of course, this could be demographics. We're south of Detroit. It's mostly about rap here.

I think the younger Prince fan (teens, early 20s) are few and far between.

^^^ That is interesting! (and I truly hope feedback like that doesn't tempt PRince to rap again eek I hate when he panders. He should just be who he is and not try to cater to the times or to particular demographics)

Anyway, re: the overall message of the thread... I understand that over the years people have outgrown Prince's games. However, this is intrisically who Prince is: he is mysterious, a puzzle and very secretive. I truly don't believe these are just gimmicks for him but an expression of his personality, and I think it's bizarre to expect someone to change their persona because we are growing older. lol

That comment by Prince was short-sighted, ageist and ridiculous. Does this mean he's not talking to Larry Graham anymore (66)? Did he ignore Mavis Staples at the Grammys (73)? YOu can be progressive and forward-thinking/forward-moving at any age. IT's about personality. Just say you talk to forward-moving people. I"m not impressed with "young" people if his idea of young is those babies he invited to the Screwdriver video shooting. hrmph

No, you're taking it the wrong way. My understanding was that he was speaking in regards to the new music industry, and new methods of marketing music. As a professional musician myself, I can say that I agree with him. It is difficult to try and make older people in the music industry understand the new methods of distribution and creating social media buzz for your product. Sadly these people are the ones still in control - management, agents, A&R's, traditional (non digital) PR companies. I have had many ideas vetoed by our management and record labels in the past because they don't understand them. Yet, whenever they have given me free reign for what they believe are crazy ideas, it has led to success.

The most progressive and revolutionary stuff in music right now is coming from people like Odd Future, all in their early 20's. It's their M.O's that Prince is successfully tapping into at the moment.

This is what Prince meant, IMO, and he phrased it in a sly, tongue-in-cheek way. There's no need to be offended by it.

Yeah, young fans here, that's really not much if you consider the amount of people on this site and the actual percentage that are very young. And feeling sorry for my son because he likes popular music? Ok... He had the "musical education" I gave him. Funk, rock, R & B, gospel. He's 20 and has gravited towards rap. I don't thinking having an opinion different from yours or mine should be considered "flawed."

Apparantly the education you gave him didn't stick. Of course it's a flawed opinion if he only gives room to rap music. It's pathetic actually. But hey, that's just my opinion.

It's a fact tho' that Prince still has quite a lot of young fans. Of course it's not the majority. He has fans from almost all age groups and most became a fan 10, 20 or 30 years ago. But he still rakes in the young ones.

rakes in I mean

I'm not sure where you're getting your interpretation. The quote on its face doesn't suggest just talking about marketing music. Do you have a wider context. I can't find the full interview anymore on the Web.

Um, Prince isn't doing anything remotely like Odd Future or any of the other young, innovative groups using social media to distribute music and create buzz. I would say he's doing a number of things to kill buzz and keep himself from goign viral actually, from the multiple sites with the weird names to removing stuff from YouTube to not maintaining a FAcebook/Twitter/interactive site or even uploading casual vids on his own YTchannel, etc. Luckily, he finally got himself on iTunes. But the trend now is to coordinate social media releases with other big PR events and Prince certainly is bungling that and losing the opportunity for momentum with wider audiences beyond his diehards.

If he truly meant what you claim, he's not even following his own advice because he using the Internet like old people in 1999.

LOL! It's an opinion and the 1999 refereence was a play on the song refrain just as the "old" reference was a play on the interview. Can't believe I have to explain this because someone is hyped up on amphetamines and is overzealous. It's called figurative language.

For the record, I don't care what you think based on the way you've addressed other things in this thread, but I will address you just this once.

First of all, criticism doesn't equal dislike. My critique above was because his methods are ineffective for groups beyond the fanbase as I've already stated. Pay attention. Considering my other posts on this very thread have been supportive of Prince, I'm not sure why I even have to explain to you that this isn't a matter of mere dislike. Interacting with you is just so tedious. LIke dealing with a rabid raccoon.

I"m not going back and forth with you like Adria was gracious enough to do. One and done.

Why feel sorry? None of this is life or death...it's just entertainment and different people find different things entertaining.

I'm not about to run hither and yon to multiple sources to view or purchase this content and I don't feel my life is diminished in any way...neither do I feel "sorry" for you if you happen to find it enjoyable.

most of us are adult enough to know what prince is about by now. for the past forty years he has never been predictable, nor has he ever stuck to a traditional format. this is his trademark style.

i find this lack of predictability, and the easter egg hunt element of surprise! go find it, to be amusing and fun. other people seem to find it annoying and rude.

so when i read multiple angry posts from folks who are bitchfesting about what prince is doing these days it simply puzzles me that they are still here, hanging around the ORG all these years, feeling annoyed with prince, and moreover spending time to post their angry objections.

because, most adults who feel angry and annoyed with prince's style by now would have found another artist to follow all these years. yet, there are some who seem to be prisoners of their own obsession to the point where they hate everything prince does, they spend their time and energy complaining about their hate, and further blaming prince for 'making them' go to certain lengths to obtain his music.

all that complaining and griping seems like such a waste of time and energy to me that i cannot help but feel sorry for them. (and to be honest, the negativity and bile in some posts is toxic, not fun to witness imo)

but mostly i feel sorry for them because they missing out on something i consider to be huge big fun.

if they prefer to wait until a new album is released, a new website that meets *their* requirements is created, or until such circumstances exist as to allow their panties to become unbunched, that's fine. but i already downloaded boyfriend and i'm gonna listen to it right now. big grin

fast, fun and dirty, maybe even a little bit dodgy. just the way i like it..... wink

this is only my point of view and you are free to feel sorry for me right back~!

are they masochists? do tbese people also deliberately wear ill-fitting shoes that hurt their feet so they can complain about those too?? what's up with this behavior???? why stick around if they don't like what's going down? why keep on keeping on? it makes no sesne.

i also feel sorry for them because they are in a perpetually angry state over not being able to make prince become what they want him to be. this is just my point of view

There ya go...it's fun to you and that's what matters. Like I said, different people find different things entertaining.

I don't know about "them" or "they", but the guy who started the thread is not a serial basher...far from it, and the handful of people who fit that description thrive off of the attention they always get from offending the sensibilities of others.

I would think that most of us are adult enough to recognize and ignore a troll when we see one and to distinguish between a troll and someone who simply isn't interested in Prince's latest endeavor.

I like what I like whether or not someone else happens to agree. I don't know why I would feel sorry for somebody simply because they don't happen to share my preferences.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.
