PrintableI enjoy this record.... The Sign O' The Times thru The Gold Experience era is the Prince stuff that I enjoy and conncet with the most, and I'd consider D&P a standout from that era.
I don't consider it as commercial as most people. It does have a BIG, glossy production...but, some of the songs are a little complex and take different musical twists and turns (Thunder, the title track..etc). The music is very catchy to my ears with enough clever musical nuggets thrown in to make it interesting.
As far as Tony goes... I was never that big of a Rap fan to begin with... But, I remember how HUGE MC Hammer was during this time period, so Tony being there makes sense. Tony's look and husky Rap voice always reminded me of Hammer. I don't mind him that much.

I think it's a good album overall.It's not grounbdreaking or anything,but it's fun.
For me,the highlights are: Cream,Gett Off,Strollin,Live 4 Love,and Insatiable
the title track is a little too syrupy and overblown,and "Jughead" is pure filler.
but the good outweighs the bad.And yes,he clearly wanted a few hit singles with this album,and nothing wrong with that.After the disastrous Graffiti Bridge,he needed to show that he was still in the game.

I found Thunder and Daddy Pop to be silly and embarrasingly weak. Live 4 Love was cumbersome, hardly worth slogging through to get to the guitar solo. I never cared much for Insatiable, thought it was one of his weaker ballads. Cream is ok fun, but I'm hardly the first to point out it's a rewrite of Bang A Gong. Diamonds and Pearls is passable cheese. Walk Don't Walk less so. The less said about the superflous addition of Tony M the better, but as others have noted, Jughead was easily a song ripe for the very back of the vault where only spiders ever visit and there's a constant drip.
There are moments as always. Willing and Able is great, Money Don't Matter Tonight...but I much preferred the symbol album a year later, a hell of a lot funkier and more interesting with better songs, IMO.

D&P & Insatiable: those are 2 of the best Prince ballads.
Like: I Hate U, Scandalous, W2RIL, etc etc...

Due to this era being the period I really began to delve into the Prince world, it will always have a sentimetal place with me in the catalogue. As Larry David put it..."Having said that"...Some tracks as previously identified are now bordering on pure embarassment. The 10 track cull looks impressive and had Prince ignored his whole push to be ghetto popular I believe the album would still hold up today as one of his all time best. The non Tony M tracks still sound nice with good production quality that I can easily listen to today. In many ways the 10 track version proposed here represents some very cohesive and as one reporter at the time said "sane" music that I think Prince could focus a little more on. I feel he sometimes trades quality for ecentrcity. |
