I like them both, i treat them as completely different songs (which they are but the title), i'm not going to compare them as they are totally different.

cool

I Wonder if he'll remake Moonbeam Levels with a Future Soul Song feel, that might be quite good.

I agree. I like it but not as Extralovable. He should have used the songs as inspiration and just created new lyrics. There is no POP to the changed lyrics, sounds like some who got tired.

LEAVE Moonbeam Levels alone

"better" is too subjective a word to be meaningful. Better how? He was perhaps a more conceptually creative, original and cutting edge songwriter in 1982, but he wasnt a better musician, he wasn't a better bandleader, he wasnt more creative on the business end of things. I think his singing got better (more refined) around 85-after.

Change it one more time..

There, I've said it: the new version of Extraloveable is better than the old bootleg demo! It is just right up my alley, it's catchy, funky pop. And although I like the old demo, I like this new version better. Out goes the rockguitar, in come the synth stabs! cool I hope this song will be a success for Prince, I wouldn't mind an album full of tracks like this!

And this is something you couldn't have posted on any of the other threads?

'Extraloveable 2011' is... boooring crap!

I'm afraid Prince has lost his funkiness, the song doesn't move me at all.

Listend 10 times the day it was available, and I'll never listening to it again......... seriously a bad version.

the original is fantastic.

I agree it's a tough call. There are certain elements I prefer in both versions.

Right. And there's some elements I could've done without in both:

Original: that rape lyric

Remake: the rap

Other than that, it's night and day with both...

The original verison reminds me of Prince in his element at the pinnacle of his success. That sound he had in the early to mid 80's. The new version is "alright" but it aint real funky cause it got that original pop. lol

RRA

Considering the many previous rap tracks Mr. P has given the world over the years, I have no qualms what so ever with the rap section in EL2011 because it's not stupid, its not tacky, its not a lame attempt by a guy on the career downslide trying to stay "hip" or whatever.

Well to be fair, that one lyric came THIS CLOSE to derailing that song. But, crap happens. It's a good enough track.

Prince then vs. now: The Eternal Fan debate

Here's why it is stupid--

In 1982/1983 you know what many hardcore/oldschool Prince fans were saying?

Fuck Prince for going white/pop with "Little Red Corvette".

In 1984 Prince became a superstar with Purple Rain. You know what many hardcore/oldschool Prince fans were saying?

Fuck Prince for forgetting his R&B roots and doing an MTV/crossover/rock album. They missed his intimate "funky members only" type of fan situation, and resented him for appealing to the blond, teenage, masses.

In 1985 many hardcore/oldschool Prince fans lost their mind with Around the World in a Day. Some have never recovered fully (what's up vainandy?).

Thus, it was eternally cast in stone that Prince fans would continue to pointlessly debate when Prince was better, had lost it, was more original, etc.

Personally, I cannot believe that anyone is holding up Prince in the early 90's as some kind of "glory days" or gold standard. As I said before, shit like "Jughead" (most Tony M related things) was the absolute worst. The bottom.

"Extralovable" is a classic anyway you slice it. New version or the original. Each has merit. Both are fucking miles away from Prince's worst. Both are fucking sick.

I'm actually one of the people who love his recent work more than his 80's stuff but not this one. The original one sounds more exciting and it has that unique originality of Prince.

personally I like the original more....he just seems to be flowing with funkiness...the new version just isn't funky to me..if anything its contrived....compared to the original its a little boring IMHO...

and whomever said he's a better musician now...well, technically that may be true - but it was the rawness and 'attitude' that is the real difference between the young Prince and the 'older' Prince....

time may be a trick but it doesn't hide the inevitable he just isn't as creative as he used to be....in some cases I think he's a little too clever and the end result just isn't as good IMHO

'Large Room' is a good example - there's just no 'mood' on the 2009 version compared the the original.....its like black and white...technically the new version is great...but without the mood of the original, it's 'just another song'... mood and attitude are more important to me , but hey, that's just me smile
