Madman are very good and do alot of manga remasters to DVD and now Blu Ray. I think they would have done a great job on this one. (just a guess).

They must have sourced a print and scanned it and re done the audio. I preordered it already.

Its on legit Aussie retailer websites as a preorder.

My guess is its going to rock.

IIRC "Via Vision" handles all "Alliance Atlantis" releases in Australia...

("CB Films", "Cineplex Odeon" and "MCA" were the original distributors of the film...
"Galaxy Entertainment Inc." merged with "Alliance Atlantis Communications" and in 2003 merged with "Cineplex Odeon Corp" (which I posted here on the .org regarding the rights of the SOTT movie in 2003...)

Neversin.

Prince would have to okay this, right??

The picture is slightly better though but even a bluray player will upscale normal dvds so I don't see much of a difference between the anniversary dvd and the bluray.

I buy a lot of blurays but only of new films.

The older films were never filmed in HD so the transfer is never that great.

Psycho is an exception though...it loooks beautiful on bluray.

The Purple Rain blu-ray looks better than the DVD (you can see more detail, more color, more film stock grain, more how it looked in the theater), and most films since the 1920's were filmed in higher than HD quality on 35mm film. That's why a movie on blu-ray like "Casablanca" looks so good. HD was simply a way for more digitally economical and easy-consumer-viewing that approaches the level of quality of 35mm film.

HD video is simply the highest consumer format at 1920 x 1080 max. That's why they scan an old movie at higher than consumer HD resolutions for archival purposes.

Newer movies sometimes suffer from a horrible transfer like "Predator". I just watched "African Queen" (1951) on blu-ray, and it looks incredible.

I do agree that upscaling on players of DVD's can look quite good, but it's no match for a real blu-ray of the same material. And that goes for a movie as old as "Gone With The Wind".

Thanks for clearing that up

I just went back and compared Computer Blue on both formats and I still can't see much difference between the 2 boxed

Do you have a full HD 1080p TV? Also if the sharpness is turned up on the tv, it might artificially make both picture formats look similar by exaggerating edges. But like you said, the upscaling is very good on most players.

Watching it through a PS3 onto a 42" Panasonic Viera Plasma 3D TV.

I do have the picture set to Dynamic though..it has a THX setting so i'll give it a bash on that.

After reading the review on Bluray.com, I wasn't going to buy PR on Blu, but then, Best Buy had it for $7.99, so, why not.

In the end, it looks a little better than the DVD and sounds a bit better too. It could be better but it is an improvement.

That's a great tv! THX is the best but only if you watch in the dark. It's dimmer to be more accurate.

I hate the artificial settings modern tvs's have. Last thing I want is the shit picture they show in the store. Too bright, too sharp, too nasty. Turn them off and set it up properly!

Yikes - I hadn't noticed that.

My copy arrived this morning and I've had a (very quick) look at it.

It definitely sounds better on my set-up and seems to look better too.

That image error is on the cover, but not the disc itself:

It certainly seems legit (the disc looks identical to the DVD except it says "High Definition Digitally Remastered Picture & 5.1 TrueHD Sound" rather than simply "Digitally Remastered"), although that image error on the cover is pretty ordinary for an official release.

Would be interested to hear what others think.

Based on the pic above, it's multi-region, so it can be played in any country.

Kindly clarify. I'm not home to enhance the picture. Does that little white triangle with "A, B, C" means it's multi-region?

Exactly. I've bought Blu-Rays from the UK , and if they have that symbol, they'll play on any Blu-Ray player in the U.S.

lol

I'm highly ignorant about formats, but I thought that blu-ray was supposed to fix the regional issues with DVD by being an 'International' standard. confuse

Blue Ray Region Code Info.

Please look away now if easily bored - might be of use to some people

As with the implementation of region codes for DVDs, Blu-ray Disc players sold in a specific geographical region are designed to play only discs authorized by the content provider for that region. This is intended to permit content providers (motion picture studios, etc.) the ability to support product differences in content, price, release date, etc., by region. According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, "all Blu-ray Disc players...(and) Blu-ray Disc-equipped computer systems are required to support regional coding." However, "Use of region playback codes is optional for content providers..."[123] Some current estimates suggest 70% of available [movie] Blu-ray Discs from the major studios are region-code-free and can therefore be played on any Blu-ray Disc player, in any region.[124]

Movie studios have different region coding policies. Among major U.S. studios, Paramount Pictures andUniversal Studios have released all of their titles region-free.[125][126] Sony Pictures and Warner Bros.have released most of their titles region-free.[127][128][129] Lionsgate and Walt Disney Pictures have released a mix of region-free and region-coded titles.[130][131] 20th Century Fox and MGM have released most of their titles region-coded.[132][133]

The Blu-ray Disc region coding scheme divides the world into 3 regions, labeled A, B, and C.

Region codeArea
A Includes most North, Central and South American and Southeast Asian countries plus theRepublic of China (Taiwan), Japan, Hong Kong, Macau and Korea.
B Includes most European countries, African and Southwest Asian countries plus Australia andNew Zealand.
C Includes the remaining central and south Asian countries, as well as the People's Republic of China and Russia.

In circumvention of region coding restrictions, stand-alone Blu-ray Disc players are sometimes modified by third parties to allow for playback of Blu-ray Discs (and DVDs) with anyregion code.[134] Instructions ('hacks') describing how to reset the Blu-ray region counter of computer player applications to make them multi-region indefinitely are also regularly posted to video enthusiast websites and forums. Unlike DVD region codes, Blu-ray region codes are verified only by the player software, not by the optical drive's firmware.

You can play any blu ray from any region/country as long as your player is multi-region either through it being modified or simply pressing a code on your remote. There's a certain brand sold at Best Buy that did the latter, but only on their older models.
