Harlepolis

The album brings to mind Jimmy Jam's quote in The Purple Reign radio documentary when he said that Prince used to brag about how he could spit on records and end up as hits, when in reality, they only end up as spit.

And baby, that album is a heap load of morning sick-as-a-dog saliva .

Wasted Kisses was the only thing I saved from that album.

This is not meant to be confrontational to anyone, but what EXACTLY is the problem people have with this album?? SURE, it has a few weak songs, but it's also got mostly great songs:

1. New Power Soul 10/10
2. Mad Sex 10/10
3. Until U're in My Arms Again 9/10
4. When You Love Somebody 8.5/10
5. Shoo-Bed-Ooh 5/10
6. Push It Up! 7/10
7. Freaks on This Side 10/10
8. Come On 10/10
9. The One 5/10
10. I Like Funky Music 4/10

In my estimation, this album is EASILY better than anything that's came after it, and even albums that came before it. It trounces "parade".

What exactly is there NOT to like about this album? This is what I've never understood. These are great songs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Opinion:

1.) More than a few weak songs, 80% of the songs are bland or to be blatant weak!

2.) I would much rather listen to Parade, a much more artistic and trying album

3.) The album just doesnt deliver. What is there to like about the album? @ best its an average P album. Not even among his best work in the 90's, its kinda boring.

4.) I like 3121 more than this, heck I like Lotusflow3r 3-disc better.

5.) The songs are average @ best not great, they were a great reach but he miss the marker by and inch or two. Sorry P sad

Upside: The album is far from his worst. I dig the vibe direction of the music. & It also contains The One, which is one of my favorite P songs. Gotta show some kinda love 4 P heart

^Of course!

The real problem is liking (or having-to-like) ANYTHING a certain musician puts out just because it comes from such certain musician.

And the situation gets really sad when people have-to-like anything a musician puts out but not because he is a great musician but mainly because they find him to be hot. Which actually happens here a lot.

"Parade" was not a big deal as an album when it came out! Songs like "Christopher Tracy's Parade, Life Can Be So Nice, Do U Lie, and even two of the singles: Mountains and AnotherLoverHoleInYoHead caused yawns in pop culture at the time.

But "Girls and Boys", "Kiss".... did cause a great commotion. You know it's potent when people are singing it in the high school halls. Of course if radio hadn't pushed them, it wouldn't have been heard!

Try imagining this outside of the world of Prince fandom. I can see how to a completely new listener, they would not see the great value overall in "Parade" that Prince fans do. And they might find a song like "Mad Sex" more interesting texturely and for sheer catchiness then some of the songs on Parade.

it was a terrible album, and the second of a three punch knockout of bad albums that soured the taste of being a Prince fan back in the late 90's (the first was "Emancipation," the third being "Rave".. three shitty albums in a row)

i'm sure those of us who bought it the day it was released, took it home with a smile, threw it on the cd player & dug through the booklet, smiling.. and as the album played, that smile sort of faded "maybe the next track will be better".. the smile became more forced, until it became a frown.. then, "Come On" started playing, we heard the Camille voice, the smile came back, but, quickly vanished when the lame chorus started.. as the album continued, and that smile turned into disgust.. maybe we were just tired? not in a good mood to listen to a new Prince album? so we gave it another shot the 2nd listen was even worse.. a quick trip to alt.music.prince confirmed that most others were feeling the same way. "maybe it'll grow on me"... then the hideous "Come On" video was released, the awful "Newpowersoul" tour & countless Larry/Chaka tv apperances.. and it was downhill from there

"Newpowersoul" = garbage

[Edited 7/3/11 2:32am]

LMAO!! This post had me crackin' up the whole way through, mainly cuz it's true!! lol

Now, I wasn't that enthusiastic about the project from day one, so I wasn't smiling like in your post. At the time, I was HUGELY disappointed by Emancipation, displeased at what an easy-peasey band he now had, put off by the CB fiasco, and I knew the album was released under the NPG name and not Prince's own (the symbol, I mean), so that was a HUGE clue it wasn't first - possibly even second - rate material right there.

I think "The One" and "Come On" are among the greatest things he's put out.

And "Mad Sex" is a pop gem in a new flavor for him. New mood to the beat, very consice and structured , and ear candy catchiness. The jazzy piano is used consistently and well, unlike his normal tendency in the late 90's and onward to have these jazzy/showbiz flourishes that sound like a hyper talk show band and destroy whatever mood the song had.

^Songs like "Mad Sex" and "Come on" do have a nice groove. But if there's nothing more to it, you could call it ok but not great. Everything else is an insult to creations which have so much more to offer.

I love it. I consider it a good, solid album and I like all the songs to varying degrees--but most of them I like quite a bit. For me, it trounces Emancipation.

Just to stir the pot a little more, it's clearly a Prince/O+> album.

Its a good album. I have always liked it. The ONe is among the most beautiful songs Prince ever made. Come On is among the funkiest songs that Prince has ever made. Those 2 tracks alone make this a solid CD. When U Love Somebody is a perfect Prince pop song that feels like sun shine. Even Shoo Bed Ooh is a little gem. Deep funk tracks like Push It Up, Freaks On This Side, and I Like Funky Music can be lost on those whno have a lightweight post Purple Rain point of reference. If the Ohio PLayers got their origingal members and made an album in the 90s, it would sound alot like this.

1. New Power Soul 10/10 CLASSIC
2. Mad Sex 0/10 Rhythmless, faceless piece of shit
3. Until U're in My Arms Again 2/10 catchy chorus, but Oh Lord, this IS cheesy
4. When You Love Somebody 3/10 Emancipation throwaway, too poppy
5. Shoo-Bed-Ooh 0/10 WTF?? neutral Is this a bad song or what
6. Push It Up! 4/10 Uneven
7. Freaks on This Side 0/10 Prince's nadir
8. Come On 8/10 very good
9. The One 5/10 Overrated, overlong, and it reminds me of Your Song (Elton John)
10. I Like Funky Music 1/10 Uneven

11. Wasted Kisses 9/10 Excellent, pure late-90's sound. CLASSIC

wow, only 3 good tracks...

clearly one of his very worst/disposable albums...
