I enjoyed it, was good to see some new interviews, As the first half of the doc was discussing his multi instrumentalism they could have done with some more live footage or thrown in a really great guitar solo or something.

Just watched Purple Rain for the first time in like 15 years, ouch lol date-eeed. ........and also noticed the stunt guy riding the Prince bike in the wet looks like some old guy. biggrin

Overall a good evening of Prince footage. cool

I think it was only Alan Leeds that touched on the fact that he hasn't had a contemporary hit in years...sorry but younger fans are going to wonder why someone Madonna's age, with 5 number 1 hit singles in the US just seemingly stopped having hits in in thirties. To me it's inexcusable, to other fans it doesn't matter, it isn't about 'that' but Prince to me was the absolute apex of what popular music, to me, could be, in every sense of the word. Unfortunately his shocking business decisions will form part of his legacy, because his legacy cannot simply stop after 1995.

The doc and showing of Purple Rain has got 'Prince' and 'Purple Rain' trending in the uk on twitter. Beverly Knight is tweeting a lot about Prince at the mo. Even wendy and lisa are talking about him. Someone asked if Roadhouse Garden was cancelled because they weren't happy with the terms. They replied that this was false. Interesting.

Some juicey stuff coming out!

Oh for crying out loud. THis is all old news. Hint: there's a website called PrinceVault, go read up on the subjects you don't know about before claiming we're learning something.

That footage the BBC got from Prince back in the day because they'd traveled to PP for an interview and he'd changed his mind. So instead they got that footage form the vault.

It was true about Prince doing more albums than they could release....remember Come, TGE, Chaos and Emancipation...? That's the whole reason Gold experience was barred from release for 1 whole year....(quite why they got him to release Come instead of Gold experience (Gold was pretty much done by that time) is a mystery to me)

That whole thing is well-documented, and nothing like you said here. All WB demanded was that Prince woudl *do some effort* for the money they were supposed to be paying him. That was part of the $100 million deal: that he would start *promoting* his own records.

Prince bitched about WB being slow to release stuff -- and what happened then? He signed with Arista and sat on Rave for six months.

And where are all those records Prince was going to release once he was free?

I'm pretty sure they'd have to re-get permission for the concert footage after all those years elapsing...

Depends on the contracts they signed back then. Considering the Omnibus documentary has been on TV repeatedly in recent years, chances are Prince simply signed some bad agreement back then.

still its quite refreshing, it kind of implies Prince is giving out old footage without censoring and co-operating with the docu in that way.....

I doubt that.

As much as you like Alan Leeds, you have to consider that Prince was also highlighting the raw deal musicians get with record companies.

The same deal he was giving his proteges. Plus: there are lenty of smart musicians who were getting excellent deals long before Prince. But they weren't greedy and didn't sign $100 million record contracts against the advice of friends and employees.

Addmitedly he was biting the hand that feeds him, but his actions did highlight the unfairness of the industry....where an artist only gets about 10% of the actual earnings, that is surely wrong,

Nobody forced him to sign a bad contract.

Still, you could argue that he should have read the contract and realised this earlier, but you know how these creative types are...! Plus the alleged $100 million contract was certainly a persuader...

Everybody told him to not sign it. But he was greedy.

Alan Leeds is 100% correct: no artist has ever gotten this much freedom from his record company.

Hey Bart, who were the people that advised him not to sign the $100million contract? I hadn't heard this before...do you have sources?

He probably also signed it because he was probably heavily in debt, I know things were quite excessive around PP around that time. I think also there was probably a bit of subconscious competetiveness around MJ and Madonna who were also getting big deals around that time.

P.S Are you based in Holland out of interest?

I thought it started out ok, then they just tried to add too much in the space of 20 mins to cover his entire career up to date, which is impossible to do in 20 mins, so it became rushed.

Like others have said, to do a proper Prince documentary, you will need atleast 2 and a half hours.

For a younger and a new fan, this would serve the purpose; an overview.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Miss Cassandra Wilson among the interviewees. And I loved Mica's reaction to the mic toss.

Yes, harcore fans should expect very little from the docu, but fitting a 30 year career into an hour was never going to be great.

Good for newer or more casual fans.

There is a small review on Virgin Media Web page at the moment. I love this comment, summed up Prince exactly:

In a world of talentless celebs, it was nice to see someone so lavishly gifted on telly for once.

http://www.virginmedia.co...eviews.php

Who's in it?

Pint-sized, purple-clad pop genius Prince was revealed in a whole new light last night, in a documentary which explored every step of his way to international superstardom.

In a nutshell

The sight of a young Prince suffering huge stage fright was probably the most startling bit of archive footage in this film. It reminded us that even the biggest icons started off as mortals, uncertain, faltering, desperate to please. Seeing Prince clamming up and smiling bashfully during that early TV interview, it would have been impossible for audiences of the day to predict how huge he'd become.

Of course, it helped that he was a bona fide musical prodigy. The documentary featured awe-struck anecdotes from his friends at the time, who couldn't believe this teenage from Minnesota not only sang on his first album but played every single instrument and produced the thing too. The programme also revealed how he blended together punk, funk, pop and rock to create his own genre, and created his uber-sexual persona as a cover for his own intense shyness.

What's the verdict?

Though far too short to cover Prince's career properly, this documentary emphasised the importance of his Minnesota background: the absence of any real hip hop or urban music scene meant Prince took his influence from guitar music rather than the fledgling hip hop scene, making him almost unique among major African-American artists. In a world of talentless celebs, it was nice to see someone so lavishly gifted on telly for once.

Star rating

4/5

My darling in London recorded it, so we can watch it together when I visit him after Christmas. Looking forward to it!

Sweetheart luckily digs Prince, because when overhere in Amsterdam he heard it a lot. Well, at least Prince is in his top three guitar players.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.
