Just realised this old post, that can no longer be postet on. "Best vocal performance by prince"

"Crucial" and "Adore" are good bets, but the acoustic demo version of "Thieves in the Temple" peakes everything...

Haven't heard this demo yet. I need to check it out.

So many great performances: The Beautiful Ones, Do Me Baby, Sexuality, even Feel Better Feel Good Feel Wonderful, but the winner for me is ... Adore.

For You, the album. I think it's perfect. He sounds perfect to me.

I wholeheartedly agree. For You was the best ever vocals from Prince.

to my eternal shame i didn't. after that pissy 98 wembley gig and rave i'd all but given up on prince. i didn't buy rainbow children til after the tour, it shocked me how great it was. when i got to hear the ONA boots i was well pissed with myself for missing out. the aladdin dvd doesn't do those shows justice.

Shit. Unlucky.

I was lucky really. I gave up on him for most of the 90s. Didn't even know when or with what he was touring for most of it. I got tickets for Nude when I first got with the missus and he changed the dates so I blew him out after that. Wasn't until someone mentioned he was doing the Apollo with ONA that I bothered looking for tickets. Took the missus to finally see him live for her first time on the last night. Feckin blindin it was too. Shame ya missed em.

I picked up TRC at the gig. Hadn't heard it and played it through the night til the next afternoon.

That little acoustic set from the last night in London. Another 'Best vocal performance' but if we're allowed live bits then I've got a list as long as your arm.

Edit: I like that Aladdin thing. Gotta Broken Heart on that's gorgeous, and that other tune, what was it? ... U Want Me. I want the studio version that's supposed to exist.

my problem with the aladdin dvd is that it wasn't the whole show. individually the songs on it are fine, except "whole lotta love" which is atrocious. it was his most coherent, artistic tour since lovesexy. i would have loved a release like dortmund 88. start to finish, no segues or interjections, the whole trip. i watch dortmund and after a good toke it feels like reliving the lovesexy live experience.

and why not include live performances? they are the truest reflection of his vocal abilities. how does "wasn't my faith" grab u? it grabs me very firmly by the testicles and slightly twists my nipples. what a fucking cool dude he was in the 80s!!!

i went to LOADS of gigs 90-98, they had their moments, but i always had a nagging feeling that i was watching him become cabaret. the 98 gig was appalling, i felt like walking out after 20 mins. i'm just thankful i got to see lovesexy. it was that good that i still carry it round in my head to this day. the pace of it, the weird sounding drums, swirling lights,....u know what i mean!!! wink smile

I do. I do, I do, I do, I do, I do.

Wasn't my Faith/Was it my faith/etc... , even now is still a bit excited to me. It's fucking superb and that's the understatement of the century. It grabs my nipples firmly and twists my, well, yeah... I got the tape in '87 and played it over and over like the nutjob that I am. So, teach me some French... shit, I'd better shut up now. I'm gonna have to put it on now.

Agree with ya on the Aladdin. Same with Lovesexy. We were lucky eh. I can still buzz off it now, all these years later. I know what ya mean. I remember watching Livesexy on the telly, live. When he did that "Roooww Eeee yeahh"... bit on Strange Relationship I went cold. There's a best vocal for ya.

I've always really loved the vocals on "Still Would Stand All Time". There is variety and passion, seems very heartfelt to me.

'When We're Dancing Close And Slow' is an amazingly intimate performance.

It's like he's breathing into your ear.

For me, his 1989 demo of his song I Hear Your Voice, which was recorded by Patti Labelle is something special. Real deep and soulful vocals there cool .

His deep delivery contrasts amusingly with the lyrics about him wearing a dress eek -

As follows -

I even bought a new dress, uh, but when I put it on
I could still, huh, still feel your touch

Of course, this being the 'old' Prince, he could just as likely be singing from a woman's viewpoint or singing from his own personal viewpoint wink

I'd say Come is Prince's best vocal performance by a mile. Then adore or the beautiful ones. I hate U is another good option. I personally love the way Prince's voice sounds in strollin and wish he sang more songs with that tone.
