Yeah, I would have liked a show with far more Alan and no Mica's.

It was OK, a lot like the Janet one last week - some good points, lots of missed stuff, but it's difficult to condense Prince's entire career into an hour. They missed tons especially post-Purple Rain (no Parade?! Barely anything after D&P except a few 3121 promo video shots and concert footage). Keep using that TOTP footage too BBC, they're so cheap! Whenever they have a documentary about a popstar, they always use their own footage - trot out that pink wig Madonna Holiday performance why don't you! lol

I was surprised they graced airtime with mention of Vanity 6 and the Time, what other TV documentaries have done that?

Contributors to the doc will also include Chuck D and Beverley Knight. They must have nabbed Chuck D the same time they were making the Public Enemy one lol . Apparently Trevor Nelson will be narrating. Also to confirm purple rain will be shown afterwards.

Chuck D is such a coward. Praising Prince's use of rap -- WTF? Back in the 1980s he was very critical of Prince and said that all he'd done was show the world his ass on a velvet pillow.

OK - could easily have done with 2hrs though, felt a little rushed.

Liked the beginning, but annoying that they kept interrupting the Dick Clark clip with commentary rather than just show the whole thing...also they probably shoiuld have showed the interview where he said nothing...

Some of the chronology of the videos was off - Gold before TMBGIW and Sexuality in background when discussing Dirty Mind.

That annoying woman - Beverley Knight (?) incorrectly calling it 'Anna Stasia' repeatedly!

Could have analysed the shock value of DM especially 'Sister' more - they played it but didn't comment on it which I thought was a bit odd....

Rather one sided with Alan's views on Prince's fight with WB (ie. saying WB were fine) ...but guess he's just giving his opinion...

Needed more about personal life - JW etc... Emancipation era and internet debacle....and also about newspaper distribution would have been better.

Interesting to see Jill Jones being interviewed....

Good to see footage of the Jan 5, 1979 concert...

Interesting that some of the footage was licenced from Paisley Park Enterprises....Dirty Mind concert footage and Camden 88 gig...so have SOME co-operation!

Up to Purple Rain it was okay but it was a bit of a rushed mess after that. The chronolgy of albums, particularly after SOTT, was all over the place.

I'm glad we were given that hour but the guy deserves a 6 part series to do his career real justice.

The documentry was lame, not very indept at all. The Omnibus was better, and I see that they even took a lot of clips and footage off that anyway! Won't be watching that again.

Yeah, I would have liked a show with far more Alan and no Mica's.

And Beverly frikking Knight who has got NOTHING to do with Prince.

That American Bandstand crap from Pepe Willie -- "stage fright".

A complete mash-up of timelines.

Making it out like Prince never does interviews.

Why the insistence on touching most albums? You've got one hour, FOCUS instead of desperately trying to shove everything in.

Twenty years ago they did this legendary Omnibus documentary, and now we get this crap?

I thought it was quite good.

My only gripe was that they seemed to be talking aout one era and were showing photos from another era.

And i hope I never have to witness that Sunday Show interview ever again neutral

I agree far from spectacular:

Nothing new to hear (but we here are all sad enough to know everything already)

Chuck D's rap comments made me snigger

"Anna Stasia"

and agreeably too messy after Purple Rain

Definately needed to be 2+ hours

BUT

IT WAS SOMETHING NEW!!!!

It wasn't a unique one off, so all artists will get the same treatment. Just unfortunate our boy has so much to talk about

Just be glad to see a Documentary which covers post 91, even if it is sloppy

Just you wait guys when am a budding film maker I'll be sure to get out the definitive Prince Documentary (non biassed!..............to a certain degree...)

Oh, and can I point out that the story Alan Light told about Prince bitching about how he was two albums ahead of his record company migth be rather hypocritical considering what has happened next. Like Prince hooking up with Arista and working on Rave for 6 months after shopping it around and then whining when he had to promote it. Like Prince taking the best part of a year to deliver CB, a *compilation album*. Like Prince not bothering to promote the album he'd just released on tour. Like Prince releasing a song only on Canadian iTunes and then claiming that it isn't available elsewhere because the peopel responsible had taken the day off.

Interesting that some of the footage was licenced from Paisley Park Enterprises....Dirty Mind concert footage and Camden 88 gig...so have SOME co-operation!

That footage the BBC got from Prince back in the day because they'd traveled to PP for an interview and he'd changed his mind. So instead they got that footage form the vault.

The doc and showing of Purple Rain has got 'Prince' and 'Purple Rain' trending in the uk on twitter. Beverly Knight is tweeting a lot about Prince at the mo. Even wendy and lisa are talking about him. Someone asked if Roadhouse Garden was cancelled because they weren't happy with the terms. They replied that this was false. Interesting.

That footage the BBC got from Prince back in the day because they'd traveled to PP for an interview and he'd changed his mind. So instead they got that footage form the vault.

It was true about Prince doing more albums than they could release....remember Come, TGE, Chaos and Emancipation...? That's the whole reason Gold experience was barred from release for 1 whole year....(quite why they got him to release Come instead of Gold experience (Gold was pretty much done by that time) is a mystery to me)

I'm pretty sure they'd have to re-get permission for the concert footage after all those years elapsing...still its quite refreshing, it kind of implies Prince is giving out old footage without censoring and co-operating with the docu in that way.....

As much as you like Alan Leeds, you have to consider that Prince was also highlighting the raw deal musicians get with record companies. Addmitedly he was biting the hand that feeds him, but his actions did highlight the unfairness of the industry....where an artist only gets about 10% of the actual earnings, that is surely wrong, unfortunately the tide hasn't yet turned, and I think other artists need to step up and make a stand on that too. Still, you could argue that he should have read the contract and realised this earlier, but you know how these creative types are...! Plus the alleged $100 million contract was certainly a persuader...

I think he did mishandle it and come across as a petulant child at times but I think the point he was making was valid...

What would have gained him more support was if he actually did release the music once he was 'free'...

Btw Bart, how exactly did u watch it live - you aren't in the UK are you? I guess you can pick up the signal over in Holland? wink I hope you are paying your licence fee?!! wink
