Great vocals, great music, a great video, and some nice imagery and poetry in the lyrics make this one a song that I still like and that has stood the test of time but I still find some parts of the lyrics very, very creepy, especially the part about the age difference, this "age ain´t nothing but a number" mentality and the mention of her being "every school boys fantasy".
Then again, maybe I´m just being a bit old fashioned and it´s probably perfectly ok for grown men to lust for underage girls. I know I don´t. Dude was 35 or 34 when he released this song and Mayte was barely legal. But, like I said, the imagery and poetry of the lyrics can´t be denied and I like the song despite the things I dislike about it. The flannel shirt was totally unnecessary and another sign of Prince trying to catch up with the younger generation without really getting it at all. Or maybe he was getting it...but it´s still a stupid idea.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

One of my fave tracks from the album indeed. Not sure if he wsa trying to make Purple Rain II or a Purple Rain for the album, but I can see where the Purple Rain ideology may come from...
The one main hangup I have about this, especially as it did get a single release was the video... Tony M. on Guitar?!

His relationship with (most probably, since she was influencing majority of his work at the time) Mayte, his disdain towards the media about the speculation towards it .. I think I've got a fair idea, it's not like the lyrics are subtle in any shape or form

A comical foray into reggae (ha!), but this is actually one of my most played tracks from the album!

Never liked this song, always thought that it was a very Prince-by-numbers song. I'm surprised at the amount of love shown for it - very 'Meh' for me. Love 2 the 9s - much better - certainly a stab at something more original. When my brother and I are having an heated exchange about our tastes in music (he got off the Prince train at the Lovesexy platform), he always wheels out the phrase "What about 'The Morning Papers', what the f**k is that about?!!" cos he knows it shuts me up. He's got a point! [Edited 4/11/12 1:52am]

Marte Wulff. What do people think of her take on this song? It's on the Shockadelica album that never saw the light. Except it did.
It starts with the guitar part not quite sympathetic to the vocal but that doesn't last too long. Also they should have cut the soloing from this song. It's cringable and takes what should be a nice folk rendition into something a little amateur. Shame really.
