I had just moved to Los Angeles in 1981, when a month or two later I learned that Prince would be performing at Flippers. Being new to the city, I didn't know where Santa Monica Blvd. & La Cienega was (...which is where Flippers was located at the time), nor did I know how to get there by public transportation. I had an older brother who had also just moved to the LA area a few years prior, so I asked him how to get there. I explained to my brother how awesome a performer Prince was, that I had just seen him the year before opening for Rick James on his "Fire It Up" tour, and suggested to my brother that he should even come along with me to Flippers to see Prince perform live. I rarely, if ever, asked my brother for anything, and it was apparent that I really wanted to go see Prince again in concert, as I was practically pleading with my brother to come along and show me the way. My brother's response to me? "I'm not taking you to go see that FAGGOT!"

eek

Nearly 20 years later, my brother finally apologized and admitted to me that he had made a mistake. He said that he should have gone with me to see Prince at Flippers, and that if he had; he would have had the opportunity to have seen a legend in the making.

My only response to him was: "...yeah well, I told you". rolleyes

Prince's next LA area concert subsequent to his Flippers appearance was at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1982. I knew my way around town by that time, the album "Controversy" had just dropped about 3 months prior, and there was no way in Hell I was missing THAT Prince concert!

headbang

Great story! But u never explained his per4mance there.

If you're referring to his performance at Flippers, it's because I didn't make it (...despite my best effort to be there). My story of the show at Flippers is about how I didn't know the way there, and why my brother wouldn't take me or show me the way. As it turns out, I was only about 20 minutes away.

Lovesexy Tour--Detroit, Joe Louis Arena, October 30, 1988

The show blew my mind. I was horse for a few days from singing at the top of my lungs. The crowd was in a FRENZY the whole time. The audience participation was the best I've ever seen in any concert ever. When we all sung "party" during 1999 it was REALLY loud. The light show was insanely beautiful, energetic, and frenetic. The whole stage setup was brilliant. An incredible show. It is still my favorite all-time concert and also favorite Prince concert. He seems to hold a special place for Detroit audiences. During the piano part Prince made us laugh with a big build up and then...chopsticks, and a few other beginner piano songs. As if that was all he had. He was playful and on his game at the same time.

I wish I could relive it!

Jam of the Year tour, 1996 or 97. Looking back, that's probably my least favorite tour. Lots of bad dancing, not enough guitar, not enough bass, not enough funk. Then I saw The Rainbow Children, which was a bit better but still weird. And finally Musicology which was very cool.

March 2004 - NYC@Club Black...the night he was inducted into the RRHOF. This concert was the after party. It wasn't even announced on the NPG Fanclub site until the day before. I was an intern in my senior year in college...I remember while I was at work and logged into the NPG site and saw that the tix had just gone on sale. I immediately called my mom at her job and begged her for her credit card number! lol My mom and I were going to leave for NYC the next day for spring vacation anyway, so this was just the topping on the cake.

I remember the concert was supposed to had started at 11pm, I believe, but I don't think P came on stage until after midnight. Hell, all of us there didn't even care, once he got on stage, it was so magical. mushy

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I wanted to go soooooo bad!! bawl

At the time, I was engaged to a controlling pain in the ass who said that anything Prince was a "waste of money".

He didn't say I couldn't go, but had this passive-aggressive way about him that led to the demise of our relationship....

I was at this show. The line for ticketholders went around the corner twice and was super slow. So slow that Prince went on before the people near the end of the line were let inside. This was before the venue was renovated into what is now Terminal 5 so the entrance which let out near the right side of the stage near the front was very narrow and many people just stayed there once they got inside since the view was decent, not letting the people behind them get in which led to a lot of pushing and dangerous overcrowding in that area. I remember it being very scary. And the enocre was dropped from the setlist so not the greatest Prince gig for me.
