I was shocked when he got married... I thought Prince would be a bachelor forever.

I was shocked at the name change... then the Muppet show.

Shocked at the death of his son.

Then the afro on the Muscicoly video/album cover.

Prince growing old and letting his "old man" show.... that to me was expected for Prince to get serious about his spiritual life and become a grumpy old religious man.

Now.... I am waiting for him to let his gray hair grow out and put the eyeliner down.

Maybe add in the fact that he would appear to give not a damn for his legacy by releasing remastered albums and that he would let the standards of his recorded output slip so far downhill.

That was when I stopped being a 'fan' fan, and just ended up appreciating the music--whatever there was to appreciate.

For me, these things for some reason I was just too naive to contemplate:

1. Threatening his own fans

2. Not releasing at least one album with maxi-singles EVERY year. I always thought that was part of his being "Prince"...yearly albums.

3. Putting covers in his albums---I mean, Emancipation had 4, right? I just couldn't believe he put covers in his albums. For a b-side, that's great. But part of the "Princeness" of being a fan was the fact that he wrote so much material, that he never needed anyone else's material.

4. That he would remain closeted for as long as he had. I thought that with the alternative music revolution of the early 90s that he would be one of the first to venture out and proclaim it--but instead, Rickey Martin, George Michael, and Judas Priest beat him to the punch.

5. He would be come so unfamiliar to so many. This all ties in to the releasing at least 1 album a year business, but nobody seems to know who this guy is anymore. I run a pub quiz and try to ask at least 1 Prince releated questions during our music segmant every 6 weeks or so---some of them quite easy or obvious. But, 90% of people when they hear tracks like Raspberry Berret, I would Die 4 U, U got the Look, have no idea who sang those songs, and even worse, when Prince's name is said, they only vaguely if at all know who he is. (and these are 30 to 40 year old Americans, British, and Australian folks---they should know).

6. He would be 50+ and acting a bit like a celebate Hugh Heffner (who grosses me the fuck out), rather than married quietly to some nice bloke and working away---this isn't something I wish for him, but merely something I just envisioned him doing.

7. Some of the album covers he released. I knew I should have been concerned when I saw Graffiti Bridge and it's strange album cover, but Musicology, Planet Earth, and so many recent ones have really made Graffiti Bridge look actually artistic.

8. Not cursing. Prince cursing has never been essential to my enjoyment of his music. Indeed, it's distracting and silly on The Gold Experience album. But, to remove it completely and make statements about it is equally silly to me. Say what comes to mind, and express that. When he says, "She pure, every ounce, I was sure when her thangs bounced," a certain level of comedy is reached....Bitch, we know what you're talking about! Just say tits!

9. He would ever call TLC one of his favorite bands.

10. He would self-sabatge himself at every turn. I just pictured him grinding away madly at his music, and letting the industry take care of whether it cared or not. At this point, being ground-breaking no longer works, because it's all been done. Even this shitty supposed dubstep acts like Skrillez are just rehashes of stuff that's been done before. But, what is important is standing out through your music, and for some reason Prince's music just doesn't catch the ear anymore. I'm not sure why because some fo the new stuff is good.
